My very liberal grandparents bought an 870 for Y2K and have never shot it in 17+ years of having it. Is it a good gun? Ammo is not a problem since there is at least 500 rounds.

Family wants to buy me a shotgun somewhere around $500 for my birthday. What are you favorites in that price range?
>>
>>33696670
Of course it's good. It would be good in 100 years just the same. Go enjoy your gun silly and buy some more guns
>>
>>33696769
Remington 870 wing master or police magnum, avoid 870 express. This is the one that I had for year and never ever any issues. Other anons with mossberg experience can probably say good things about those as well

If it's from 17 years ago then it should be from when Remington was still good, so yeah it should be just fine.

>>33696769
Mossberg 590A1 can be had for that and is a REALLY nice scattergat.
>>
>>33696769
My favorite shotgun in a Remington 1100, although it's from like 1970 when they were much better.

Nowadays, I'd think you'd be better off with Mossberg if you like the looks of them. If you want an over/under, I'd go with CZ (might be like ~$600, not sure).

The older 870s are where it's at. I inherited this old son of a whore when my neighbor passed away. She kept it next to her bed since she bought it in the 80s. She never shot it and had a couple hundred rounds sitting around that I got to blast through. The 870 is a great shotgun in my opinion.
>>
>>33696670
Yea, 870s are still the king of pump-shotguns.
>>
>>33698470
What a fucking pussy.
>>
>>33696814

and bad things.

I love mossbergs, they're less prone to malfunction than rems, but if you drop them just right the feeding ramp pops out.

and the mavericks are impossible to repair if you break the trigger assembly.

I'm going to get a semiauto next, but a cheapie. probably an ATI.
>>
>>33696769
I really like my Benelli Nova. They start at like $450. I can't say enough about my early 80s 870 wingmaster either, but as far as I know they are over budget unless you can find a good used one. The main thing I would suggest is that you pick one in 12 gauge with interchangeable chokes. You'll get more versatility out of it.

Not exactly true, Current Remington arms has it's QC criticized out of /k/ a fair bit. It's possible to get a decent 870 new to my knowledge, but the express line is trash for the asking price.

The Model 12 and 1200/1300 are great fucking shotguns. It's a shame they aren't produced anymore.

Honestly Remington's QC is shit and has been shit in recent years. You could get an older remington, but then again there are a lot of older options too that are just as good. If you wanted something new Mossberg is a better alternative

I'm glad this thread popped up I was just looking for something nice to keep at home and have fun with target practice when I move into the new apartment, but I live in Shit Jersey so my options are limited. I was looking at the 870 express HD tactical at dick's sporting goods just to get a basis on the cost, any suggestions?
>>
>>33699458
Gonna be my first firearm as well if that makes any difference
>>
I bought an express last year, was a little rough and sometimes target load would stick in the chamber. I smoothed out the chamber with some very fine sand paper and after 1000ish rounds of target load the action is very smooth.

It takes a bit of breaking in but mine has been very enjoyable

Any of you dudes have experience with Baikal side by sides? I bought one on a whim for 225 bucks but I can't pick it up for a while. From what I've read it seems to be a solid gun for the price.
>>
>>33698838
Because lots of people buy a shotgun and shoot maybe one box of shells a year then put it in a closet.
Some people did this decades ago, when Remington was still doing good shit.

So yeah, good or bad, lots of people never find out, just so happen that recent 870s are fucking junk and people who don't know better still parrot what they heard coming from people owning the old good ones.

For what it's worth, I see plenty of bitching about shitty fitting and manufacturing, rust and broken extractors, outside of 4chan.
I'd personally rather spend my money on a Chinese clone.
>>
>>33699458
Don't get the 870 Express, get a Mossberg 500 or 590, or an Ithaca M37

Maybe an old Winchester 1200, or a 1300, if you like Duke Nukem.
>>
did mossberg change their bolts for a more subdued color? my really old one is stainless.
>>
Was Y2K the real reason your family bought that?
I can't imagine any scenario where Y2K would lead to a SHTF scenario
Unless if misinformation and/or stupidity was THAT bad back then
>>
>>33696769

Mossberg 835. It's a beefed up mossberg 500 with a removable choke. The advantage is that it can shoot normal 2 3/4" shells as well as 3 1/2" shells that are just short of 10 guage in energy/shot count. Also, if you handload you can make your own skeet loads with a ridiculous amount of shot compared to smaller shells. Yes I cheat while doing friendly skeet shooting sometimes because it's fun.

2 3/4" 00 buckshot 9 pellets
3 1/2" 00 buckshot is 18 pellets

Also, 3 1/2" steel BB shot has around the same energy at the muzzle as a 300 win mag but it loses energy fast. That being said, I still managed to kill a running rabbit at 30 yards with a single BB (the rest missed) that penetrated all the way through the heart and out the other side.

The only draw backs I've noticed with it are that you have to rack it a bit faster/harder to cycle sometimes rather than as slow as you want with the 500 and that the length of pump travel is like an inch longer to accommodate the extra shell length. I didn't notice the extra inch until someone brought it up to me much later though but it would make it slower to operate if you're doing 3 gun or something.

>>33696670

Yes it's up there with the GOAT of pump action shotguns being the mossberg 500, 590, and the remington 870 which have been used by police, militaries, and sportsmen around the world. Make sure you look up how to clean it or it will rust away.
>>
>>33698838
Bullshit. I bought a new one on a sale, so did my friend. Both were rusting within a day of removing them from the box. The finish on the newer guns is absolute trash, looks rough on the inside as well.
>>
>>33706731
just the express model right? I cant imagine the police model being shit without coppers going crazy online.

What about the wingmaster?
>>
>>33698838
I know real people, Old peope even. they too hate modern remington

"its just not what it used to be"

that being said they also think their 1986 remington 700 is god's gift to bolt actions
>>
>>33706756

The 700 platform is still one of the best platforms to build a long range rifle on. That being said, I'm only really using their brand of receiver
>>
>>33706685
Breh, people thought society as we knew it would just completely colapse.

In reality, really only a few things ended up happening; some clocks and timers would think it was 1900 and maybe not work as they should, for instance some VCRs couldn't have their time set anymore so you couldn't record tapes with them anymore (but could still play them).
And every system where the time and date really mattered was in the progress of being updated as this became general knowledge.

This of course didn't stop lots of people to think that it would somehow cause a global nuclear war. I guess it was the 2012 Mayan Calendar shit of it's day, except maybe less retarded (arguably).
>>
>>33696670
>From 17+ years ago
That's one of the good Remingtons Anon, keep it as long as you can
>>
>>33706756
An 86' made 700 is probably quite alright, but I always disliked how they would silver solder or braze the bolt-handle onto the bolt, various aftermarket fixes exist for that, like staking the handle in place, or buying a Ruger M77 instead.

>>33706783
Well it has a big aftermarket, but I can't wait for the design to become public domain so a competent company can copy the rifle but make it not shitty like current Remington, then you can build your own boltgun from the ground up and it's good.

A bit like how Colt no longer has dibs on the AR15 and everyone does a better job than them.

>>33706740
I remember an anon from here making a video where he drunkenly swears about the extractor on his shearing off when pumping it, make of that what you will.

I wonder if remington could make more money if they'd allow you to make your own rifle on the their site and just pumped out receivers, bolts, and FCGs instead of repairing their tooling for everything else. By the time their patent expired they'd have the market cornered with their cheaper parts and keep the competition out.

The kind of popularity that would come with a rifle you can build exactly how you want from dozens of brands at a low cost and maybe even have an option to put it together in their factory might make it the AR15 of bolt guns. For those too lazy or uninformed to build their own they could always still offer complete rifles using other company's parts. A cheap base tacticool model with a magpul stock+magpul AI magazine bottom metal could cost a buyer $500, be a sub-moa gun with factory loads, and still make remington a lot of money now and well after the patent expires.

Im bored right now, I might try to pitch the idea to them in a letter, maybe I'll get lucky and they won't send it straight to the trash.

>>
>>33708255
1) try your hardest to stop being a faggot, I believe in you.
2) KSGs are great, but get some irons or an optic at least. Standard AR15 height works best. You'll also want to pick up the extended selector lever, makes a world of difference. Aluminum followers are a good idea but not really necessary. I put a limbsaver on mine as recoil is stout, makes it much more pleasant to shoot. Also consider the choke adapter for it, turns birdshot from a novelty into a serious ass reamer.

So, I have this burning desire to purchase a mossberg shockwave. I already own a 590, but like the idea of something that compact for the cramped hallways of my house or for possible standoffs from my vehicle or the alleys by my property. Talk me out of it before I'm stuck with this thing.

You can put the same grip on your 590 and only be like, 2 and a half inches longer assuming you're using an 18.5 inch barrel.

That's like, $20 for a grip as opposed to $500 for a new gun. Do the math.

Buy a new machined extractor, take a good look at your chamber too. The surface finish should be extremely shiny, if it isn't, find a local gunsmith that isn't an idiot, it's a simple job to polish it up a little. The stock extractor is MIM junk.

After that, you'll have a reliable shotgun. It won't be smooth like an old 870 but it'll work.

Every review I have ever seen on the KSG basically says, "this is a novel concept, but I wouldn't trust my life to it because it doesn't always work and its banged together out of recycled bottles by the retarded monkeys at the Kel Tec factory."

So I'll take my chances with a proven design rather than a Kel Tec toy.
>>
>>33716207
Right. Here's another review from someone who owns one: That's all bullshit and they're good to go, and all those dipshits are the ones who never realized you have to finish the last quarter inch of pump travel to kick out the next shell and threw a fit because they didn't do it right.
>>
>>33716277
It physically breaks. It's just not as inherently reliable a design as the mossberg. It's also rediculously overpriced.

Stop shilling kel tec garbage.
