I ordered a barreled receiver and it arrived at my ffl yesterday. I don't get home until friday and after that there's still a 10 day waiting period. So fucking excited to build this thing. I bought a MDT LSS chassis for it.

How far do you guys shoot? What MOA? What caliber and what load? What optics/magazines? Did anyone glass bed the barrel?

The one I bought is 24" heavy threaded barrel in .308. going to attach a BRT covert comp to it. Never shot rifles before and I'm just buying some german surplus 7.62 for now.
>>
Whats the dirt on Howa bolt actions? I hear the receivers are questionable material wise. Perfectly fine for the round they're chambered in, but if you try and force it on hotter rounds is may explode.

They seem to come up to 7 rem mag, so i can't imagine the receiver being weak.
>>
>>33732849
No issues with mine, only issue I had was I had to switch out the extractor spring with and AR safety spring otherwise, took all off ten minutes and the dissembly of the bolt takes 5 seconds. (I heard this only happens in the .223 models)
>>
>>33732849
>>33732913
I should elaborate only issue with the extractor thing I've seen isnon the 1500 in .223, but if you look it up it's not very frequent. And Howa answered the phone within 5 rings and I was on with a tech in 3-4 minutes.

I have a 1500, in .223, 22" barrel, I shoot 100-300 yards (I've seen videos of a .223 1500 shooting 1k yards)
I consistently get 1-2.5 moa at 200 yards, with just a 55grain wolf gold. That's with the stock Houge stock, I want the archangel stock (the one 1500/223 I saw had that stock and was plinking a 8" target @1000yards)
I have the stock Nikko sterling 3-9/42 scope, it's decent but I'll get a zeiss later on(I do photo and I use Sony/zeiss glass only, my preference)

>>
>>33741526
>>33741538
I've ditched the german surplus idea and I'm now considering 168gr BTHP by PPU for $0.75 per round.

http://www.sgammo.com/product/308-win-762x51-ammo/20-round-box-308-match-168-grain-bthp-prvi-partizan-ammo-pp321

I'm not shooting comp or anything so as long as I get around 1 moa at 100-300 yards, I'm happy.
I also bought a SWFA SS 3-15x42 scope for it.
Just using a magpul CTR stock and hogue grips on the MDT LSS chassis.

>>33741568
Did you get a factory threaded barrel or do any glass bedding? Any issues I should be aware off?
>>
>>33732671
>>33741538
IIRC with .308 you should be able to shoot up to 500-600 with 168gr SMK loads, after which you'll need 175gr or higher to avoid your bullets eating shit because of wind.

Your ideal bullet will somewhat depend on your twist rate, with faster twists being better for heavier bullets.

Surplus is absolute shit for getting good groups due to the high variance of manufacturing. Ideally you'll want to get match ammo (from Federal, Hornady, etc.) with open-/hollow-tip and boat tail for long range.

Glass bedding and bottom metal is unnecessary for any chassis worth a damn, and the LSS should fall under it.

For magazines, the AI-pattern PMAGs are the best bang for the buck (like $30 or something compared to $50-70 for others), but YMMV. Sometimes they don't drop free or require some feed lip break-in before working.

Otherwise you can shell out for an Alpha Mag ($50) or an actual AI magazine. Make sure you get the AI (single-stack single-feed) and not the AX (double-stack single-feed) pattern ones since the AX aren't reverse-compatible.

I don't think compensators are ever used on precision rifles since muzzle brakes are a lot more effective at reducing recoil and muzzle rise. You will need crush washers or a jamb nut to time them properly.
>>
>>33741782
How is it that hollow points are more accurate than regular pointy tip projectiles. I know its a thing but it seems kinda counterintuitive.
>>
>>33741782
I didn't get the covert comp to reduce recoil or muzzle rise, which I don't really care about. I got it just to direct concussion away from myself and everyone near me.
>>
>>33741826
Fuddlore says because there's an air bubble at the front while in-flight but it's untrue. The reason is because making bullets the FMJ way (copper jacket molded front to back) is less consistent than the hollow point way (copper jacket molded back to front).

>>33741829
If you care about getting small groups, you will care about recoil and muzzle rise.

The key to accuracy is reducing variance of all kinds between shots. This includes gun positioning, your positioning, the amount of powder in each cartridge, the shape and weight of the bullet, etc. For these reasons the best way to get high accuracy is to hand-load (to reduce powder/bullet weight differences), have a heavy rifle (more weight = less movement), use a thicker barrel (more consistent between shots), and have an effective muzzle brake.
>>
>>33728765

>making bullets the FMJ way (copper jacket molded front to back) is less consistent than the hollow point way (copper jacket molded back to front)

So if they jacketed an fmj bullet the same way the did a hollow point would it be the most accurate?

Also because this applies to the jacketing I assume that means that the cheap tula hollowpoint .223 isn't more accurate than the fmj stuff? Since they use unjacketed bi metal projectiles.

It's a factory barrel, end is not treaded. Just the stock blued barrel. I've had no issues, just clean it and follow the break in procedure(follow manual).
.308 is solid. I plan on another 1500, 30-06 or 308(the whitetail kit is pretty solid/10rd detachable/stronger scope/bipod-$600~)
Great rifle and it's built very good, glad I chose this over the savage or the rem compareables.

The "hollow-point" nature is a by-product of a manufacturing process developed for consistency. It's not designed explicitly for fragmentation like typical HP loads, but to have superior ballistics.

Notice in the picture that the FMJ (M80 ball) has an opening at the bottom (where the casting stops) whereas the SMK has the opening at the top.

The reason the match ammo is expensive (e.g. for .308 it's ~$1.00/round compared to $.40-.50/round for cheap steel) is due to the higher QA and manufacturing required to achieve the consistency. Tula is good for plinking since it's cheap (hard primers and occasional double-loads be damned), but no one ever seriously competes in a match with it.

As an additional note, brass vs steel casing doesn't really matter for accuracy (it's just harder on the extractor) as evidenced by the very favorable Hornady Steel Match (~75-80 cpr), but lots of people get brass so they can handload in the future. It's just that cheaper ammo generally uses steel, and cheaper ammo is generally lower quality.

>>33741717
Plenty of people have had decent luck with PPU BTHP for practice, but I've never seen brag-worthy groups from it. The most annoying thing I found with them is that the COAL varies quite a bit from cartridge to cartridge, which means sometimes it's a pain in the ass to chamber them in my R700. The brass is decent for reloading from what I hear, too.
>>
>>33732954
Good luck with the race war, if you be a Suidlander.
>>
>>33742511
Anything you would suggest for practice? Considering this
http://www.sgammo.com/product/308-win-762x51-ammo/20-round-box-762x51-nato-147-grain-fmj-bt-ammo-made-germany-men-2016-men

and the 168gr BTHP PPU, getting both at least to see which my rifle likes. Good brass for reloading is also welcome.
>>
>>33742628
Cursory search says that ammo should be fine, but the results are from M14/FAL forums, whose barrels use 1:14 and 1:12 twists respectively.

Like I said earlier, faster twists are for heavier bullets, so you might get subpar results with a 147 gr in a 1:10. There's a bit of debate over whether overstabilization is that big of an issue, but anecdotal evidence says 1:10 .308 barrels work better with the 168gr+ range.

In the end, every rifle is different due to barrel harmonics, so to get the absolute best performance takes a lot of trial and error. On the plus side, people seem to like the MEN brass (non-crimped primers, boxer primed, pretty consistent) for reloading.
