I built a lower without a punch set just fine. An upper would be significantly more challenging, though.

Not a bad idea at all.i used some jenga blocks.
I like using hard wooden dowels, aluminum cleaning rods or anything plastic. Just be careful with your hammer.

The only part I needed a punch on was the bolt catch/release, i ended up fucking it up and marring the little nub that holds the lever and just bought that brownells meme punch for way too much but it got the job done.
You can build a lower without punches. The most pain in the dick part is the bolt catch and for that I used good needle nose pliers with electrical tape wrapped around the tips to prevent marring the finish of the receiver. It worked great.

you could easily do that, especially if you use a padded vice to press the pins in.

Punches are like 5 dollars a set...

I built my lower with an oven mitt, Home Depot from 1990 hammer, needle nose pliers, and some channel locks. I fucked up the finish a little bit but didn't care much because it's my varmint gun. The biggest problem I've run into is the pin that secures the trigger is either too small for my Anderson lower or the hole drilled for that pin is too large. Hopefully gonna solve it with some loctite or some sort of glue. Otherwise gonna order a new trigger and pin set and hope that works.
I actually just did this yesterday. Push the punch in the hole enough that it stands, fold your plastic parts bag over the pin and the under side of the receiver, then use some channel locks/pliers to squeeze the pin in. If you're really worried about your finish use another zip loc baggie

You can get a punch set at harbor freight for sub 15 bucks. Even cheap shitty tools are better than no tools.
