>>

Why does it say the slr104ur krinkov is not recommended for first time buyers?

I already got some SBR stamps and a big budget but don't have any AKs. I have a serious krinkov itch.

Unless you have one of the rifles with the restrictor on the gas port. I'm going to have to press off the FSB/GB to get the plug out when my stamp comes back so it's not undergassed as a SBR. It sucks but such is life
>>
>>33751621
Yeah, I've wondered about that. Can you see the limiter?
>>
>>33751637
Yeah, I have a shitty old picture of it somewhere. Let me grab it out of the safe and take a new one

Man you guys have no idea how hard it was to turn that down even though I don't need another
>>
>>33751563
>>33751621
From an optimist perspective isn't it a win-win gamble? If there's a restrictor, I can safely shoot it until the stamp comes back. And if there's no restrictor, doing the conversion is easier.

This is the best picture I was able to take, which is still terrible. I can see it better in person. I've only put 60 rounds through it and by no means did it feel over gassed. I'll probably just have someone do the work, I have no tools and don't want to screw it up. I am going to do the cut and crown myself though

Take an old towel and lay it over the existing sight leaf. Put the gun on something sturdy, then take a flathead screwdriver and put the head along the line in the middle of the leaf towards the front of the sight block. Hit the screwdriver with a mallet and the existing sight leaf should fly off. You can then either reseat or replace the leaf spring, then press the new sight leaf in with a bit of force.

after some sleuthing i've seen evidence of it done to phase out a model but keep it available to those who have a contract for it

this isn't applicable in my case though, I'm looking to get another DI Optical red dot that was just never released to civvies and it's relatively new

could be a CYA thing. again, I don't know of any legislation or government action that would require it, unless it was classified in part or in whole (even then they defer to ITAR rules sometimes and sell it to civvies anywho)

>>33753873
it's solid. I'm not one to fold my stocks often, but I have no concerns about this breaking. M+M uses a metal hinge they designed for it, which they claim makes it sturdier, but i haven't tested it in any meaningful way

it's made for their M10X, not the regular AK rear trunnion

you honestly shouldn't need it; they're interfacing polymer with steel and it doesn't reinforce that interface. i think it was just a more convenient design choice for them than trying to design around an AK rear trunnion

You need real insurance bro. I got rear ended at a red light last year, and I thought I was going to get screwed because the guy who hit me barely had a scratch on his SUV. The cop agreed with him that with all the damage on my car, his should have been messed up too, therefore the damage couldn't have been from him. Well I got my deductible back and my rate didn't go up so they must have got the other company (I think he had progressive) to pony up the cash. Insurance is like a lawyer, you need the absolute best you can afford.

They all do the same thing, halfmoons were the first 74 brakes IIRC, then zigzags, then short collars, then long collars which are current

There was also a switch between one piece and two piece manufacturing early int he development of halfmoons and zigzags

>>33755629
Using this pic as a reference >>33752687

The first two are zigzags (first is Bulgarian and second is Russian, ignore the Bulgarian one as they don't apply to dates here), they were on Soviet rifles from 1979 to 1982-1983

Next two are called either short collar or smooth collar or faceted (I've always used faceted which isn't 100% correct with very late brakes of this design) and were on Soviet rifles from 1983 to 1989 with some slight variation in them in 1988-1989

The last two are called long collar or extended collar or AK74M brake (I've always used long collar) and they've been on Russian rifles from 1990 until today

I'm missing the earliest 74 brake which is called a half moon and they were on Soviet rifles from the beginning of production until 1979-1980

>>33755877
Thanks for the (you)

>>33755900
ACKSHUALLY zigzags are one piece too, they didn't go to two piece construction until faceted brakes

Admittedly I don't know specifics on Bulgarian brakes but I'm like 99% Bulgarian zigzags are just straight up copies of Russian zigzags. My Bulgarian zigzag is of one piece construction. Their half moons are two pieces though

The two piece brakes are made from a second piece of material pressed into the face of the brake, if you look inside the back you can see two little shelves on the inside whereas on a one piece like a zigzag you can see from the front how the face of the brake is all connected (hard to explain without pics but I've got a cat sleeping on me so I can't get up and take some pics)

>>33756046
Zigzags have zigzag cuts up front hence where they get their name but from the side zigzags have a short collar with a sharper and more defined edge than faceted brakes

Ok cats left so I took some pics

Notice how the zigzag cuts are cut directly into the brake itself whereas on the faceted there's a separate washer that is pressed in that forms the half moons

I don't know much about 7.62x39 brakes but the ones that come on SLR107s are US made brakes that try to resemble long collar brakes but have some differences

I don't have an AK103 brake or a 7.62 US made brake so I don't know how they compare exactly but if it's anything like the SLR104 brake and long collar brake it's close but not quite

Romanian, Polish, or pretty much any other surplus eastern european country will do great, though try and avoid "new production" croatian mags. I've heard sketchy things about those.

So potential first time buyer here. Took the advice of /akg/ from last night and went to my local gun shop. Started hunting for Romy/Serb AKs. They had 3 American ones and one WASR. Examined the outside of the WASR and it looked bretty gud. Asked the guy behind the counter to take the gun apart so i could examine the barrel for shavings/burrs/defects. I saw a little bit of shavings/burrs inside of the barrel, it didn't look like much but I've been told by Youtubers and lurking in this thread that that is a big red flag. They wanted $730 for it. Is this even remotely worth it?

Century generally does a shit job of cleaning them out.
Not a big deal, but it'd be a good idea to clean it before use.

>but I've been told by Youtubers and lurking in this thread that that is a big red flag
Nobody here has ever made such a statement, what Youtubers have said this?
Links?

>They wanted $730 for it
No.
Keep an eye here (link below), and find an FFL near you who does cheap transfers.

Tombstone Tactical has them for $650 shipped, so with a $15-20 transfer you'd save ~$50.

https://gun.deals/search/apachesolr_search/RI1805-N?is_firearms_wikiarms=0

>FFL
Federal Firearms License holder.
Basically any gun dealer.

>The one time I'll link Buds
Their FFL Finder will show the fee that dealer charges, at least in a lot of cases.
>You'll have to click on a specific dealer to see the info

https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/ffl.php

Buying a gun online is just like buying in store, save for a few extra steps

>Find an FFL
>Contact the FFL and tell them you'd like to do a transfer with them
>Buy the firearm from a shop, they'll either asked for your FFL to send their info, or if they have an "approved FFL" list you can just pick the FFL you've previously contacted.
>If not your FFL will have to send them the needed info, an email is usually what's warranted.
>Receive tracking info
>When your gun arrives, fill out 4470 and get background check.
>Take home your new rifle
Now if you live in a "waiting period" state, you'll have to wait to take it, but if you're in a free state, you'll walk out with your rifle.

>>
>>33757430
They are (excluding reverse dongs for underfolders, which I believe are Polish afaik), I was only suggesting linseed oil which I know will work, though it may not be the correct type of oil for Romy wood.
>>
>>33756853
Or you could use them and find out if they work or not. A lot of people on here read that korean mags are shit. So any time anybody asks if Korean mags are any good or not they all chime in with korean mags are shit. Be that guy that actually finds out if they're shit or not.

>I was only suggesting linseed oil which I know will work

not the guy you're responding to, but my dong, and most likely his too, is covered with shellac, just like the rest of the stock, so the linseed oil will not soak in to the wood or do any good. it'll just wipe on and wipe off.

Have you ever dealt with surplus wood furniture?

Shellac flakes off under certain conditions (most often after exposure to moisture for prolonged periods), and it doesn't stop. Unless you want everything to be sticky and disgusting after you touch it, you have to refinish. Oil-based finishes are easy to apply and compliment most furniture well. Look up Tru-Oil or Tung oil glossy finishes.

You don't have to sand or stain either. None of that "russian red" shit please.

The only thing promags and tapcos are good for IMO are committing suicide by inhaling fumes from the mags burning and melting

Egyptians work pretty well if you can find them.

Really, a good general rule is that all Euro AK mags are fine EXCEPT for Croatians, and to just avoid using anything made east of China (Worst Korea mags a shit, Best Korea mags a $$$, 'Merimags aren't cheap enough to justify buying over EU mags).

Nork mags are uncommon but not unobtanium

I doubt anyone has actually used enough nork mags that they can definitively say that they're good to go. Kind of silly anyways because they're more collector pieces than mags you look for when you need something that works.

That's correct I believe. I wanted to do a cashier's check instead of a MO because of that anon here recently who paid for something with a MO to a guy with tons of good feedback and it got stolen. I have cashed dozens of MOs receiving payment for stuff and I've never had to show ID. Banks and post offices all across the state, where they wouldn't recognize me. I don't want to put something in the mail that Joe Blow can steal and go cash without even having a matching ID.

It's all good. I might be going a different route anyway. I'm probably just going to pick up an SGL and have that converted rather than the Saiga I own.

At that point I'll probably just do the correct fs/gb, a reinforcement plate and a 5.5mm trunnion.
That and a 104 leaf, push button guide rod and 104 cleaning rod.

I hadn't even thought of that. Fug

It's probably only ok to scrub "SAIGA" and their symbols. At that point, it's not even worth it to me.

I'll just have the selector makings done and SBR info placed on the bottom.

On an AK-104 they are actually engraved "AK-104" with the caliber listed right underneath it, same as on a Saiga. Same font as "SAIGA" and everything. But that's all that's engraved, they don't have the oval logo things or whatever.
