There is some good info on arfcom about the lifetime of guns under full auto fire posted by a guy who works/owns a rental full auto range in Vegas. Unfortunately it doesn't say much for barrel life because it's an indoor range, and they only changed barrels on guns when they were keyholing, and when a gun starts to keyhole at 25 yards the barrel has been shot out for quite some time. I'd just like to know of someone who has shot out a 107 or 104FR barrel and how many rounds it took. Pretty much all the ammo available for either is bimetal jacket so that's not a consideration.

Sorta semi. I have a Russian kit but even if I had not gotten the 104UR, I would still not have that kit built yet, so I would still be krinkless. It has been a fun gun and mine is well made. If you care about owning a Russian collection at all it would probably be more pertinent to just go straight for the jugular and get a Russian kit or a kit build. I don't usually like sheepdog but he had two nearly flawless 1986 kit builds listed a while back. These were primo builds on 74uLLC receivers.

It was advertised as an Egyptian Maadi AKM, but I start to question that


The fire selector reads S A R from top to bottom and the combat sight setting reads P. Which suggests that it's Romanian.

But it doesn't have that vertical foregrip most Romanian AKMs seem to have


Also on the factory stamp says TRA, which I can't find info online about at all.

That is definitely a Maadi. Maadi welds are sloppy like yours and the mag well dimple is longer than most AKMs as well. The garbage paint is another giveaway, and the RSB caliber markings and described black pistol grip are consistent with Maadi export kits I've seen.

Lack of trunnion markings and garbage paint job is another point towards Maadi - a Romy would have a vertical arrow in a triangle next to the serial, similar to an Izhmash stamp but lacking the arrow fletches.

The Egyptians got a bunch of Romanian, Russian, and I think Polish parts to kickstart their AK production. Those parts usually ended up on their export guns along with "S/A/R" non-Arabic receiver markings and black or brown pistol grips. My Maadi MISR S/A had a Romanian sight leaf, and a friend of mine bought a MISR-10 that came with a Russian one. I'm not quite sure what you mean by grooves in the handguard, unless you're referring to the notches at the top, which are just the bottom half of the ventilation cuts. Another thing you can check for are spot welds on the back of the magazine feed lips; if they're teardrop or egg shaped instead of circular, the magazine is Maadi too (though chances are the mag at least isn't original).

For reference, here's a picture of another deactivated Maadi a guy on AK Forum got; it even has the same TRA marking yours does. From what you've described, I'd bet on your AK having been exported by Maadi to an eastern European military, where it was heavily used before being deactivated and finding its way to you.

got my $6 steelies from AoA today

they really are rough, but only 1/6 needed repairs

the lips holding the floorplate one were bent right the fuck out of shape and the floorplate wouldn't stay on
the floorplate was also missing a lot of material on one side, like it had been dragged or ground

but, a little bending with a pliers and a spare floorplate later and it was good as new
