Suppose you guys would be best to ask; Can we get a general prep thread without weapons?
>>
>>33688538
>/k/ - Weapons
>>
>>33688544
>Implying we don't have armor and clothing threads
>>
>>33688538
Weapons board. No weapons.
Fuck the fuck off and never return.
>>
>>33688538
what you don't like weapons?
>>
>>33688578
Of course I do but what are you supposed to do when the world ends, camp in your gun room, Can't take them all with me, Can't take an infinite supply of ammo with me
>>
>>33688655
so it's easy to have a prep thread that doesn't exclude weapons.

anyone have a solar still ready to make fresh water or is there a good reason not to have one pre built?
>>
>>33688538
Ok then OP, what were you thinking about? Most of the prepping threads don't revolve around weapons and whether /k/ likes it or not prepping is /k/
>>
>>33691017
I have my Prepper PDF that's still a work in progress which I can post, and then there's Dutch's pastebin somewhere. Both of those don't really talk much about weapons.
>>
>>33688538
Did you just make a fucking thread on /k/, and specifically say no weapons? What the fucking shit, dude?
>>
>>33688675
>is there a good reason not to have one pre built?
Well, it's not exactly a reason not to, but they're easy enough that you don't really need to build one beforehand.
>>
>>33692079
i've been thinking about splitting a plastic 55 gallon drum, plumbing some split pvc into it with outlets so it'd pretty much run itself with hopefully more output than a pit trap. it'd be enough effort and materials i don't quite have on hand to make it worthwhile to do on a free weekend but i don't see anyone else doing it. maybe they just don't have salt springs in their backyards.
>>
>>33692219
What about rainwater collection running into a cistern that then feeds your still?
>>
>>33692302
rainwater should be good to drink as is unless there's fallout or something. the salt produced as a byproduct would also be useful, i might have to pre filter it if i planned on salting meat with it or something.

What's a good take-anywhere lightweight solution for processing drinking water?

Are those filter straws any good? I don't trust purification tablets to filter shit like poo-filled Katrina floodwaters
>>
>>33692342
I know rainwater "should" be good but at the same time if it's coming off my roof, down pipes and shit I'd still prefer to clean it up a little, especially if it sits in the barrels for a while.

How would you plan on getting the salt? If you have a spring wouldn't you get a near constant source of water meaning it won't dry up leaving the last residue? Or are you planning on filling it then leaving it to empty before filling it again?
>>
>>33692379
Sawyer filters, katadyn filters, the lifestraw is ok if you are drinking from a stream.

But if you are talking about poo filled Katrina water I'd filter, boil then puritab just to be safe.

or solar still as we've been talking about

>>33692397
i was thinking i'd refill the drum halves with a bucket from the spring. after a while i'd either drain out the concentrated brine and pan dry it or just wait until rock salt started to form in the halves.
>>
>>33692482
Ah Fair enough that makes sense, the problem with solar stills is they aren't very fast, having a hand pump would be quicker especially if you are throwing it in something like a BoB
>>
>>33692379
Those straw filters are gimmicks. You want something with fittings so you can rig it to gravity filter into hydration bladders. The Sawyer Squeeze is the best option on the market.

But if you're filtering poo water, you're going to want to boil, or use iodine, chlorine, or chlorine dioxide, too. Filters don't do anything about viruses.
>>
>>33692499
i have a couple ceramic filters, it'd be more for my bug in plan, fresh water that i didn't have to store ahead of time. also filters don't work on saltwater and i don't know where the closest freshwater source is, it's pretty saline here on the coast.
>>
>>33692600
Fair enough, I will always love by the Bug in plan. I'm not really in the best position as it stands but bugging out (at least without a designated location) will misread likely result in death.
>>
>>33688538
water and water purification tablets and two lifestraws and water and water purification tablets

you can chuck a rock at a squirrel if you have to, but you need water.
>>
>>33688538
OP, I think you phrased this wrong. perhaps a prep thread about peripheral and essential equipment that isn't a gun or knife.
>>
>>33692925
I think he phrased it fine, there are just retards on this board that sperg out while completely ignoring the anime, and patch threads etc. Some people just enjoy being retarded but hey, it bumps the thread.

We have Gear/clothing threads that facilitate the use of weaponry.

Preppers/SHTF posters are scum that are constantly interjecting their specific fantasy scenario onto everyone else.

Now to strawman even harder...

>I'll just bugout as my primary plan. There's totally no benefit from bugging-in.
>You'll stand out with all that gear! They will shoot you first!
>Your SHTF gun should be a common one/military caliber so you can loot the dead bodies for ammo.

I have never understood why people insist on jumping in just to go "hey you guys are dumb with your fantasies" like it will stop us in any way.

The fact is prepping is /k/ because /out/ doesn't like it because muh weapons. Go tell on one of the anime threads or patch threads for a change.

>I have never understood why people insist on jumping in just to go "hey you guys are dumb with your fantasies" like it will stop us in any way.

Go back to when /k/ didn't have a gear general and you had all the SHTF autists telling the geardos how incompatible their gear was for their specifically imagined SHTF scenario.

Prepping is not /k/. Preppers quite often have little to no gun experience and may not even own or be interested in guns. Ironically, the OP specifically asked for "without weapons" in this thread, further illustrating my point. Gear threads are quite /k/ because they are always discussed within the context of using guns and/or warfare.

As cancerous as /ak/ threads are they are /k/ because this is 4chan. They eat up a single thread for their containment so it works out. Patch threads are very much the same thing. A SHTF general is just pretty gay, desu. I'm not sure what you're missing out from other places like survivalistboards if you want to come defend a thread that requests, "without weapons." In fact, since the OP doesn't want to talk about weapons, it would probably be a good idea to try /out/.
>>
>>33700125
That's all well and good, but you can't talk to /out/ about chemical protective gear, you can't talk to /out/ about what sort of tools are useful to keep around your house should SHTF etc. As autistic as people may think these threads are prepping is /k/ it'll end up becoming a thing simmilar to /ak/ and patch threads. Prepping goes far beyond what out talks about hence the reason it ends up circling back to /k/ as it relates more to /k/ than anything else.

Hell OP said no weapons that could mean that rather than talking about 10 inch barrel over a 14 inch barrel, we could talk about the pros and cons of reloading in a SHTF situation.

/ak/ /gq/, and the patch threads all fall under the formula of X+guns/warfare. Go look, even the patch thread has more weapons related content than this thread does.

On /out/ I currently see two "outdoors weapon carry" threads, a gorka thread, and two survival threads. Really, if you want to talk about prepping for "off the grid living," it is better to post there.

Do you see the problem here?

I was actually critically constructive and mentioned there is more relevancy on another board for this specific topic despite his ignorance.

Cool there may be other threads and other boards but this one is currently here.

Does anyone know the rough shelf life for ammunition if it's kept in a cool dry environment?

consensus is around 100 years for modern primers, longer for corrosive berdan.
