GWOT saw a huge surge in the use of SF units, which have always been a prime driver of modern military tactics and gear choice, but the constant pressures of wartime didn't really allow a lot of time for experimentation. They needed something that was guaranteed to work every time and couldn't get too adventurous.

Now that it's "peacetime" and SF aren't doing an endless deployments in the sandbox, so they can apply a lot of the lessons from GWOT and experiment with new things in the lower intensity, short-term shit still going on.
