if a gun store is relying on firearms and ammo sales to stay in business they are basically dead already. either run a small (and I mean small) FFL operation with some interesting/unconventional inventory or get a big space and let the range fuel business.

how about a "decompression" room near the range? just a little air conditioned room with some chairs, a watercooler, and like a few bags of chips to go to when you need a break from shooting. it would be really nice when you have multiple people shooting. when my father and I shoot I always feel bad walking back into the store because I just need to not be on the range and a little autist-room would be kinda nice

I was thinking about opening a super-upscale gun store in Beverly Hills, something similar to the Holland and Holland stores in NY and London. My version would also carry some high-end "tactical" stuff to cater to the Lambo owners and Blizerian types of the world, and I was thinking that maybe a cool feature would be to do some on-site manufacturing and set the shop up with windows so visitors can see the CNC machines and stuff in action.

Cheaper used firearms. Old, or brutally used, ghetto, Hi-Point, single shot shotguns, old military surplus, etc. Buy in bulk from auctions. Sell these on little to no profit.

Now the trick is 1 per customers per month. Why this? Cause 1 fucker can come in and get the whole batch. That is no good. You want the customer traffic. You want them coming back month after month. Of course you have new and accessories but this keeps customers flowing in and name being mentioned to others.

This is from a customer and owner standpoint. You need something to get them to come in month after month.

But I get his point. Most of this shit is "what would make a place awesome", almost none of it is "what would make a place profitable". Prices that compete with online prices? Barely coming out even on that one. Then there are so many other ideas that are not profitable in any way.

Unpopular opinion time: Cool down the false patriotism and plastering the 2A everywhere.
Make a gunstore less like a political statement, I think this scares off potential newguns because it immediately screams redneck to the uninitiated.
>>
>>33702386
That's true for traditional guns, I was thinking of having the "visible" part be the boutique tactical side, for a few reasons. One is that traditional manufacture requires way too much space and staff to cram into the back of an expensive Beverly Hills location, and another is that CNC is flashy and impressive to the uninitiated.

I was also thinking that you could offer a pretty damn cool service with just a CNC mill and a cerakote setup on site, where people could come in in the morning and spec out a gun with custom receiver markings, optional skeletonizing, color, etc., and it'd be done and ready for pickup by evening, with the option of watching the process happen if they really wanted to. I'd probably stock 80% receivers and then just do the finishing on them on-site.

An integral part of this whole idea would be developing and stocking parts to make CA-compliant rifles, too.

The original one in Orange Country is pretty amazing, though. People bring really incredible cars out, things you'd only expect to see in a museum. Everyone's going to shit on this idea but I think it could work:
>Dress code for all employees and customers
Similar to country club attire. No t-shirts, no camo, no jeans, no tasteless brand advertising. Business casual.

Keeps the thugs and the fudds out, and well-dressed clientele are more likely to make a purchase instead of get cheeto dust all over the walnut monte carlo stocks.

>>
Try and buy program would be nice, if there were an attached range. If you wanted to buy a firearm, the staff would provide you with a target and a magazine with up to 10 rounds for it for free. If you didn't like it, no problem. It's cheap and a good way to improve customer experiences.

There would probably have to be some rule to prevent people from coming in, trying 10 guns, and leaving. Maybe if you try more than one in a day, you have to pay for ammo and cleaning unless you end up buying something.

Also, cheap FFL transfers. My LGS does $10 transfers and I always grab a box of ammo or an accessory when I pick stuff up. It's great for building customer loyalty and getting good reviews.

And have an online store. Either an up to date physical inventory or a listing of guns in a warehouse. Preferably both. I know a lot of stores have pooled resources to buy a large stock in my area, and you can shop that through any of them. It means the owner can have a huge selection, but a relatively small physical inventory.

not pants on head retarded prices and a decent variety of new and some surplus. Went to one that I haven't been to in a while because the were shit before but I figured why not since they got a new building. $600 glocks everywhere, 25 dollar tapco and promag ak mags. I saw a huge "deal" they had, it was a rear end converted saiga 74, with 17 mags which looked like a mixture of tapcos, and 4k rounds of ammo, which looked like a tin of 7n6 and the rest was wolf 545. They wanted 3300 for it. I remembered why I stopped checking out that store back during sandy hook. They were selling bushmasters for 1900 then. a place called blue steel in raytown, MO
>>
>>33702449
That is fucking awesome.
Unfortunately for me I'm in Cucked Canuckistan and not glorious merricuh.

However, my ideal gun shop wouldn't be just a gun shop. It'd be an all-in-one men's hangout. One place for a gun store, with the newest stuff out on display, and guns organized by timeframe and nation. Slavshit in one area, WWI and WWII stuff in another area, tacticool shit in another, futuristic stuff in another, so on and so forth.
A soundproofed firing range would be a must as well, with a try-before-you-buy kind of thing if your background checks come out clean and your licensees are in order.
Another section for a small workshop where you can learn how various firearms work, maybe even a first-come-first-served sort of thing where you can prototype your own firearms. Definitely would have to have a 3D printer and/or CNC station for custom parts.
Another section would be a lounge area with a small pub-like area and some nice vinyl/leather couches and wood tables.
Yet another section would be for clothing. Not just range vests and shit but a tailor as well.
Yet another area would be a general sort of hang-out/arcade kind of area with pinball machines, pool tables, and arcade cabinets running on points cards.
Possibly also a garage area to store and work on vehicles. Would be nice to have a place to keep a motorcycle in the winter.

Just overall a nice place to meet up with a few of the guys(and non-cunty gals) to do whatever the fuck you feel like.

buy a golf course based country club. convert the golf course, tennis courts, etc to gun ranges. Keep the pool, spa, sauna, steam room, hot tubs, club house stuff.

>park at the main club house. load your firearms, ammo, and paraphernalia into a golf cart. drive it to the range you want to use.
>then put your golf cart into a secure cage with the guns. go into the club house for a meal, drinks, or other amenities.

>try and buy

I've seen gun stores that will give you a free box of ammo and a rental lane with a purchase. But the key phrase is with a purchase. I'd really like to be able to try a weapon with just the expectation I will probably be buying it than a confirmed payment.

Honestly, even if it costs money up front, you'll still make up the profit and then some if it also generates customer loyalty and good reviews.
>>
>>33702922
Most ranges have rentals. What sort of gun are you trying that you can't rent? Other than older stuff which I wouldn't trust with any asshole to fire.
>>
>>33702894
of course, but there should be some form of way to ward them off before they get to the door, you know?
and I don't necessarily mean welfare americans but just people we don't want in a gunstore in general.
>>33702922
i'd love this system
>hey can I see X
>sure
>get to teetering point of purchase
>ask if you can try it out
>get a box or amount of ammo equivalent to 2 full magazines
>go through all the other buying a lane shit, plus normal gun rental fee
>this way the store makes profit
>if you purchase the firearm, the cost of rental is refunded or deducted from the purchase
off the top of my head I can tell you I would've bought at least another 5 guns if this was a thing
minor thing
>designated target on the wall to aim at when fondling and looking down the sights
i hate having to try to find a spot on the wall where i'm not flagging someone when i'm checking sights. a designated target (or targets, depending on size) on the wall for this that nobody was to stand in front of would be great

>sure
>get to teetering point of purchase
>ask if you can try it out
>get a box or amount of ammo equivalent to 2 full magazines
>go through all the other buying a lane shit, plus normal gun rental fee
>this way the store makes profit
>except you jam the gun, or scratch it, or something.
>Decide you don't like it and don't buy.
>Other customer doesn't want gun out of box with a scratch on it.
>>
>>33702902
I think for a gun store, something better than a dress code for customers is to make sure the actual store is always nice. shit is on racks nice, the employees carry themselves well, it's not always dirty, etc.
here's why
>makes customers feel more special because it's "fancy"
>makes you more comfortable that the place is reputable
>makes you want to actually clean yourself up for range visits
>keeps out welfare americans of all types who don't like any of those qualities
>boosts employee morale that they aren't working in a shithole
>makes firearms and the gun industry look better and more professional
>>
>>33702922
>try gun
>i dont like it, no thanks
>gun store now has used gun they have to sell
>>
>>33703005
I've had this idea that somewhat relates to this, since furfags spend ungodly amounts of money

>Take the Build-a-bare-arms idea
>Add shop made lowers with just a s/n
>Pay extra to get a custom laser rollmark
>I would totally pay extra dosh for a unique rollmark just because it would be cool
>>
>>33703011
Well, there's a solution. Have examples of the different firearms set aside for people to try out. That way they can try out the beater version instead of fucking up the primo version.
>>
>>33703093
So...rentals? They have this already.
>>
>>33702938
Generally there are rentals, but not always the right models. Selection varies. If a rental is available, great. Provide it for free. If not, use the gun the customer is considering buying.

>>33702965
That would work. I'd probably say at least provide the ammo at cost and eliminate the range fee. Maybe ammo cost plus five to ten dollars for cleaning. But you're not trying to make profit on the range time, but on future sales.

Oh, and definitely on having a posted target for aiming. I generally ask the store owner where works, but that's annoying.

>>33703005
I'd go in and ask to buy a hunting license for whatever animal they're dressed as
>>
>>33703038
>Be me
>Buy CZ-75
>Comes with target from factory
>Gun had been fired to prove accuracy
Nope, gun's been used. I don't want it
>>
>>33702673
No thanks.
When I go go shooting I dress comfy. One because the clothes have better mobility but also, I care less if they get dirty.
I also occasionally drop by gun stores just to check out what's in stock. If I had to dress up every time I had to go to a gun store I'd just never go.
>>
>>33703111
>Provide it for free. If not, use the gun the customer is considering buying.
>go to gun range
>try out guns for free all fucking day
>buy nothing and leave
itd be great to try before you buy but lets be realistic, this is just a bad idea.
also consider the time it takes for an employee to supervise someone trying out a gun, which you would have to do bc they didnt rent it or buy it.

Carry parts kits, and NOT just AR parts.

FAL kits, AK kits, SMG kits, etc.

Bins of shit to pick through (old furniture bolts triggers and sights and mags and the likes)
I agree with the no more than four ARs on the rack at any time

I'm not saying only four in store but the rack guns are just examples, not the actual gun you get (at least with ARs)

I also like the hibachi AR idea.
Perhaps we have a restaurant attached?
We could call it "guns while you wait" or something like that.
We could even have a glass wall so you can watch the AR get assembled.

I wish we could do this with AKs but they kinda take a lot longer to build due to headspacing and drilling the shit for the rivets being a pain in the ass.

We also ought to have an entire section of the store dedicated to guns that are older than sixty, organized by military surplus and Civillian.

We could even group country of origin together as a method of Organisation.
And better yet, we could make the rack include the ammo underneath (we strategically place 6.5 swede with the 6.5 swede guns for instance, and have a rack or 8mm Mauser next to all the guns in 8mm Mauser)

That would definitely help ammo sales.

Perhaps we could also have people specifically dedicated to historical armaments that are dressed for the period?
It's a bit much but this is (currently) hypothetical.

It would have a couch area as well for people to wait on transfers and the phone calls in.

And as always, an excellent catalogue of new stuff.

Anything modern would have the ammo in the usual isles, not next to the gun.

Basically, you'd end up ventilated before you could get the mag loaded, and that's only if you even got that far without having someone help you pick the right gun (and make sure you don't do something stupid)

There's an indoor range not 2 miles from my apartment that has a full store, bar, and restaurant. They have date night specials where you get a steak dinner, 2 drinks apiece, a range rental for both of you, and an hour of range time for 75 bucks. When the lady and I don't feel like going out to Dad's house 2 hours just to shoot that's usually what we do. It's a good time and it's usually cheaper than just going out to dinner.

I'd have the murder/violent assault/robbery/home invasion criminal stats for the previous year on display. As well as a few short clips of video of instances where criminals don't just take your wallet but beat or shoot you to death.

People need to be reminded we do not live in this perfectly safe little hug box and just how insanely quickly things can go from normal to nightmare.

I don't advocate scaring people but once educated you would be insane not to own a firearm.

>>33701137
Sometimes one gun store is partitioned from two stores, so one side is ammo while the other is FFL/showroom. It is cheaper to just have it actual retail then a buy back/surplus hybrid.

>>33705424
>somehow it's still open
Retail here. Liberals will do anything to get something they never had access to, including going in a store with items marked up in price just because they don't go to the other franchise outlet further away their commute with lower prices. But what professional seriously shops during their work "Lunch" anyway?
>>
>>33702543
>>33702586
Why not have a membership fee like Costco? They sell a lot of things wholesale and at cost, with low margins and high volume. Sell ammonin bulk at competitive pricing but above cost slightly, but the bonus for customers is they don't need to pay shipping.

Biggest problem I foresee is people counterfeiting whatever info is collected for a firearm sale, thus allowing felons to both get firearms and commit identity theft. There should be a set of eyes with training on this type of sale.

As someone who manages a retail store I can tell you unless there's quantity that's not going to happen. The guy who has one or two employees selling to the entire united states directly out of his warehouse is going to be able to do it for cheaper than the guy who has 4 or 5 employees to be open to just a couple of close by towns. A penny a round times 1,000,000 will pay the bills but not times 100,000.

Each displayed gun has a number assigned to the place.
That way, you can just say, "Let me see #19" instead of "Let me see that rifle. No, the one three to the right. I said THREE to the right."
