Just imagine the combat drop during the Normandy landings, it's your first non training drop and all you can hear and see is flak and planes getting blown up. Then when you hit the ground you are scattered, behind enemy lines and without reinforcement till the landings are done in ~8hours time. There were many "Elite" SS-Panzerdivisons, like the Leibstandarte or Das Reich and maybe th 14.SS-PzDiv Hitlerjugend(considering they were young boys with little to no training), but mostly because they got all the good stuff at the end of the war.
