Good afternoon /k/ommandos, I am starting this thread as a sort of companion to the Warsaw Pact threads that show up here from time to time. I've learned quite a bit from those threads and have accumulated rather large picture folders for the Combloc military forces of Eastern Europe, however I do not have corresponding folders for their counterparts. It appears there's a lot less media of NATO forces from the Cold War period, so I'm wondering if you guys have anything.

Going to start with some BAOR forces.

P.S.
While part of the Cold War, I would refrain from posting Vietnam stuff since we already have entire threads dedicated to that and we only get 150 images to a thread.

More Chieftain tanks. They have a bit of a mixed combat record since the one time they were used en masse in the Iran-Iraq War, they got screwed pretty badly fighting Iraqi T-55s and T-62s during the Battle of Dezful (pretty sure it was Dezful, might be wrong). Granted I attribute most of the Chieftain casualties to the atrocious Iranian battle strategy and shit terrain (plus the Iraqis were waiting in hull-down positions), but that still doesn't make for a great track record. Maybe with British crews and the updated later models things are different, but that's what we got for actual use.

>Were BAOR postings considered a good thing?

Broad question. There were plenty of guys who got them that loved it to bits, so much so that they ended up staying out there when they signed off. German wives, Audi 100, the whole lot. Others despised it, mainly those who weren't into the drinking and social side of things or wanted a combat tour. I did my stint in Germany as a Territorial, on a very unusual basis.

>How squared away was the British military at the point of your service?

Very. 1961 to 1968, man and boy. Virtually very SNCO when I joined had done at least one out of Malaya, Korea, Kenya, WW2 and many had done multiple. I went from one very competitive Regiment into another, so there was a wealth of experience. By the time I was in the TA, for a while in the 70s, a lot of this had gone away but there were still a lot of good heads.

>If the Cold War went hot, how fucked were you guys?

I remember a young officer's wife telling me, in full confidence, that they'd all be fine if nuclear war were to begin as we'd know about it well in advance - enough time to get all the women and children back to the UK and in shelters. She was about 20 years of age. I'd not the heart to tell her, and I understood why her husband spun her that one. We'd have been fucked. So would they, but that wouldn't have done us any good.

>Was there a shift in perception to the military after the Falklands?

Possibly. In my opinion, it came after Prince's Gate. That was the first time most of the Army had heard of the SAS, never mind the public. Falklands spurred it on.

I spoke to a former officer who said the Soviets had their old tanks deployed with the modern ones. They would have sent the old ones first because they literally had more tanks than we had ATMs. Modern second wave would be able to roll on.

Yes.

>I spoke to a former officer who said the Soviets had their old tanks deployed with the modern ones. They would have sent the old ones first because they literally had more tanks than we had ATMs. Modern second wave would be able to roll on.

Their doctrine wouldn't really match that. They had their premier units (catergorised A, for readiness and capability) tasked with providing the breakthrough at various points - HM Forces at the time were most concerned with preventing Warsaw Pact forces in the form of Polish Naval Infantry coming through Northern Germany with Soviet armour, aided by tactical nuclear weapons blowing holes in the lines. After they had gained the initiative, these 'A' divisions would press on to secondary objectives in the rear, with 'B' divisions holding the ground. 'C' were reservists, localised and only capable of meeting 'B' status - they were not equipped for breakthrough duties.

The main Soviet opponent to BAOR of the time was 3rd Shock Army. It's often erroneously written as 3rd Guards Shock Army. They had four divisions (Soviet measure), with about 20 supporting assets deployable at any level they saw fit. A serious force.
>>
>>33719114

I think they're akin to our National Guard and reserve units.

>>33719048
How much training did you do with other nations outside of NORTHAG? US? French?
>>
>>33719114
Territorial Army is what we now call the Army Reserve. They can be deployed alongside regulars, but I'll leave it to the man himself to explain the specifics.
>>
>>33719148
Yeah, I've heard vets talking about the 3rd Shock. I know the Americans did, but what was our position with tactical nuclear weapons?

Territorial is now known as Reserve, which I suppose is more accurate. US equivalent would be National Guard, in Europe perhaps militia or strategic reserve. I spent 7 years in the Regulars, then a few years on and off in the Territorials.

>Care to explain?
I was at the Joint Services Interrogation Wing, then spent a time on the staff at two NATO schools.

>What was your impression of the Bundeswehr during your time in Germany?
I didn't care for their discipline or their approach to man management, but I could appreciate the politics that led them to that state. On a tactical level they were well equipped, well led and had an enthusiasm in the job that seemed genuine. All that said, the limitation at the political level was apparent and obvious to even casual observers.

>What was your impression of other NATO armies?
Changed many times by instance and over the years. I always thought the Belgians were very good, all things considered. None were particularly terrible, aside from the Turks who oozed incompetence.

>How did you rate your chances against a Warsaw Pact land invasion?
I'll stress now that I wasn't an officer, so my understanding of broader strategy is limited to the academic stuff. If, for whatever reason, nuclear weapons hadn't been used then I don't think the WP would have reached Calais, despite their claims to the contrary. By 1980 I don't think they'd have reached Cologne.

With their aggressive WMD operations and tendency to commit in full to every task, however, if they had carried out their set piece perfectly then I think they'd have been in with a decent shot. Their bridging capability was particularly potent.

US military was the first foreign military I worked with, at the British Army's jungle warfare school in Johore. We also had an American exchange officer for Borneo, who was very good. Very, very good. We were training them at first, but they learned fast and put it to good use in Vietnam.

In Germany, the ones I interacted with were above my pay grade for the most part so I was only consulted on narrow, specific areas. They were still a pleasure to work with though. Perhaps I'm biased, as I moved to the States in the 80s, but I always liked working with the US Forces.

France weren't in the NATO command when I was around but again, a professional bunch. Far more secretive, however.

I don't know so I won't speculate, but I'm fairly sure that the Army's relationship with tactical nuclear weapons ended with the demise of the nuclear artillery program we had going. Google tells me it was called "Yellow Anvil", which is part of the Rainbow Code.

Here’s the USSR’s military strength 1989 as requested. It’s a biggie.

In 1989 defense spending was (in 2017 $) officially $241.59 Billion, but was probably about 30% higher ($313.59 Billion. This wasbetween 13-15% of Soviet GDP and around 30-40% of the USSR’s state budget

As for individual arms of service strength, the USSR had a massive standing force with an equally massive reserve pool. Officially, they could call up some 55 million registered reservists in 1989, though only about 5.6 million of these are considered to have been given any relevant recent training or have any equipment allotted to them

-x32 AMX-30 Tanks
-x56 VAB APCs
-x12 ERC-90 Scout Cars

These would have directly faced the Soviet 3rd Shock Army and 20th Guards Army with supporting air units, which consisted of:

-71,600 Troops including a ~1,000 strong Spetsnaz GRU unit
-2,068 Tanks (about 70% T-80s, the rest T-64s/T-72s)
-1,119 BMP IFVs
-336 BTR APCs
-134 BRDM-2 Scout cars
-9 BRDM-2 ATGM Vehicles
-24 2S1 122mm SPG’s
-336 2S3 152mm SPG’s
-36 D-30 122mm Howitzers
-12 T-12 100mm AT Guns
-144 BM-21 122mm MLRS

-62 Mi-2 & 74 Mi-8 Helicopters
-45 MiG-29 & 90 MiG-23 Fighters
-45 Su-22 Fighter-Bombers
-45 Su-25 Attack Fighters

Interestingly enough It's unlikely that East Germany would have taken part in a direct assault on West Berlin due to fears of soldiers discovering how much better it was. This fear by the Soviets would be alleviated in a general war in the rest of Western Europe due to mass nuclear saturation "negating" the differences in development. In West Berlin, the Soviets did not plan to nuke the city due to its proximity to the East German capital.

I doubt that would even factor in the individual E.German Volksturm's consideration. Your average Soviet peasant had no problems attacking through the developed part of Germany after all. Soldiers aren't really fighting for better living conditions, or anything material, but the state.

>he didn't know about hull down positions
underage pls go

Seriously though, a hide position should allow for several things. First, a hull down position, so you can fire at the enemy while having most of your tank behind cover. Second, a turret down position, so your commander standing in his cupola can peek up over the top while most of your tank is behind cover. Then you've got a hide position, where everything is behind cover. I'd post an image, but the image limit has been reached, so I'll just link two.

This illustrates what I described above visually.
