If we got lucky and got a plastic hull 12 we would file the rim off of it and shove a 16 gauge shell in it. We had some even made down to the 0.410 gauge. Your adapters were always plastic with the brass or copper charge, and used a paper hull for the smaller shell. In the winter if we didnt have a cow or hog put up, we ate rabbits, deer, ect. There was never killing for sport it was for food for the family. And seven brothers and three sisters we learned no to miss.

I hunt rabbits and pheasants with nickel-plated #5's and a fairly open choke (usually either skeet or improved cylinder). Good out to around 40 yards, doesn't mash things inside 20 yards. I've never had more than 1 or 2 pellets in the meat of anything I've killed.

And I'm not alone in this, take a look at Federal Prairie Storm, Fiocchi Golden Pheasant, etc. Large, usually plated and buffered shot of moderate charge weights moving modestly fast. They produce good consistent patterns and each individual pellet carries lethal energy so you're not having to hit it with the entirety of the fucking pattern.

Hey fudds. Is there a caliber that can be handloaded for deer and handloaded up to bear/elk without causing undue meat damage? I have 7mm WSM right now and its fucking stupid, going to toss it for a much more pleasant round that doesn't blow a whole in everything form a mile away.

Large base on a short action was a terrible decision, and reloading this bloated casing pretty much requires a minimum load that's entirely too much for small deer.
