So /k/, I'm a bit of a poorfag and decided to put a down payment on a Ruger SR1911.

What is some good advice for a newfag to the 1911 platform. Like ammo, mags etc.
>>
Should've spent a few more dollars for a Springfield TRP
>>
Wilson Combat, Chip McCormick or Tripp for mags.

>down payment

Can you get it back? If you don't have the cash to buy it outright you shouldn't buy it. It sounds like you're one shitty day from having to live behind a gas station.

>SR1911
Good entry level 1911. I've got one of the slightly higher end SR1911 Talo Exclusive models. It's a good gun and won't shit out on you. Enjoy some newfag tips with your new gun.

>Put tape near the end of the takedown lever on the frame when breaking the gun down. It'll help avoid an "Idiot Scratch."
>Most 1911's cannot shoot 45 super out of the box. You need a stiffer spring and maybe a recoil buffer.
>There are COUNTLESS grips for the 1911, so you can let everyone know how big of a man-meat connoisseur you are with your moldy labia grips if you want.
>Fucks sake don't overcharge your ammo and blow the gun up if you reload. It'll give tacticool more of a reason to bitch.
>1911 mags are piss easy to make so anything not "literally who" brand will work well.
>https://www.460rowland.com/ if you want to make it into a woods gun. 460 rowland is kinda meme-y, but it works.
>No, 8 or 9 rounds of .45 is not better or worse than 15 or 17 rounds 9mm. Caliber wars are dumb.
>Get a cuckstamp for a .45 suppressor and a threaded barrel. 45 acp is factory loaded subsonic and great for suppressing.
I had others but I forgot. Enjoy it.
>>
>>33710303
>said I am poorfag
>didn't say I was retarded

If I am dumb enough to wager rent on a pistol then I would kill myself. Some people don't have trust funds and like to spread payments out if they can.

Guess I should never buy a new car then.
>>
>>33710665
>Guess I should never buy a new car then.
You shouldn't when there's an assload of fine, working used cars out there that people regularly sell for a pittance.
>>
>>33710282
And then turned around and actually bought an Auto Ordnance

Not op, but what brand isn't shit for a sub $500 1911? I've been looking at Rock River for a range toy, haven't heard any negatives about their 1911's except for the proprietary sights. Pic not related.
>>
>>33710908
I can see someone buying that, and not because "I'm totally being ironic man".

The best answer I have is when I lived in NY, I had a buddy who was a trooper and he loved his rock island. Said he would use it as a service pistol if they would let him.
>>
Wilson combat magazines are the only ones I suggest using for carry or defense.

Stay away from steel case/jacketed ammo - all you're doing is wearing out parts.

Aside from that - you'll wanna fire about 200-250 rounds of hard ball through the gun to break it in and a couple mags worth of hollow points.
>>
>>33710200
I own one, I cleaned her up with some seal1 lube and she's been my baby ever since.

Currently on my 950th round on my next range trip. Love it to death.

Wasn't the TALOS version but I feel it was highly made even though I do have an idiot scratch due to my own stupidity. Leaving it there as a reminder for when or if I get a more higher end 1911 down the road, but my sr1911 has been put through hell.

The best entry level 1911 is the Springfield Mil-Spec.

Prove me wrong.

Got my SR1911 from cab el as for $600 because it was the display model. It was the nicest of the sub $700 1911. The Springfield loaded was just as nice of not a hair better build Wise, but not $200 better. I looked at a RIA, Remington, S&W, and Kimber. SR1911 was best of the bunch.

I have been thinking abou getting a Springfield milspec because it is so damn sexy. Hate those grips though. Would be perfect without the crossed cannons.
>>
>switched grips on RIA 1911
>grip screw bushing threads stripped

other than that my "GI" RIA 1911 is great
the trigger felt better than a Springfield Mil Spec
>>
>>33712018
They come with a second pair of black grips, but you can always buy some after market ones.

Most of the ~$500 1911's run well. I paid $198 for a heavily-used RIA 1911A1 GI and it's been dead-nuts reliable through close to 8k rounds, and even eats my 200gr lead SWC handloads with no issues. Sights are crude (it's a GI, all GI's have crude sights), accuracy is meh for a 1911 but runs on par with how I shoot striker guns (part of the reason it was so cheap is it'd been dropped on concrete and the crown is fucked). Seems to really like Chip McCormick Shooting Star mags above all else, including my WC's and Nighthawks.

>>33710200
Chip McCormick Powermags are shit. I don't care that they're cheap, don't buy them.
>>
>>33710303
You know it's not like buying shit from rent-a-center right? Paying on guns is extremely common and a great way to get a gun at a good price without having those sad stories where guys see a gun going for a song but they don't have the cash for whatever reason and it effectively works the same way as budgeting or putting money aside for hobbies
>>
>>33712067
I've had those bushings strip on $1200 1911's as well. I've even had aftermarket bushings from pretty much every major vendor strip. The ones for low profile grips are the worst about it.
>>
>>33710380
>Most 1911's cannot shoot 45 super out of the box. You need a stiffer spring and maybe a recoil buffer.
Flat bottom firing pin stop would help to slow down the cycling as well. It's one of those easily and unfortunately overlooked parts in .45 super or 10mm builds
>>
>>33711132
Yost disagrees.
It's more about finding what the gun likes and then finding out the shortcomings of that mag.
>>
>>33711893
Not anymore it isnt, not with that price/feature set
>>
>>33712167
You're the first person I've seen besides myself and one list of 10mms that's ever mentioned that gun on /k/ in almost a decade. Springfield had some cool shit back in the day, like the CZ clones and HKs
>>
>>33710665

Rude. I have a trust and I buy all kinds of fucking guns on layaway.

That pistol was on my "to buy" list a long time ago, among many others. It's pretty forgettable because it never really filled a niche that anyone wanted, but it's a strange thing that just happened in the 90's

There's a lot of cool shit that faded into obscurity in the last 30 years.

The one I got was a lemon, I sent it back to Ruger. Technician said that the complete slide and slide stop assembly was replaced.

After that I shot 200 rounds though it without stoppage, but I'm still not confident in it.

>making payments on a non-essential item

Enjoy being poor your entire life you fucking loser.
>>
>>33710665
>never buy a new car then.
You're dumb as fuck.

No, you should never borrow money you don't have to buy a new car.

The ONLY time you should finance is when you can afford it anyway, but take advantage of deals to get 0% finance, then the money makes interest in your investments until you gradually pay the car off...

You will never improve your station in life if you can't understand simple shit like that... you are, and always will be, a broke loser.

>>
>>33710200
>ammo
For carry, the absolute best is Winchester Ranger T, which expands to over 1". For practice, I buy whatever's cheapest. Usually remanufactured 230 grain FMJ from Freedom Munitions.

>mags
The absolute most reliable mag is the 7 round Checkmate with hybrid follower. The Colt hybrid is the same thing.

>etc
Don't change anything on it, until you've had multiple thousands of rounds under your belt. Learn what an idiot scratch is before you disassemble it, so you don't make one. Dry fire all you want, no need for snap caps. You can lube the hell out of it, but only put two drops of grease in the slide channels. If you have any problems early on first verify that it's not the magazine, then send it in for warranty. You can spend a fortune troubleshooting parts, best to just pay the shipping.

>>33711916
If it works, it works. But I've heard they are sometimes grossly out of spec, so it's a bit of a crapshoot. They're cheap enough I would take the chance.
>>
>>33711976
Im guessing you mean 180 dumbass. 360 he would go in same direction as he started

Wow. I have wondered all my life why no one ever thought to modernize the 1911 with a sig style locking lugs, linkless barrel, and decent extractor. I guess it has been done before, and people still wanted the old worse shit.
>>
>>33712950
zed, seriously fuck off. I'm so tired of seeing your trip and the pants-on-head retarded posts that follow it. kill yourself at the earliest convenience.

Oh no.
>>
>>33711132
This guy knows his stuff. Wilson Combat 47d, accept no substitutes.
>>
>>33712358
Will the ria 1911's accept standard mags and grips, or do the use proprietary?
>>
>>33713161
I can't speak to all models but the GI takes standard mags and grips. I've personally run 8 different brands of mags through mine.

Just be aware that if you want "thin" grips you will have to change the bushings (and all the quality ones come with them), just like on every other 1911 ever.
>>
>>33713180
The GI models are the ones I was looking at, most versions of them are under my $500 limit. I just don't want to buy a pistol that uses a bunch of parts unique to that particular manufacturer.
>>
>>33710200
Why do Rugerfags leave the sticker on their magazines? I once bought a P95 from a guy - he'd owned it for 10 years - and he still hadn't taken the stickers off the magazines. It's not like he hadn't used them. They were well used magazines. Are Rugerfags actually retarded?
>>
>>33713038
I mean, part of why 1911s are still popular is irrational fanaticism. I'm guilty of it, at least.
>>
>>33713232
The only thing proprietary is the rear sight dovetail. Some things will need fitting of course, but that goes for any 1911.
>>
>>33713280
Ask a SIGfag how important a sticker can be
>>
>>33713448
How important can a sticker be?
>>
>>33710200
its a good gun anon. Pick up a .45 super spring, and some .45 super, put a few rounds down range for fun.

I mean past that, any object you own can be a journey if you choose to make it one. New spring? New grips? New backstrop? Delete palm safety? All that can be done without a gunsmith. You want a decocker kit? Its out there.

its about you enjoying and experiencing your weapon the way you want to. All the "buy this its better or cheaper bullshit" Guess what, you got a Ruger SR1911 and its a fine gun.
