What are the upsides and downsides to carry handle mounted optics?

they only mounted them on carry handle because you couldnt remove the handle from the A2.

Easy to knock out of zero and mounted uncomfortably high.

Don't require modification to older rifles, don't interfere with the iron sights, and retro aesthetics.

Why

The only upside I can see is to be able to use a scope with a larger front sight. But it would be better to get get a low profile gas block or a flat top upper.

Only upside I've found is that it's easier to get a sight picture when using a gas mask, otherwise it's an inferior way to mount optics if you have a choice.

Slings are more useful in some situations, carry handles the other (you can always use both). Plus the aesthetic of course. You decide if the pros outway objective cons (added weight and height, less rail length, less iron sight options)

Train with a carrying handle and you'll notice some of the benefits, I'm just too lazy to list them off right now.

Because the sights till need to be reasonably elevated above the barrel. When mounting optic wasn't widely considered for all or almost all personnel, such as in the era of the A1 and A2, rigid sights were always a plus, so the rear sight wasn't going to be some fold down PoS, it was always going to be there. The rest of the carry handle doesn't add that much weight, gives the sight some extra protection, and, of course gives you another way to carry the rifle when in transport or loading/unloading weapons from shipment.

Anyone know of any good detachable carry handles on the market?

My sig 3x knockoff holds a zero fairly well. Downside is, they have quality control issues; my reticle is slightly off kilter. I only noticed because I read on a forum that some of them were, and now I can't unsee it. Very minute. For the $125 I paid for it I would buy it again.

You would want to look for a Colt 3x20 scope, the mount is built into the scope itself. To be fair there are a lot of clones of those scopes out there and most of them suck balls. Hakko built a lot of the Colt ones and you can occasionally snag one of those relatively cheap.
