The only thing I can think of is that the bullet went in at an angle and didn't have enough energy to penetrate the back but did have enough energy to carry the box backwards several feet.

There's no way a squib could hit the exact spot I was aiming from 25 yards away.

This happened to me once with a 45. It penetrated the triple thick cardboard target, and ricocheted in a fashion that it came back through the back side of the target, stopped about half way through. As if it had been fired into the cardboard from the berm end of the range. Weird shit.
