I would go with the Mesa.

It's not a huge difference, but I think pistol grip gives you a little more control over the gun when reloading and other manipulations.

Hogue makes good products, but the tackiness can work against you a little, as the rubber texture sometimes clings to clothes, and I find that to be annoying when it drags and binds on your shirt (I have had a few rifle2 with a hogue stock).

I put a Knoxx recoil dampening on an 870, and while I think it looks like shit, it does a good job. I added their stock mounted side saddle, but it was clunky, and handling suffered.

I doubt he's using an 870 for trap and Shotguns don't get near as much range time as rifles.
For how much they are shot I would much rather have more recoil with less muzzle rise and a compact/ adjustable stock
