So, how long until every single PVS7/PVS14 in the military is replaced by the GPNVG?
>>

GPNVGs cost around 45,000 bones a piece. Digital Night vision will most likely replace analog systems in the future. It's much easier to integrate thermal imaging and other systems into digital nvg platforms.

Digital platforms don't have the light amplification of tubes, and for the same reason solid state guitar amps sound like shit so everyone uses tube. It doesn't HAVE to be analog, but transistors just don't use the same process, and in trying to make a natural signal, they just produce a shitload of squarewave and grate the user's senses be it in shitty distortion on solid state guitar amplifiers being shrill or thin sounding when distorted, or night vision goggles based on what is essentially a digital camera and requires an active IR light source to see shit, instead of being passive, or being a bulky and relatively large unit intended for long range observation, much like your video, resorting to transparent marketing tricks such as comparing a magnified optic to one like a PVS-14 which isn't magnified, making sure to crank it out of focus just a tad bit. Personally, I don't really see a future for digital in the night vision world, being that it's almost primarily focused on navigation, and not recording, sighting or viewing in any capacity that even requires or grants an advantage to magnification.
>>
>>33749785
I'm also pretty sure they're $40,000 a pop because L3 knows that anyone who will buy their systems will pay whatever they want for it. Like a PVS-15 for $12,000 even though the tubes are only $2,000 a piece at retail and it's probably not more than $1,000 to produce a housing with collimated tube housings and a circuitboard to control the goggle.
>>
>>33750106
>Like a PVS-15 for $12,000 even though the tubes are only $2,000
this is advanced judaism
>>
>>33750435
damn right. And you KNOW those tubes don't cost more than $800 a pop at manufacture. Such is the premium you pay from the suppliers of tubes to the zionist forces of the Jew S A
>>
>>33750056

We're reaching the point where digital and tube amplifiers are indistinguishable to anyone not playing them though.
>>
>>33750503
but have we reached the point where they are indistinguishable to those playing them? Those that will act to correct when the tone sounds shit? No. And when the player isn't happy, no one who matters is happy.
>>
>>33749703
They should buy enough batteries for the ones they have now before buying new ones.
>>
>>33749703
about 15-20 years. Shorter if we get a wholesale invasion of an inferior country before then.
>>
Never. By the time its practical and cost effective to give everyone panoramic, it'll be old and busted tech. As in, by the time it was practical to give everyone Starlight scopes, PVS-4s and upwards were available and thus were issued instead, and right now the PSQ-20 makes even those look like trash.
>>
>>33750056
>i can just HEAR the difference man! analog quality forever
No you can't. You're full of shit and it is provable in double blind tests.
I'm not going to even try to unfuck your understanding of digital imaging
Digital is better than analog. It will be this way the rest of your lifetime.
>>
>>>lol why doesn't everyone sell at their cost basis to me bro lol what a ripoff XD

Kill yourself
>>
>>33750056
Fag in denial detected.
Just admit that digital is the way of the future.

I hope I never wear them.

I'm fighter aircrew and the twin tube ones we have are fine. I've never been in a situation where the answer was better peripheral vision at night.
>>
>>33755235
suuuuuuuuure, that's why every magnified camera module, in which the image recording comes sooner, has to be compared to an unmagnified PVS-14 for which they need more glass behind the rear lens rather than say... A MAGNIFIED MODULE? You know those things exist? Everyone looking to show off their new digital night vision system apparently don't.
In every case, it's a PVS-14 with the focus cranked just a bit off so that it appears to have the resolution of Gen 1, rather than a properly focused magnified optic. >>33755440
I have not ONE TIME seen one of these gimmicky shits on their little color night vision camera module compare to a magnified optic that was properly focused, as opposed to a piece of equipment which is not made toward the purpose of long distance viewing and even then still has the focus set a little near or far from the actual thing they're supposed to be viewing.
>>
>>33749703
Never, as the PSQ-20 is getting issued.

They won't, because the I2 green provides the PERFECT contrast for replacing every PVS-7/14/15/18 in service with a DSNVG. The way I see this going is they replace the current generation of PVS-15's issued to every specialist, or the occasional PVS-18 with dual sensor night vision goggles. Such as the AN/PSQ-36. Even better, if they combined it with the PVS-21's capability of projecting the image onto a transparent screen that the user can see through if an overly bright situation suddenly develops. >>33755546

new digital one can superimpose thermal too. the picture looks better too

>>33755669
so I've heard, then again, the image from the tube and the thermal sensor are superimposed digitally anyhow, but what I want to see is combining them with the PVS-21's holographic screens. Then you have a nightvision unit that can't be turned against the user. Alternatively, the processor on your tube run units can't freeze, leaving you with a single image. Because there isn't one.
>>
>>33749703
Can anyone pls explain to a noob like me, why are this insanely overpriced things a thing, instead of just changing the shape of the lens for wider view, like in cameras?

because you need depth perception to navigate in night vision. A fish eye lens made to distort the field of view to be unnaturally wide is going to not only give you no depth perception, or a flat image, it's going to have a highly distorted depth of field. Doing this would naturally make navigation impossible, since a flat image allows you to at least get relative depth, and a dual tube non fish eye lens would give you actual depth perception.
>>
>>33755718
a fisheye typecan be very disorienting when you're moving in the dark and can't see a damn thing outside of it. Plus it makes things appear smaller, reducing your ability to locate threats outside of short ranges.

>>33755577
the AN/PSQ-36 is cool but the damn thing weighs twice as much as a set of AN/PVS-31s. like holy cow they're heavy, they're even heavier than the fucking GPNVGs.
>>
>>33749703
Why so many lenses?
Is this a 4d device?
>>
>>33755793
They'll lighten it up, I'm sure. then again tubes are light as fuck, being that the quadrocloptic monster you speak of only weighs like a pound and a quarter.
>>
>>33755816
To not fuck your depth perception.

Operators need to drive with NVGs.
>>
>>33755952
more like you need to be able to see what's going on inside rooms. With regular dual tubes you have a 40 degree FOV, it's like looking through a pair of toilet paper rolls.

>>33755793

Isee... I think I know what you mean... Something similar happened to me 2 weeks ago.
I was backpacking through woods, and since it got dark & foggy, I put on my glasses, which I hardly ever do, because I couldn't see shit.
Since they arent specifically made for me, I had fish-lens effect every time I looked down, kept tripping and even my labyrinth started to play tricks on me.
