Why do soldiers tap magazines on their helmet before inserting them?
>>
A thread died for this. It's to knock the ammo back so it feeds properly from the mag. Saged
>>
>>33752248
To seat the rounds against the back of the magazine. It supposedly helps it feed more reliably.
>>
>>33752248
To get the rounds to seat fully back in the magazine to avoid jamming.
>>
It looks cool in da movies!!
>>
>>33752248
insure the rounds are properly aligned in the magazine. sometimes certain mag/ammo combinations leave enough space that its possible for the mag to bind up or for a round to be fed up to the bolt in such a way that it causes a malfunction
>>
>>33752248
prepares the rounds to fire, you wouldn't want the bullets getting scared off by a firing pin out of nowhere so you give 'em a gentle tap to wake up the mag
>>
>>33752259
Is sage even a thing anymore?
>>
>>33752248
They don't, only soldiers in movies and some dumbass draftees in nam did that. Do not not do this, slapping the mag against your hand has the same effect.
>>
>>33752248
Only american soldiers do this.
We used to poke fun at them for it.
>>
>>33752545
I was taught to do this in USMC boot camp, 1996.

all it does is make your post not bump. people seem to treat it like a magic word on 4chan tho
>>
>>33752648
Then you were taught wrong
>>
>>33752248

It magically compacts the powder inside, which increases your fps by 15%.

black and green followers in usgi magazines are notorious for tilting.

smacking the magazine backside on your helmet makes sure everything is seated properly. to lower the chance of magazine tilt related stoppages.

i did it when I was in the army from 03-12. I still do it out of superstition with my tan and orange follower magazines in my civilian AR15.
>>
>>33752648
This is the problem with marine boot camp, the person doing the teaching is still a marine, it's like having a retard teach a special Ed class.
>>
>>33752776
You are dumb, you can just smack it against your hand it will do the same thing without fucking up the magazine
>>
>>33752413
underposted rate
>>
>>33752809
or you could not try to beat the magazine against your head and just tap.

hard surfaces work better for tapping things into place.
>>

>>33752682
It's more symbolic than anything
>>
>>33752809
>fucking up the magazine
Just... how hard do you think people are hitting their own heads, here?

>>33752845
It does the same goddamn thing it has always done.
>>
>>33752809
To be fair, if you have a rifle in your other hand it's a bit hard to do that
>>
>>33752870
Repeated strikes to the mechanical weak point of the device you moron. It was never necessary and never actually fixed the problem it was just something stupid draftees started doing in nam, you know the same ones who thought the m16 was self cleaning. If you tapped the magazine on your hand when you loaded the fucking thing in the first place you don't have to worry about it at all.

You don't smack it on your hand in combat you do it once when you are loading the mag in the first place.
>>
>>33752545
>slap mag against hand
if one happens to go off it could hit you or someone in the path of travel

Smacking it on your helmet at the very least protects yourself
>>
>>33752413
So true ... gotta make sure the little darlings are awake and ready to kill
>>
>>33753021
That is physically impossible som I'm not really worried about that.

>>
>>33752992
Smacking the mag when you're loading it won't do shit. See, after you load the mag, you carry it around, bouncing and jostling it. This can cause the ammunition to shift inside the magazine.
>>
>>33753092
>>33753143
Oh, I guess it doesn't matter, then.

Even if you somehow managed to strike a primer when tapping the mag, the cartridge would go off like a small firecracker. Without the barrel to contain and channel the gasses, there isn't enough pressure to send chunks of metal flying dangerously.
>>
>>33753021

Nice b8 m8
>>
>>33752682
It's polite when you're basically just calling someone a moron in a stupid thread that shouldn't be bumped.

Saying you did it is basically just robbing them of a (you), or letting them know that you don't really mean the (you) that they get.
>>
>>33752920
you realize the mag springs were weak as shit and if the bullet scraped against the front of the mag it would jam, right?

tapping the mag on the helmet is bad practice
metal mags can start to split at the press/weld points (since they are usually given to soldiers made out of aluminum material)
use pmags and slap it against leg or hand.
>>
>>33752545
People do it literally all the time
Especially with blanks.
>>
>>33757892

Blanks are shorter than the shells they replace, so no wonder.
>>
>>33756272
>metal mags can start to split at the press/weld points
[citation needed]

If they can't take a few swift taps, then they are extremely poorly made and probably shouldn't be used in a real firearm anyway.

>>33753038
>physically impossible

To check they have their helmet on
>>
>>33752248
This is an ancient tradition that goes back to antiquity. When facing an opponent one would slap their shield, breastplate, or helmet with their spear or sword in order to "wake up" not only themselves but more importantly their armor and weapon's spirit for the fight. Consequently, you see these soldiers doing the same for their helmet (the only armor in WW2, Korea, Vietnam, etc.) It still lives on today even.
>>
>>33752248
GI mags can be finicky that way.
I guess makes the rounds in line or so people believe.

I know soldiers in WW2 used to seat their en-blocs for the Garand by hitting it against the side of the stock, if not, their helmet. If rounds aren't correctly seated, the clip will not enter the rifle. Only then is it helpful to have something hard to tap it against, lest you like hitting yourself with the business end of your ammo.
