Question for you Mauser guys out there.
I have a sporterized Mauser very close to the one in the photo, but not exactly that. I was wondering if I found an original either k98 or M48 stock, could I drop the receive into one and have it work? Would the bolt length differences between the M48 and k98 present a problem if I were to try this?
>>
>>33704996
If it's already sporterized than I would just leave it as is. Probably too far gone to ever be in it's original configuration.
>>
>>33705038
Nothing else really seems off about it. I just think that short front end just looks so...not what I think of when I hear the word Mauser? I enjoy the gun right now, but I'd like to turn it into something I would really enjoy
>>
>>33705038
No.
It's hard to tell without looking at it up close, but unless the barrel has been chopped, it's likely that it can be restored.
>>
>>33705075
I can say with a degree of confidence that the barrel has not been altered to any degree.
But I'm of course no expert, so is there any way to tell for sure?
>>
>>33704996

measure the barrel and check if it matches what a standard barrel length was for a k98.

should be something like 25 inches. if it matches the barrel length then you should be golden. Unless they did some weird fuckery with the receiver/bolt.
>>
>>33705055
>>33705075
Post pics of the actual rifle.
Does it still have the front sight post?
>>
Will post pics in a few. Bear with me shitty lighting and camera
>>
>>33704996
If the front and rear sights are intact you shouldn't have any major issues.

Nothing wrong with a nice sport stocked mauser, hard to get a finer hunting rifle for the price.
>>
>>33705217
I dont do much in the way of hunting. And even if I did, this wouldn't be my gun of choice to do so out of my available options. I'm looking to make this more of a collection piece. Still shoot it at paper, lots of fun. But I just want it just a bit more original
>>
>>33704996
Remember to find a complete stock set with handguard for the appropriate model of rifle if you decided to return it to it's military furniture. The little bits and pieces will absolutely kill you otherwise, alternatively you could look into getting a Mannlicher stock. That would give you the longer forend you want and it would be a viable option if the rifle has been permanently altered.

Here are some pictures. Sorry for shit lighting and camera quality, it's the best I can do as of this moment. But I measured from the end of the barrel to the...start of the receiver? Action? Not too well versed in all the parts yet, so please correct me if I'm wrong. Threw in a standard 30 round pmag for something like a size comparison.

Depending on the quality of the stock and conversion they can be worth more in current condition.

Pictures will determine what can be done.

It does have "mod 98" stamped on the receiver, I'm sure that helps quite a bit.
>>
>>33705269

>barrel length roughly 23.5-23.62

looks good for a standard karabiner 98k stock.
>>
>>33705281
>>33705298
Yeah, you're fine. Just get a K98k stock, front sight hood and some shim stock or glass bedding compound and you'll be good to go.

Will be a fun project. Try and get some close ups of the markings, put it under a lamp for better light.
>>
>>33705358
I understood the stock and sight hood part, whats up with the shim stock/ glass bedding? I'm not familiar with this sort of process or anything.

As for the markings, I'll try but my camera is a quiet terrible.
>>
What's the code on the very top, almost "cylinder" looking part of the receiver, OP?

I can give you more information.
>>
>>33705397
Code? Well, on the very top of the receiver, it says
"dou" and below that has "44"

A little father up, in between that and the rear sight, on the left side it's marked "2882"
>>
>>33705413

>DOU 44

you have a waffen-werke receiver made in 1944.
>>
>>33705380
Well each stock was fitted to each gun, a mismatched stock can often not fit correctly and will need shimming or in extreme cases bedding compound built up so the stock fits nice and tight.

You might get lucky and it fits like a dream, but be prepared to put some work into it if that isn't the case.

Stocks can be pretty cheap. I've done this to two sporterized Mausers with great results. I'll give you some tips.

>>

it was made in Slovakia if you give any fucks about that.

if you're bored and have time you can take the stock off the barrel and look for any markings there to see where it was made and if it matches.

First off, you'll be wanting a near late war stock. Toward the end, the factories began cutting small corners and conserving materials. It looks like your factory in '44 was keeping bayonet lugs on but had began using stamped & welded barrel bands.

>pic related

OP, go on this forum and save all of the images. This guy has a vet-bring back "dou. 44" kar98k in pristine condition.

http://www.warrelics.eu/forum/world-firearms/vet-bring-back-k98-dou-44-pictures-333215-2/

Bring backs are much more valuable than Russian captures because the Russians mixed & matched parts. An all matching Kar98k can go for a pretty penny.

They're also a great example of what your rifle used to look like.
>>
>>33705438
Also, you seem to know a thing or two about these rifles. What would be the standard bullet I'd run through one of these? Grain wise and what not. Not really looking for any match grade stuff, just an okay performer for target shooting.

Looking to actually try to get some okay groupings with this thing and in my experience, the sights are a little difficult to pin down, gotta really press my cheek into this thing to get a good sight picture. So I want to make sure I'm eliminating as many variables as possible before I squeeze that trigger.

>>33705460
I mean. Slovakia's cool, should there be any reasoning to be the slightest bit more happy or concerned that it was Slovakian produced? If not, still cool to know none the less.
>>
>>33705470
>should there be any reasoning to be the slightest bit more happy or concerned that it was Slovakian produced

nah be happy that you have a rifle made and possibly used during ww2. and take good care of it.

Good! You still have your marking intact. If your parts are all matching, this might be a bring back.

If not, you just got lucky and Sergie forgot/was too drunk to take his hammer and peen off the waffenamts/swastikas.

My 1940 J&P Sauer & Sohn has all of the markings and is all matching except for the stock, safety switch and the magazine plate.

I have a very late war stock on mine. I'd like to think the original was cracked in glorious combat but...it was probably gangbanged by Vlad and whatever poor bastards had to put these parts together.
>>
>>33705488
>nah be happy that you have a rifle made and possibly used during ww2

Huh, so, would it be worth it to try to restore it to what it once was? Personally to me it would, but, should I?
>>
>>33705493
The 2882 marking on the side is the same as on the bottom of the magazine. And on the magazine and the bit of metal in front of it both share the marking "LU"

The bolt handle and top of the bolt both share "9585" and the safety switch has "55" on it

Is there anywhere else I should be looking for markings?
>>
>>33705499
If it's worth it to you then you should bring it back to something resembling it's as issued state. You won't hurt anything by doing that because your rifle appears to be unaltered and simply replacing furniture is a simple process.

Yeah man, standard 8mm Mauser. I use the "Prvi Partisan" or something like that stuff off Midway or whatever website has it cheap.

Beware though, treat all of it like corrosive ammo and clean ASAP. Also, always bring a cleaning rod with you when shooting steel 8mm Mauser. The cases can expand sometimes and will lock up your bolt. I've had it lock up like crazy twice and one time I had to take the rod and carefully run it through the front of the barrel to extract the casing which had expanded in the receiver.

All steel cased bullets do this, but especially the bigger rounds like .308, 30-06, etc. Nothing to worry about.

Also, stick to 196 grain. I've had the best luck with it.
If you own a rifle in 30-06 and like to reload, save your casings. There's a small tool you can buy that shaves just enough off a 30-06 round to make it 8mm compatible. The rounds are literally identical in shape/size besides the neck. I have 180+ brass reloaded former 30-06 rounds that I use for hunting. Came free with the Mauser.
Finally, you're doing great! I never bought one, but get a Limb-Saver if you're shooting it more than 50 rounds. I'm an avid shooter and it still bruised me the first two times. Or just be like me and have a couple beers before/don't be a poon.

>here's an image of your typical Russian refurbishment center for captured Mausers
>>
http://www.gunbroker.com/item/638959417

Just found this, and I know it says that it could work for a late model dou 44 but I just want a second opinion and what not. Seems about right.
>>
>>33705546
And yeah, do a bit of reloading and the 8mm I had had those press fit primers or something? Practically impossible to get out to reload, so those were no good. Have a shit load of 30-06 so that tool sounds handy. Just shave off a bit and its 8mm compatible?
>>
>>33705512

Yep, you got yourself a filthy Russian captured whore. She probably had all of her holes plugged good before she was locked away, still dripping cosmoline. Don't worry, most of us do.

As a plus side, she definitely saw combat on the Eastern front.
Anyways, nearly every part should have a serial. The Krauts loved their serials and the Kar98k is no exception.

When you take apart your gun, look at the bottom of the barrel. There's usually 2-3 serials that are covered by the stock. On original stocks, the serials are near where the barrel rests inside. This was done to protect it.
>>
>>33705567

Nice! I don't reload much so I can't tell you about primers. But I did look into resizing 30-06 to 8mms Mauser.

Here's the die you need to do it:

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/770975/rcbs-trim-and-form-die-8x57mm-mauser-8mm-mauser-from-30-06-springfield

There are a ton of YouTube tutorials on how to do it, they can explain it better. Just look up "Resizing .30-06 to 8mm Mauser".

Will do! I'll also post updated threads detailing any significant progress regarding this project in the future.
But I have to ask, is there some way I may contact you in private? I have a thing or two I'd like to speak about privately regarding this project.
A secondary skype account or email or anything would do.

Hey all, I am in a similar situation as OP, but opposite. I have a really nice 03a3 stock and a bucket of sights, stock rings and random metal bits (grandpa was a garage gunsmith and sportered many Springfields). The gun that belongs in the stock was stolen many years ago but it was in a sporter stock, the thief left the OG stock behind. I want to have a good 03a3 out of this. Is it better to build a new gun or throw in an uncut sporter? How do I tell whether it's a smith corona or a Remington using just the stock?
Here's a doggo for your troubles.
>>
>>33707870
What this guy said.
>>
>>33705573
OP here, I have the gun disassemble right now just looking over it. Anywhere in particular I should be looking for markings? There are a few more of the small eagle stampings along the barrel that was hidden by the stock and a few other letters and numbers and what not.
