I have a question that's been bugging me for a while.
I got pulled over once because I swerved heavily on the road (driving a friend home and almost pulled into the wrong parking lot).
Officer said he smelled alcohol really strong coming out of the car. Dunno wtf he was smelling but he asked if I'd consent to a field sobriety test.

I was sober so I passed easily and me and him just shot the shit for a few minutes while another officer ran the serial number on my concealed carry.

My question is, what would have happened if I'd said no when he asked me to do the test? Even after he said he could still smell it really strong but admitted that I was obviously sober (friend hadn't been drinking either) so what's the protocol there?

I'm in Oregon if it matters.
>>
>>33731459
In NY refusing a prescreening device (Intoximeter) is a Violation (Ticket).
If most Cops pulled you out because they smelled your buddy, they would see in 4 seconds that you were not Drunk after doing HGN - Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test

One year mandatory suspension of license if you refuse a field sobriety test or a breathalyzer. This is known as "chemical revocation"
>>
>>33731519
Basically it is a NHTSC (Nationally Standardized Field Sobriety Test), where you have the person stand still, look slightly up, and without moving their head, follow a Pen or finger, back and forth. When their eyes are all they way to the right or left, the eyeball will involuntarily jerk or twitch, indicating the prescience of alcohol. The more intoxicated the person is, the more pronounced it is, and the onset is before maximum deviation (all the way to the right or left). When you work midnights, you do this a lot, and can predict what the person is going to blow, pretty accurately

Certification is a week long school, where they bring in intoxicated people, drunk to different levels, and we practice on them. This is followed up by years of practice on Accident Scenes.

Using the DMT is not required here under state statute because it simply specifies "field sobriety test" although our policy says to call for a traffic unit which has one. Weird that you would only issue a violation for that in NY. Lots of drunk drivers?

When I started, we usually won DWI trials. Then there was a big push to arrest DWIs. Since then, several former DA DWI Prosecutors have gone into private practice. Now we face Lawyers who know DWI Law and Tests sometimes better than we do. They do a great job pointing out inconsistencies, and downplay what we did right. Now we Usually loose DWI' Trials, unless they killed someone. It's soul Sucking. Just before I retired I arrested a guy wit 15 Felony DWI convictions, for DWI. WTF. Then when he kills somebody, -where were the cops...

As oppose to what? What do you do to rehabilitate citizens. Jail doesn't work nor is it effective to prevent going back to narcotic abuse. People don't walk out of jails REHABILITATED, they need a program from that.

It's medication that prevents others from going into a medical emergency of painful withdrawal and prevents the high.

>>
>>33734634

Yeah it gets me too, but I don't make (or have to enforce, thank god) the law. If you're in a castle doctrine state, if someone comes into your house and is an actual threat to your physical well being then you can legally ventilate them. You'll still probably have to go through some kind of civil trial and the dindu's family will probably try to sue you, but still.

In non-castle doctrine states, you are legally obligated to try to escape before you use any kind of force against the invader.

>>33734688
>Guarantee

No guarantees in the legal system, anon.
Talk to any lawyer about this and they'll all tell you the same thing. If you take someone's life, no matter how legally or morally justified you are, you can fully expect to spend at least a little time in the slammer and deal with lawsuits from the dead person's family.

it all depends on the city. a diploma will always help, even in a city or state that doesnt require it. However the more south you go the more desperate they get for cops. Baltimore DC Richmond and tons of other counties are desperate for cops. I used some neighbors or friend's parents for references. Think a little outside of the box. usually the shittier the city the more desperate they are. Believe me I work for a desperate city. It's a police factory, we cant hold onto people, and we cant get people to apply.

>My question is, what would have happened if I'd said no when he asked me to do the test? Even after he said he could still smell it really strong but admitted that I was obviously sober (friend hadn't been drinking either) so what's the protocol there?

A tricky situation. Between the swerving and smelling alcohol, he had PC to pull you out of the car. Did he lie about smelling it on you? Maybe he did, maybe he smelled it on your friend. Regardless, it would be hard for you to prove he didn't.
So if he decided to bust your window and drag you out of the car, he would most likely end up in the clear and, at worst, you'd be arrested for obstructing his duties, or at best out a window.

99% of the time, if an officer asks you to do the roadside field sobriety tests they decided you're probably drunk. Slurred dpeech, odor of alcohol, driving fucked up, etc. If you refuse they'd *probably* take you in regardless so you can use the breathalyzer or get your blood drawn. If you refuse those then your license is subject to being suspended. You can appeal the suspension if you think the arrest was bullshit, but it's typically an ass pain and your typical drunk asshole isn't going to win that appeal, you would need to actually be the rare case where there's evidence that some corrupt pig took you in for nothing.

The field sobriety tests are meant to strengthen an officer's probable cause so they can take you to jail if you fail, but what they actually end up being is a chance for you to prove your innocence so you don't go to jail and get your car towed.
>>
>>33735246

>>33735038
yup, a lot of departments rankings is something like: Police Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, captain, etc

>>33735134
criminal record isnt too big of a deal as long as it isnt recent and something severe. Just be honest when they interview you. I had a few people in my class with arrest records. One was even arrested for a felony, but he turned out to be my partner and a super good officer so far.

A degree will mainly help with promotions, not so much with hiring. The hiring focus is on if you're gonna be a good officer or a lying, dishonest one pretty much.
>>
>>33735295

Thinking of doing 2 years in uni for police foundations or a similar program and them joining the military, and once Im finished serving(Hopefully as MP) to join RCMP or just municipal police if RCMP doesnt work out.
Anyone do what I did or close to?Would a couple years in the military plus university help my chances of getting hired?I have no criminal record, going to the gym to get fit, been shooting since I was 12,and I really want to become a LEO.
In Canada.

Is it still possible for me to become a cop if I was arrested once for fighting? No conviction, just got told not to do it again. After that I was still able to get my cc permit and guard card. Any advice is much appreciated.

It depends on what is was and how long ago.

>>33735756
same thing here. Just be honest about it when they ask.

Also don't make like your a non violent peaceful person though because that might prevent you from moving on because they would think you wouldnt fight back or step into a fight to stop it.

Anyone got any effective ways to get transient smell out of your uniform?

What's it like to be issued a gun that you hate? Do you just get used to it and accept it or do you screech until they let you carry anything but .40s&w?
>>
>>33736017
My dept will let you carry a personally owned gun if it's another glawk brand glawk in 9, 40, or 45. They issue a .40 but they're switching to 9 because not enough females are qualifying with their .40s (my theory)

I don't like the g22, and I would screech if it was a gen 3. I'm not a fan of Glock but the gen 4s are acceptable.

Stupid shit the public does:
>Run up to my car window to flag me down like they're about to pull an execution, only to tell me about their bike that got stolen last week
>Drive slow when I'm behind them, like there's no way an emergency services worker might be in a hurry (we don't even enforce traffic laws but if you're afraid I'm clocking you just move, in fact just always move, bitch get out da way)
>Cause accidents when were rolling code 3 (we're liable for any accidents that happens when we have lights and siren on, we'll be written up, that's why we don't want to use them)
>Give money to homeless people, serious estimate here 99% of them are hard drug users, have warrants, or are registered sex offenders. There's a reason they're unemployable and your money is likely going straight to gangs and drug cartels where they get their dope from
>Bitch about taxes while simultaneously bitching that police don't do enough to stop crime, or bitch about taxes then complain that retards work for the department when it's a blue collar salary job

>My dept will let you carry a personally owned gun if it's another glawk brand glawk
I guess that's not so bad. How angry would they be if they issues you a G22 and you swapped in a .357sig barrel and carried that instead?
My city's PD uses the M&P40 but the older guys all have gen 2 G22's, been considering joining for a lot of reasons and wouldn't dislike a .40 cal but I'd rather have .357sig like our state troopers use.

Don't know if you're in the south or not, but there are always middle age black men walking around passing out fliers for their church and asking for donations for their "charity" to keep kids off the street. 5 gallon buckets usually like the fire department fundraisers.
How are those people usually treated? Is it a front for buying drugs and paying rent or legit?

Law enforcement, the one job where people get mad at you for not doing your job and for doing it.

>wah why dont cops enforce traffic laws!
>wah why are cops giving tickets instead of going to crimes

>that cop thinks he can go through the red light, speed and park anywhere just cause he's in a cop car!
I'll be sure to wait at all the traffic lights, follow the speed limit and find a parking stall next time a high priority call comes in

>omg why are they so many cops at a car accident?!
Uhh traffic control, possible injuries, officer safety?

>people who don't realize most police work is done after the crime

And the list goes on...
>>
>>33736136
You would be absolutely FUCKED if you got caught doing that. You don't understand how strict law enforcement is. Any gun you use you have to have completed a thorough qualification course with. We can't do any modifications to any weapons except for sights (even PDs admit Glock plastic sights are shit lmao)

Every single round you carry must be department issued and you're responsible for every single round, both shooting them or losing them. I wasn't told this specifically but I'm sure losing even a single round would mean being written up... Don't even get me started on losing a piece of gear or getting it stolen out of your vehicle. You'd be a bottom of the barrel pay officer working night shift for the rest of your career.

My personal favorite is that all police are from the same department, or somehow related.

And I'm not even a cop.
>>
>>33736165
We can't tell people they can't ask for money or hold up a sign in public, freedom of speech etc. They can't stand in the median of a road that's not designed for foot traffic though, yet they always fucking do despite there being plenty of safe sidewalk space for them to beg for drug money on.

Yeah it's probably a clever way of begging. No one's really holding some random guy with a bucket accountable for actually donating the money he receives for his fake charity.

City cop for a little over 3 years.

>policeman
>working for 12 hours straight

HAHAHAHHAHA! Pigs are fucking lazy cunts & welfare queens.
>>
>>33736323
same for my area too. Illegal to stand on the median asking for money. Even people collecting money for charity, selling paper etc are in violation. But are you really gonna be that asshole who tells the group of kids and parents that they cant do that or they'll be cited or arrested...
>>
>>33736338
This is the most difficult, strenuous, and stressful job I've had. A 12 hour holdover shift is the regular. We operate on a skeleton crew because even the biggest city in the state pinches its shekels. You try hopping call to call with no chance at a bathroom break let alone a meal break because your asshole sergeant will chew you out again. Seriously, it's a labor nightmare. When I quit (inevitable at this point, I can't handle it) I'm going to be one of those badge lickers that tells officers thanks.

>>33736340
>But are you really gonna be that asshole who tells the group of kids and parents that they cant do that
Yes because when they get gored by some soccermom rolling her minivan over onto them I'm going to be held liable for just driving by earlier.

I don't do traffic stops or arrest lawbreakers. Please don't try to fix your squad car PC or your desk computer because you'll just make it worse. Also don't be a dick and run fucking Seti@Home and bitch at me when your computer is slow.

T. Police IT

P.S. don't punch the screen when the computer doesn't do what you want, no one believes me when I submit a purchase request for a new monitor or replacement screen and the reason is "damaged due to misunderstanding of how touchscreens work"
>>
What kind of things do they ask you on the polygraph test?
>>
>>33736392
Its not enforced where I am. However one day when some election sign holder or fundraiser is fucked up doing that I think then it will, but not before blaming the driver
>>
>>33736392
Well, ok then, sorry.
In Poland cops are the "sickiest" people in the country judging by the statistics of sick leave, and they retire when they hit 40. Parasites.

I mean, that's not so strange. Say you become a cop at 20. You work 20 years, then retire. Makes sense to me.

Hell, I enlisted at 17, so I could retire at 37.

Doing the same thing except in the UK, I'd recommend you look and see how the LEO's in your area recruit, if they do campaign style I'd recommend you apply when the next one comes up otherwise you will be waiting a long while (2 years tops, 6 months minimum). It might not be like that in Canada though.

Military service may be useful but it depends if they offer specific benefits to ex-military, I know the NYPD offers a lot of benefits and actively recruits ex-military but honestly if they don't mention it then I would assume the process is merit based on how well you do in their recruitment process.

tldr
Unless they specifically state they are looking for ex-military it won't help you one bit, focus on learning about their recuritment process it's stages, what type of tests they put you through.

Again regarding uni it depends if they are looking for a degree which they are probably not, usually application's to the police force ignore CV's and the like asking only for basic ICT, English and math skills.

Hope this helps dude, if you were applying in the UK I could give you a lot more definite info but the best I can say is study their process of recruitment and apply whenever possible if you really wanna do it.
>>
>>33738233
Quick clarification
Although they usually do ignore CV's you will probably have to fill in an online application

And by the looks of it if you complete your two years in UNI you won't have to complete an entrance exam and instead move onto the next stage, honestly looking at their recruitment page I'm kind of jealous of many less steps you guys have to go through, over here in the UK you have to complete a ton of assessments before being accepted and even if you pass it just means you get stuck on a waiting list depending on how well you scored. (unless your in the top 90 percent you are gonna be waiting at least a year or two before you get taken into the actual training)

I'm currently a recruit and going through the academy. How much does knowing another language help you out? In terms of getting details and assignments
