I was just looking for a carry knife in the uk and learned that it's illegal to have a folding knife that locks, as if anyone's going to think well I was going to commit a murder with this but I wouldn't want to catch my fingers on it if I hit a rib so I'll leave it out

If you are serious get a maglite or something similar. No point carrying <3 inch knife for self protection.

Kitchen knife would be against the law, it is illegal to carry a knife over 3 inches anywhere without a reason (self defense is not one) i.e. transportation , although I doubt the police would care to much and if they did it would be hard to make stuff up.

Try a sectional pool cue in a carry case.
Just make sure you know which pubs have pool tables and where the local pool clubs are !
