Combat with knives, swords, fists, etc, required had a higher skill gap than modern weapons.

Let's say you pitted a well trained swordsman against some peasant with the same gear. The swordsman is extremely likely to win.

Let's say you pit a well trained soldier against some somali with an AK. All dipshit has to do is pull the trigger in a certain direction with no skill at all, and all the skill and training in the world is completely negated.

The skill gap is so narrow now you have to be very good.
