Is there any modern recording of what these things actually sounded like? I mean you hear the sound effect used on TV and Movies all the time for any plane descending but I've always wondered how authentic that sound actually was or if there were any surviving examples.

Still sounds like the same movie sound effect i've heard for years.

I'm curious if anybody has a modern recording of a preserved model.

Goodness me, that's bone-chilling. To think how crazy freaky scary it'd be to be on the ground and hearing that above you. That right there is terror and psychological warfare on a whole different level.

it's almost like the movie model is identically ripped from real fucking life

You would think one of these sirens would still exist,

Also, I would think these would be really fucking annoying for the crew of the aircraft. Being that any time you are flying they would be hearing them go off once you got to sufficient airspeed.

They only make a sound in a dive.

So i did some research, the sirens did annoy the crews in level flight, they are turbine driven, so unless they switchable brakes (later models did) on them they would be turning all the time as long as they had air flowing over them.

After 1941, the sirens were not used because they also affected the airspeed of the plane.
