It's not a bad round. It's a damn good pistol round really, it just doesn't have a unique place between calibers as it doesn't have enough energy difference from 9mm to justify the recoil and capacity, without just going up to 10mm. I like .40, I just wouldn't recommend it to lady shooters or new shooters

.40 S&W has become such a joke for autistic /k/iddies that I actually took time look at the numbers and examine the history. The average round actually performs better than all by the top 20% of 9mms. I am so impressed that I have two 9mms but the next gun I get will be in that caliber. It isn't a bad round. I have three pistols in .40S&W and during a few ammo panics I liked the fact I could always find ammo. Would I buy another pistol chamber for it? Probably not.

On a related note, I have a CX4 in .40S&W and it is just fun to shoot. True, I don't have the capacity of the 9mm but at the range I don't really care. I do know you can kill a coyote with one.

It is a fun round that gets meme'd to death and is slowing becoming a niche. So be it.

To me it's a lot like the 10MM in that there's just no compelling reason to care all that much about it if you're already happy with .45/9MM.

I own a .40 just so if I want to switch the barrels I can have a 9mm or .357. The .357 use the .40 magazines and the 9mm are just additional mags and not a lot of weight. Not a lot to carry to get 3 types of ammunition out of 1 pistol.

I want a full size handgun to gunsling skinwalkers with. The G20SF has been calling my name but the expensive ammo is making me hesitant. Then again with a set of dies I could just use my dad's reloading bench as he's only a 15 minute drive away from me. The point of switching back to 9mm isnt that basic 9mm is actually better and the fbi had it wrong. Its that new designs and technology allow the 9mm to perform as well as 40 with all the advantages of 9mm.

kinds of handgun shooters:

1. Hole size doesn't matter. Hydrostatic shock is a myth. all combat caliber handguns offer adequate penetration with JHPs. Ergo i pick the cheapest, lowest recoil, highest capacity caliber: 9mm

.357 and .40 does recoil harder depending on ammunition bought. When ejecting brass it goes further than the 9mm of course. The issue is working in all 3 barrels is annoying but worth it.

Now I have a compact Glock gen4 that can use 3 different size magazines from the 9mm and .40 area. This gives me the most options in the field if I have to scavenge magazines or ammunition. I know my gun is oiled, cleaned and ready to go. I dont trust any other gun until I can check it out.
