While lever guns can be an interesting edition to a collection, I'd buy a 10/22 before I'd think about a lever action.

If you already have a 10/22, the Henry H001 is a good buy with a good rep, but I'd drop a little more for a Winchester or something more collectable.
I also like the idea that levers can shoot shorts, longs and LR in case you run into a cheap stockpile of cheap shorts or longs. I bought a bag of about 400 very old .22 Longs for $3 at a garage sale, and only have had about one dud in 100 so far.

OP, the Henry is good to go and you can usually find them for less than 300 on Armslist. Henrys customer service is God-tier as well

So I was actually just looking for my first 22 plinker. While I can't imagine them being practical for much, I know there's no reason to be getting a repeater in 44mag or 45-70 unless you piss free boolets. Does a lever 22 come close to those larger calibers in terms of fun-ness?

Eh, both those calibers cost about what 5.56 goes for, give or take. 9mm seems to be the only centerfire cartridge that goes for noticeably cheaper than the intermediate rifle rounds. Outside of that you're definitely shooting 22 if you want to stay cheap.
