Who the fuck said that. I fire warning shots constantly in my line of work and 90% of the time it works. Either to reveal an actual threat or dissuade possible combatants from engaging.

'warning shots' are retarded when it's police or a civilian doing it because I mean... the point is not to shoot someone, just to 'scare them off'? then what the fuck are you shooting at? someone's property, other people? one of the most basic rules of safety is "be sure of your target and what lies behind it", just because you're intentionally missing the bad guy doesn't mean you're missing anything else, discharging a firearm outside of a controlled environment with other people anywhere in front of the muzzle is inherently fucking dangerous

Warning shots are more of a naval tradition.

Let's be honest here: the only reason why warning shots are a bad idea in a self-defense situation is because of the (((legal system))). If a clear and present danger exists to your life, and you're capable of discharging rounds under a circumstance that endangers neither anyone elses life or property, and simultaneously removing the threat via fear - why is that a bad thing? The only real answer is because the powers at be will look for any reason to disarm the populace. Even if you didn't harm anyone, you will be disarmed under the guise of 'well you could have'

To be honest, even then it's kind of retarded ROE. If people aren't backing down from lasers and zip flares, then warning shots are kind of superfluous.

I've had warning shot ROEs, but never used them because people either immediately stop/surrender when they get a laser on them, or they immediately escalate and the situation jumps past warning shots and straight to lethal shooting.
