Russian bombers flying over alaska

Two Anchorage-based fighter jets intercepted a pair of Russian bombers Monday night off Kodiak Island in what an Air Force commander called the first such flight seen near Alaska in nearly two years.

https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/military/2017/04/18/air-force-fighters-scramble-from-anchorage-to-intercept-russian-bombers/

This whole incident really seems like they are testing our response time... But i'm not as informed as some of you are; What do you think?
>>
Bears have been doing this for literally 50+ years now, not just with us, but quite literally any Western Country with an airforce ranging from Norway to Japan

Is this a slight rise in tensions? Yeah a little bit, but since this has been happening since the days of the F-86, its nothing surprising

The Soviets used to send flights near our airspace pretty much from the moment the Tu-95 was in service. It was a good way to gauge our response time and keep everyone on their toes. Carrier groups nearly always had 'fishing trawlers' hanging around like cleaner fish and if one got within several hundred miles of anything the Soviets were fond of you would see a military vessel come bumbling out and become your friend. Major Navy installations usually had to chase those same 'trawlers' off on a regular basis and it was sort of a game between everyone.

My father served on the USS Vreeland in the 1970's and he has a handful of pictures of when the Soviet cruiser Zhdanov was so close the captain sent a motor launch over with some random shit like magazines and lighters as a sign of goodwill and to possibly make the Zhdanov quit being such a nosy shit. So these modern Tu-95 flights are just a continuation of the Russians being their usual selves.
>>
>>33705195
By the way, aren't those airplanes horribly obsolete by now?
>>
>>33705509
I mean, you could say the same about the B52. The plane is ancient but it's still full of stand off weapons.
>>
>>33705509
Not by russian standard
>>
>>33705509
Not really, its a long range missile and ELINT/ASW (as the Tu-142) platform.
If you assume that role is necessary, then its not obsolete.
As a side note the Tu-95/142s Russia still has are relatively new air frames, all built from the mid 1980s until the early 1990s.
>>
>>33705509

No, I mean, like - I know the airframe design can be 60 years old and it's ok, because laws of physics are the same, and all the difference is in avionics, materials, electronics, armament etc.

But Tu-95 - that flying scrap uses goddamn propellers!

I mean, just compare the stats of Tu-95 and B-52.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_B-52_Stratofortress
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tupolev_Tu-95

Fuck, I put them together for ease of eyeballing.

So it can fly 6,000km+, launch 8-16 missiles, then fly back?
It can accomplish the mission it is in service for, so how can it be obsolete?

With what? The Russians don't know ahead of time whether the Americans are sending an F-15 or an F-22 up there. Besides, both of the F-22s pictured are carrying drop tanks anyway
>>
>>33705484
There are some pretty good Bear stories.

My favorite is the one about NATO pilots constantly speeding up and slowing down while escorting Bears, so that the political commissar inside would constantly have to crawl back and forth through the bomb bay tunnel to keep them in sight and stop the Russian crews from being too friendly.

Another good one was when a Lighting was escorting a Bear and lost track of his tanker, and right when he was getting ready to divert to Greenland the Bear radioed him with directions and then said something like "Good luck, English MIG"

Tu-95 doesn't have a tunnel between the cockpit and tail position, he must of teleported.
>>
>>33705195
Yeah, they are just probing us. We used to mutually do that to each other non-stop in the Cold war and the way the world is again you might as well say we are in a second one.
>>
>>33705912
I herd the same story, I think there's a ridiculously uncomfortable maintenance tunnel that you can crawl through if I remember correctly.
>>
>>33705925
There isn't, the cross section of the aircraft (actually the same as the aircraft its built upon, the B-29) is taken up entirely by the bomb bay.
Its just a dumb cold war story. Especially considering their was one political officer per regiment, he would of been pretty busy.
>>
>>33705936

But the B-29 has a crew tunnel.

https://www.google.com/search?q=b-29+crew+tunnel&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiCuLjZ37LTAhVpsFQKHdwRC1gQ_AUIBigB&biw=1280&bih=953
>>
>>33705955
And the Tu-95 has a much larger bomb bay. Try fitting a rotary launcher of Kh-55s in a B-29.

Do these things even have counter measures? just park a sub in the islands, wait for fat fuck to fly over, shoot their ass down

launch fighters "late" , all sattelite data would show is the us planes way too far away for attack and they;d have to sum it up to mechanical failure, the debris would probably float to US waters so they could doctor that shit up or keep the missle impacted sections

end this shit it's gone on too long

In this thread the Tu-95 is just fine because its been upgraded and its weapons are new.

But im another thread, the US Minuteman missile is a ancient POS because its old despite having been upgraded over and over.

Nigga, do you even a long range cruise missile carrier? The flybys Russians do off the coasts of Alaska and California are just routine patrols. Were they real combat missions by the time they usually meet the escorts your airfields would have been burning brighter than the centre of the sun while the Bears would have been on their way back.
>>
>>33715629
Could have a thing or two with the Bears' airframes being about 10 years younger than the Minuteman missiles and the fact that they are not piss obsolete underpreforming solid fuelled ICBMs that are barely kept operational by cannibalizing Peacekeeper missiles. That and the fact that Russians do have newer missile carriers in their service, while Minuteman is the only American ICBM and will likely remain so for quite some time.

If you mean obsolete because of changes in doctrines: Provided that you have the air superiority any plane that carries a lot of bombs is useful still, and they do use long range bombers from Russia to engage targets in Syria as far as I know.

If you mean technologically: Upgrading electronics is not that hard and I'm pretty sure they've undergone a lot of upgrades already. Airframes must be old but they fly, they fly high and if there happens an engagement others won't be able to do anything bear cannot do.

Also why would they send their best for messing with other countries?

Tu-95MS are not carrying and have never carried any bombs, ever. IIRC the last remaining Tu-95 that carried bombs were converted into training aircraft in early 80s.
>Upgrading electronics is not that hard and I'm pretty sure they've undergone a lot of upgrades already
Mainly engine and navigation upgrades. There's not much you can improve on a missile truck.

Airframes are about as old as B-1B.

They do routine patrols with Tu-22M3 and Tu-160 as well.

They're not fighters either, the missiles they carry are used for strategical bombing anyway.

>>33718081
This is not what was implied with "Provided that you have the air superiority any plane that carries a lot of bombs is useful still". A missile truck armed with 5000 km range cruise missiles neither gives a fuck about air superiority nor carries a lot of bombs.
