I've been seeing dozens of new milsurp posters in the threads lately; this has filled me with the joy of a thousand rounds of 9mm.
So go out when its overcast and get some sexy pix of them old war horses and come back into your mom's basement and...
POST 'EM SURPS!!!!
i haven't been to the range in 3 months. WTF did the time go.
ugh. i still need to get some more powder so i can do a batch of reloads for this old girl.

Na, I'll stick with Detroit. It's nice here and we have better beer.
>>33728011
Gonna live out that Gran Torino dream huh.
>>33728252
Never seen that movie all the way through honestly.
Also my neighborhood is much too nice for such concerns.
I still need to shoot my 1903. Might try for tomorrow.
>Overcast
I think "State on Fire" lighting is even better than overcast
>>33728011
Though you might want this.
Which set of grips looks better?
Both came with the gun. Personally, I like the aesthetics of the wood, but the plastic grips are so much more comfortable to hold.
>>33728618
Yeah I followed that. $3000 for a fucking refinished one. I only paid $2000 for mine in unaltered condition. I could probably double that if I were so inclined.
>>33728632
I like the black grips imo they go well with the gun and make it look like it has seen the wars
>>33728011
>Detroit
You a Wings fan billy? I was literally up there for the Wings v Avs game last month.
>>33728710
Yes, though it's a shame the state we're in at the moment. We desperately need 2 new goalies.
It's good you got to see the Joe though.

the food at scottrade center sucks ass. they had a killer chicken and waffle sammich once upon a time, but in keeping with blues tradition they got rid of it and kept all the shit food.
next year when I go up there I'll let you know. if ticket prices arn't too bad I can get you a seat too and we can talk about cosmoline during the intermissions.

they'll be fine. Holland seems to have some of his mojo back. and the goalies are fine (except for howards salary and injury proneness).
they just need 2 top 4 defencemen. at some point they need to cut sling load on a couple of the kids and accept that they'll be 30 goal scorers on a different team.
Larkin/Mantha/Athanasiou are the core of the next cup team.

Why are pre WWII kar98's so damn expensive?
I went to a gun show today and saw a couple and the people were all asking like 1200-1500. Were they just dicks or are they that expensive?
they were all non matching numbers
>>33729064
It finally arrived though. An early L series. Made around early 1945. Surprisingly still original matching and not refinished. Little bits of it's original paint still there. Just was restocked and I think the front band was replaced as it's the stamped ring and not the ring like a Berthier has.
>>33729112
Looks nice next to my WWII correct pre armistice made one.

>>33729191
yea, i got lucky. they only made 5,000 of those federal police ones
>>33728883
We'll see. I don't think we're gonna have a Cup worthy team until we replace Howard. He just isn't good under pressure. And losing Datsuyk last season hurt us even more.

Whys it so hard to find a 1903 with just a cutdown stock and original sights? I got a stock and hardware set for $25 and need a rifle now. I might just try and find a drilled and tapped one, with the original barrel length, and make a pseudo sniper out of it.
>>33729599
$625 or so. It's a great gun, shockingly accurate.
>finally get new k98 trigger with sear for Yugo mauser

Is the bayonet mount thing over the muzzle of the Lee Enfields prior to the Mk 4 no 1 a dust cover or flash suppressor or something as well? And can one be added to the Mk 4?
>>33732343
Are you talking about the nose cap? Its just a nose cap, i sits more or less flush with the muzzle.
I suppose with some work it could fit but its more effort than im willing to put in
>>33732392
Ah ok. I like the look of it and the older non-spike bayonets, but the only ones available to me at the moment are the mk 4 unfortunately.
>>33732457
No problem. The older ones do look sexy as all hell but i think the no4s are better rifles overall
>>33731923

>>33732505
There are several mutilated sporters but I can't bring myself to buy anything that haram
>>33732520
If I'm not mistaken, they are both different models (like mk1 and mk3 maybe) and it didn't look like the stocks would swap.
Maybe I'm wrong though. I'm not too knowledgeable about them.
I'm considering trying to find a stock and barrel for my Krag to de-sporterize it.
>>33727388

I know this is the milsurp gen and maybe this question belongs in /qtddtot/ but why does no one make a large caliber modern rolling block action rifle?
>>33732843
Why would they?
>>33732588
Good luck. It'll be cheaper to just buy a proper krag.
But if you wanna be a gun necromancer, go nuts.
>>33732843
Rolling block isn't all that strong honestly. Great for the days of black powder and can handle certain smokeless calibers (in their moderate military loadings) but it isn't well suited for modern loads.
>>33732457
they do have a "pig sticker" bayonet for the No4
If I want a martini to actually take out to the range a martini-enfield is the way to go, right? Should I expect to pay around $700 for one in decent condition?
>>33733088
try to find one of the .303 conversions, they usually run for less than 700
>>33733038
Actually given what I paid for it and given the prices I've seen on GB for parts it would probably be about the same amount of money. Depending on if the gunsmith rapes me or not.
Turns out applying urushi is pretty hard.
using a bubba'd stock to practice first, but i think i need a much higher quality brush, shit has so many lines on it.
Thinned it 50/50 just on a guess. its given the wood a slight golden hue, stupidly thin layer though. Will need atleast 4 until it looks right.

>>33731471
It's hidden under the band though? It's going to be pretty hard to match the color.
>>33733500
It's also related to poison ivy. Enjoy itching.
>>33734604
When I bought my Trapdoor Springfield I joked about chopping the barrel off and putting a red dot and a vertical foregrip on it.
>>33734726
Yea the band hides it completly. color matching will be a bitch. The original Urushi varied by the maker and time of month, but the clear over many layers supposedly takes on a brown/red tint. The goop in the can has a rd orange hue to it, so I'm on the right track atleast. The golden first layer already looks like some of the handguards.
> Enjoy itching.
I'm immune. poison ivy doesn't touch me, and thus far sanding the bubba stock to get a usable splice didn't do anything, and the blob i dripped on myself of this cashew stuff hasn't done anything either.

Does it have an exposed hammer? If it does, it's probably a Winchester 97, which is what they used in WWI
Unfortunately, they're probably not true trenchers at a pawn shop. They're either Norinco clones, which are fine guns but not historical, or they're fake trenchers made by cutting down full length 97's like some sort of fucking savage.
The Model 12 is the other iconic trench shotgun, but looks more like a normal shotgun and is a bit harder to pick out by sight.

Yo I'm the M95 guy from the last thread. I see you have a ton of milsurps pictured individually, but do you have a picture of all of them together? How fucking many do you have total?
Also, thanks for the helpful info regarding the M95.
Ive got a couple of bad enfield clips, is there anything i can do to make them work better? file them down a bit, bend them with pliers, anything?
>>33736123
you could try those but note you may damage the clips further.
are you the guy getting the Australian surplus clips now?
>>33736123
I used long sockets from a socket wrench kit and a vice. Stick the socket sideways into the clip and tighten them together in a vice. Just start small, go slow, and it will bend out to fit properly.
>>33736206
Nah but i read about that last thread. Il order some next paycheck. Ive got some buddies coming down that want to go shooting, just trying to get something working so they can see how clips actually work
What's an average price for a No.4 Mk1 in good condition? I have the opportunity to get one locally, but it's $860. I know I've seen Enfields for way less, but I'm not a total expert on them.
Bore is bright and shiny. Wood has character, obviously.
>>33736948
probably $350-500 these days

Nope, no picture of them all together. As for how many... I dunno 30? If it's not 30 it's pretty close.

I have a new Yugo sks. It's my first gun and I want to take good care of it, starting with how I remove the cosmoline and finish the stock.
Advice?
>>33738164
oily rags. paper towels.
if its a LOT of cosmo, then wrap it in a towel and put it in a black trashbag and leave it in the sun on a hot day
>>33738164
shoot the gun, it will blow out and use up the cosmoline.
its good lube too for the bolt
This is she. Not a crazy amount of cosmo, but I want to be thorough. Advice as far as a finish?
>>33738219
Negative
I'm going to be buying my first milsurp rifle soon, and I've gotten it down to two rifles.
The Mannlicher m95 in 8x56, or the Yugo version in 8 millimeter Mauser.
The former is much more common, but the ladder has very common ammo.
Which should I buy?
>>33738265
Do you reload and how often do you plan on shooting?
>>33738298
I don't reload, and I've yet to find a place that sells bullets and the brass for 8x56.
>>33738319
Start. Graf's has both
>>33738396
I guess the only issue is how cost effective will it be, even with reloading, the cost of the equipment might end up putting more of a hole in my wallet than the gun.
I'm not against it, just unsure if I should with the cost.
>>33738447
You save money with almost every caliber. And you're making match grade ammo for less than the cost of plinking ammo.
The days of cheap surplus ammo are over. If you're gonna get into surplus and you actually want to shoot your guns and you aren't a richfag, you need to reload.
>>33738447
If you plan on buying one rifle that you shoot maybe once a year, then no.
If you want more, or plan on shooting a lot, it's invaluable.
Cheap milsurp is long gone
>>33738505
Different fag here, I just won a K31 that comes with a reloading die. I don't have any reloading gear, so I'm considering actually getting started. On the other hand I doubt I'll shoot my milsurp that much so...
>>33727373
Only image I have on my phone at the moment. 1968 production.
>>33736918
are they bad like putting rounds in is too tight and they can't come out when you try to charge your rifle with them?
>>33738319
Grafs and Buffalo Arms have both. But if you don't reload you're not gonna be shooting much. PPU is the only maker of 8x56 and they only do it seasonally.
>>33738319
if you have the facilities for reloading like a workbench and are really crazy into shooting then yes get into reloading.
if you're into shooting occasionally and live in an apartment reloading won't be quite as worth it.
>>33738641
Okay since I don't know much about reloading, do you know a good place to learn? What to buy, where to buy it, how to do it, etc?
>>33738659
Hickok and Iraqveteran8888 both have good YouTube videos on the subject. For reading material, the ABCs of Reloading and Modern Reloading (2nd Edition) are great. The RCBS Rock Chucker kit is a great starter, I still use most of the stuff I got in it to this day.
>>33728759
Welcome, fellow Israeli-Mauser bro. These things have essentially no recoil in .308, its incredible.
>>33738557
Since 7.5 Swiss shoots a .308 bullet, you can reload it for pretty cheap. There's plenty of GP11 out right now for a reasonable price so you can get away with shooting it for about 60 cents per round right now.
>>33738659
Lee kit on Amazon is cheap and has almost everything you need to get started.
Get a reloading manual.

So I recently got a second SVT. It's got no import mark, no Finn mark, non-refurb. The weird thing is, it's got two serial numbers on the receiver. Is that common?

>>33739814

>>33739814
I think on the Vetterli for sure. They're neat mechanical pieces.
Turkish Mauser maybe; you don't see the ATF-marked ones that often, but IMO that's about what it's worth unless it had matching numbers.
>>33738632
Yup thats the problem. Same issue as last thread, theyre marked gm1, i was sort of hoping i could just file away at them till it works. Doesnt matter if they get ruined since they dont work.
>>33740055
you could try light filing and then using something like wd-40 to lubricate the clips and see if the bullets make it through.
is it the back of the clip grinding on the rim causing problems or the edge of the clip with the middle of the bullet causing the issues?
>>33740134
Seems to be the lips are too tight, they mare up the brass a bit when putting them in or taking them out. Rims look fine but i cant say for certain theyre not getting caught

Even with originals the brass sometimes gets marred.
Get English or Australian chargers. Sarco has them.

provided the seller isnt dead, paypal is pretty convenient. normally you have to mail postal money orders which takes awhile and costs extra.
but be patient, dude might be busy/out of town, sometimes it takes sellers ~2 days to get back after end of auction.
Picked up an Ishapore 7.62 Enfield for $180 from a private seller. No rust in sight and the bore is pristine. The previous owner cleaned the wood up to the point I would have to say its my prettiest looking milsurp. The fact that it can shoot 7.62 NATO (and possibly .308) is a major plus since I have other rifles in that caliber and I don't want the hassle of .303. The only problem is that he gave it to a family member who added a Tasco scope, which involved drilling into the receiver.
I don't mind that a scope was added, since its just an Indian rifle from the 60's. I actually consider it a plus because its the only scoped rifle I currently own.
How much would such a rifle be worth?
>sorry, no pictures at the moment.

>>33742601
those arnt really "bubba'd" though. Its a professional conversion. For example, some of the Gibbs made up rifles (jungle carbines, 03 snipers, the 45/70 No4 posted above) sell for several hundred dollars.
'tanker' webleys that were professionally cut down by importers sell for about the same as their unfucked contemporaries.
but 'bubba' sporters are always $200 and below.

>>33744274
I wish I could find a nice one for $1000
Anyone have any idea what the finish on these looked like as issued?
>>33744274
Acetone wouldn't hurt anything. I routinely dunk mine in Kerosene to degrease the fuck out of them and remove superficial rust with bronze wool.
But to answer your question that is technically rust, but its been aged to the point of being inert. Some will call it patina. It won't hurt anything anymore. You can't scrub it away because its in a divot and the wool just glides over the edges of the pit. You could get one of those pointed wire wheels and possibly knock it out with some kroil to get under it if you really wanted to all uniform in color though.

I'd pay $1K for an SVT-40, but only after I pick up a few other guns. I share your hope that our current administration will reopen imports en masse though.
Possibly looking for a Luger next weekend at the funshow. Looking for a better condition shooter. Anything I should know about inspecting it? I know to look at numbers, and things like shallow or uneven markings for signs of refinishing, as well as the infamous chip.
Anything I should know to look for a reliable Luger? Stiffness of the springs? internal problems?

Theres always next time right? Brightside is i can buy something else now
>>33754333
Yup, always next time. I'm pretty sure the "winner" was either a alt account or another dealer, based on the odd price. So it might turn up again soon.
>>33754398
That was my thinking too. Il admit to getting in a few bidding wars but cant do it with the greyblanket
>>33753371
this may be a weird question but are you talking about when you fire it or when you're just fucking around with it at home, with my m95 the bolt is a lot easier to operate while the gun is shouldered
>>33754734
I have yet to fire it as I just got it. I have just been cycling the bolt because I like to do that with my milsurp.
I have tried shoulder and it's doable but hard. nearly impossible if I dry fire and try to cycle. I have to move it to a better angle to pull. Or I recock using the back part and pulling that to cock and then cycling which makes it far easier.
even without doing a dry fire cycling is quite difficult.
I did a take apart to get to the grooves and removed some rust from where the locking lugs are but it's difficult to get into. the bolt is clean with no rust.
also as an interesting side note: when I took apart the rifle and looked at the bottom where the barrel and receiver connect there is a giant fucking dent in the barrel like huge dent.
>>33754998
the bolt is clean with no rust.
actually scratch that I see bits of bright rust in some of the exterior of the bolt that go into the grooves of the rifle.
do I need to do a full take apart of the bolt to fix this fucker up?
>>33755038
L I T H I U M G R E A S E
>>33754998
it may just be a bad match and need some hand fitting. try going over it with a dry erase marker and then see where the ink gets rubbed off when you work da bolt. then touch up those spots with 1000-1200 grit sandpaper and see if that helps
>>33755038
if you're talking about the grooves on the bolt that may be the source of the problem. give them a good scrub with a brass brush and some solvent, then lube them up and put the bolt back together. there should be some guides about bolt disassembly/reassembly online
>>33755228
>>33755161
I have noticed that when I do the very initial pull to uncock it's quite difficult but once I get over that the bolt is quite smooth.
same with going to close it's where the cock on close part is happening is quite difficult.
>>33755322
>uncock
meant cycle. basically the beginning part of the cycle when I start to pull the bolt is very difficult and the end part of the cycle when I am finishing up closing is very difficult.
>>33755340
it sounds like the problem is in the bolt itself rather than the fit of the bolt to the rifle. give the grooves on the bolt a good cleaning and see if that changes anything
>>33755445
I did a full take apart of the bolt and did some cleaning using wd-40
I also took the bolt body and put it back in the receiver to see if it was any of the components on the bolt body not fitting with what's on the trigger control group. it was quite smooth overall if you ignore the little bump the bolt has to go over.
I assume this means either my cocking piece is fucked or my grooves for rotating the bolt are fucked?
Is it worth it to get swag the barrels on my milsurp? i know what the bore diameter should be but everywhere i read about it says they can vary by up to .03"
I can just take any piece of lead thats about the size of the bore and hammer it through right?

Rock Island Auctions is pretty good. They will fuck up their descriptions from time to time, but they won't get confused by an SMLE.
Keep an eye on their regional auctions, just have a scanned copy of your local LGS/FFL license to email them if you win - or send a printed copy with your check.

Ayyyy 1941 Maltby Mk 1/2 here. What's the serial number prefix? Mines F.
Took my No4 to a new 100m range fairly near by. First time I had shot it at that range, took few rounds to get the elevation adjusted for where I wanted to hold.
These were the last two groups of the day and the only ones that I measured, I was pretty pleased with it. I want to go back and see if I can get around 2" consistently, I'd be very happy with that; I think the rifle is capable of it from what I've seen at this range and other longer distances.
>>33758211
The final group of the day.
>>33758221
And this was tow 10 round groups + some sighting shots that I patched over. I wish I had measured the first of my 10 round groups because it looked about 2.5" and I would be damn pleased if that was a repeatable result. Unfortunately I was holding people up and my ruler was back at the bench so I had to just stick another target over it.

>>33760115
this is the gun:
http://www.gunbroker.com/item/639100933
marking is FG so 1951 maybe?
>>33760161
Lolno. That one was made in 1951. That rifle was also post-war rebuilt. Has some nice early parts on it, but other than that it's a typical refurb.
Pre-armistace rifles are F (almost none exist of this series), G, H, J, K, and L. The last 3 weren't completed when the armistice was signed; they were all being made at the same time as one another. When production was restarted in late 1944 they started again with the K, finished it then went onto L. Note: they never completed the J series.

Ones made before 1911 are much rarer, because use and attrition of Chinese rifles was tremendous, and they ramped up production significantly during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
