Everyone still uses sheps. I was drafted to augment secret service in 2011. Little known fact most the dog teams you see are mostly air force dog handlers in civilian clothes.

Anyway, they use a vast assortment of breeds but mals are becoming the gold standard when it comes to multi purpose working dogs. All that means is a dog that is patrol(bitework) and detection certified.

One of the mastiff looking breeds. I got into k9 because of my dad, he used to breed and train "lucero bandogs."

Bandogs are all around great dogs, good with kids, and excellent drives and intelligence for protection training. Romans used them as war dogs and to protect lands.

My girlfriend worked at a dairy that had an Anatolian and a Great Pyrenees as their livestock dogs. Eventually they had puppies and kept one on as another livestock dog; she was intimidating as fuck but so friendly. I've still got a coyote jaw from one of her kills.

The k9 world has changed quite a bit and every service is transitioning. Not many people know but the USAF runs the military working dog program for all of the services in the dod regardless of branch. Army, marines, navy, and some dhs all have to attend the 342nd TRS military working dog school at lackland air force base. Even when you get to your base as say a marine or soldier your operating procedures, training requirements, and certification standard are all based on air force doctrine and training.
It used to be the services only would pick people from the military police/security forces units. Those individuals usually had to have a clean record, good pt scores, and higher aptitude than his peers. The norm was MCD's or e4 that was on track to put on NCO. That's the route I had to take, I was a regular cop for three years then had to put together a k9 package, get the blessing of the kennel master at my base, my supervisor/flight chief, and commander all had to write recommendation letters as well. Even then there's no guarantee your package would actually be selected. It was pretty competitive when I was going through that phase.
Now days the military is realizing they can run a more effective mwd program by taking kids right out of basic and keeping them in the career field. It used to be once you made e6 you were done with the k9 world and had to go back to shit straight leg units. This caused a lot of very experienced handlers knowledge to go to waste and the MWD world was being run by essentially brand new people with only 3 or 4 years of dog training experience.

They're pretty smart overly protective of property and generally low maintenance. Most people hate them for the same reason someone wouldn't like fried chicken, watermelon or malt liquor. Anyway, I taught a seven year old pitbull, several commands. Such as, other paw, roll over, roll over the other way, and spin around.

As well as all the basic shit he already knew. Like speak, paw, sit, up, wait, come who's there, get em. So basically he's smarter than your dog.

Because of that a lot of handlers, myself included would purposely fail promotion testing to stay in the k9 units.

Now days you can get a k9 contract at meps at that will be your career for life. My little brother is in the army but is at Lackland for k9 school at this time. He will be in the career field until he retires and honestly that's the way it should be. The army completely split the k9 career field into its own entity and the rest of the services are following suit.

As of now the navy picks the top performers from their MA school. air force still runs the old school way BUT that is slowly changing and within a few years k9 will break off off security forces completely. marines have always taken kids right out of basic.
There was a program the army and marines did called TEDD which was a massive failure. They took infantryman, gave them two weeks off training, a civilian contracted dog and told them to find bombs. They constantly got themselves and the dogs killed. They refer to themselves as k9 but they are far from it. It takes about two years before a real k9 team is deployable with training, certification, validations, and training. These guys got two weeks of training.
