You would be better off with a semiauto Thompson, it's roughly the same price as the M1, and has a 30 round clipazine full of .45 African Cretin Puncher. 8-shots of 30-06 is shit for CQB; too much recoil and noise, plus the greatly increased risk of overpenetrating and killing your neighbors.

The Garand is long, heavy, and overpowered as shit for HD, .30-06 will go through every interior wall in it's way and out the exterior wall. I would rather suggest an M1 Carbine, it's lighter, shorter, has a larger magazine, and is much easier to control in rapid fire.
It'll go through interior walls too, but it'll stop at a brick or concrete wall, the .30 Carbine cartridge is comparable to .357 Magnum or so

I have a p.38 for my home defense pistol.

I have a gun rack in my room with a k98, vz.24, Turk mauser, Type 99, M1 garand, M1 carbine, m39, 91/30, and a couple Enfields. My nightstand has at least a clip for any of these guns, and there is a bandolier of 8mm hanging on the rack. Bayonets are in the closet.
