Could a modern APFSD from a MBT penetrate the armor of a WW2 battleship? How about a HE round?
>>33741024
Yes.
>apfsd
possibly
>HE
probably not
>>33741024
Moderm APFSDS can penetrate up to 700-800 mm RHA. The heaviest battleship armor was around 400-450mm thick. It'd do fuck all with the exception of a magazine hit and even that is probably unlikely.
HE wouldn't have a chance on all but the thinnest armor like on the superstructure.

What is the penetration rating for DU autocannon rounds?
>>33741304
What about modern HEAT ?, think the spalling is enough to do anything.?
>>33741024
Penetrate armor? Probably. Incapacitate the ship? Probably not.
>>33741419
What if it hit below the water line?
>>33741352
Accoeding to wikipedia the GAU-8 can do 76mm at 300m
>>33741375
Modern HEAT would be able to go through depending on the individual weapon.
Damage done by spalling would depend on what got hit and where. My best guess is it would do very little damage because after penetrating it well most likely encounter dozens of feet of air instead of anything important.

a 40mm hole won't sink a battleship in any realistic amount of time.
>>33741024
How about stuffing twelve 120mm autocannons on a single ship and have them built into sponsons, like a modern ship of the line?
>>33741482
Would do less damage than 1 missile which would take up less space and have greater range.
>>33741024
APFSDS and HEAT will penetrate and then promptly do fuck all on the other side.
HE will do fuck all except against exposed directors, crew, and anti-aircraft machine gun positions.
It's possible that incidental APFSDS or HEAT hits against enclosed anti-aircraft artillery mounts may partially disable them or kill some of the crew inside them, but will on the large scale impact little of the ship's fighting ability.

Germany experimented with stabilization of a land 155mm gun on a ship. They decided to not continue.
>>33741444
A clean small hole is not a disaster. Damage control was amazing on those
>>33741024
There's a reason why Battleships went out of style during WW2
Contemporary weapons could sink them
Modern ones would without question
>>33741615
Modern weapons can sink modern ships. The reason battleships were decommissioned was due to air power.
>>33741651
Which was a delivery system for those contemporary weapons
>>33741482
Train them to the air instead
(Planes w/ bombs > really big, slow, thicc ships)
