Are there really people who CC who think that you need a "cover garment" like the giant windbreaker he's wearing in order to conceal a gun?

Paul Harrel. I actually only discovered him recently thanks to /k/ He's actually got really good, informed gun videos. Check him out.

Having looked up this guy (and binged through a few videos) he definitely lives in a place where wearing a hunting jacket is both socially acceptable and at times needed.

I love this guy, not only does he look like Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson had a baby, but he's probably become my new favorite gun youtuber. The epitome of 'speak softly, carry a big stick'.

Not to mention his gun collection, but my dad also has a Steyr GB so I'm biased.

Paul sees this and lands six out of six shots on the driver. Crazy's passenger, who had no idea what the fuck was happening, was left unscathed.

>what a guy

That's how people who actually train do it.

Tom Givens has ~60 students of his with reports of being victorious in defensive shootings. The average amount of shots that actually hit bad guys was above 90% all across the shootings.

iirc, the average OIS has cops with a ~13% hit probability for rounds fired at suspects.

Spring compression is a thing, fuckwit, people like you will repeat anything that you hear from random places that sound about right and defend it as fact.
>>
>>33682928
storing a magazine loaded will not wear down a spring no matter what you want to believe
>>
>>33682928
It surprises me that people lack the understanding of basic mechanical functions: Objects under tension and stress for prolonged periods will suffer weakness and/or damage if the stress isn't exerted.

Simple: Take a cheap clicky pen and click it open. Don't touch it for 3 years and try to unclick it and click it again. It won't be as snappy.

Seriously, some people are twats.
>>
>>33682950

This
>>
>>33682943
>>33682928
>>33682950

It does reduce spring strength via creep or relaxation. however this happens in an almost asymptotic fashion and mags can usually be loaded for years without serious effect unless weight or temperature guidelines are exceeded. loading and unloading magazines frequently is usually more harmful to their health than keeping them loaded

TLDR: magazine wear is not a serious concern. just replace mag springs every some odd years or thousands of rounds like a non retard.
>>
>>33678716

kek, haven't seen this one yet.

>>33682894
To be fair, Paul does concede that magazine design and quality play a huge part. He mentions the vast difference in quality between his Beretta magazines and the ones he was issued in the military, and that his are more durable and would last much much longer loaded.

I'm waiting for his Stery GB video to ask him if he has replaced any springs or hard to get parts.

I'm assuming he'll retire the GB soon since he got it in the 80s and if they're a lack of parts for it.

>>
>>33682928

No. you are stupid.

loading/reloading wears down the mag spring. leaving it loaded or empty does nothing. a spring that remains compressed or uncompressed doesn't wear. It's the action of compressing and uncompressing over and over.

this is the actual, physical, engineering facts of how springs work.

you are just plain wrong. it is not a matter of opinion. it is a well understood, well known, well documented fact, that this is how springs work.

so shut the fuck up already
>>
>>33682684
will baneposting ever cease?
>>
>>33685167
can't the springs go bad after constant compression over a period of like 20-30 years though? Obviously being compressed/decompressed wears it down faster, but I thought that even being compressed wears it down eventually, if over a very long period of time
>>
>>33685257

20-30 years of temperature fluctuation, exposure to air moister, etc. are going to be what effects the metal. the only way it being loaded would add to it is if the rounds began to corrode as well. corrosion and rust and shit spreads like cancer.
>>
>>33685257

also, the whole "spring creep" thing people talk about only happens when a metal is really hot, like, really really fucking hot. unless your spring is made out of lead.... which will cause creep at room temperature lol

but yeah, ferris metals like iron or steel can be put under stress in a spring and last literally forever.

a good magazine has a spring that has a "peak sustained pressure" at or above that of being fully loaded. cheap shitty mags on the other hand MIGHT have a LIMITED amount of wear if left loaded. but again.... temp and all that is a bigger factor.

is the tension cycle that kills springs... loading and unloading. compressing and uncompressing.
>>
>>33682870
>iirc, the average OIS has cops with a ~13% hit probability for rounds fired at suspects.
This is why I don't get the whole "you can trust the police, who needs guns?" mentality. Most police officers can't shoot for shit, including the ones here. I only know one guy who regularly trains on the force here, and that's my brother.

>The New York City Police Department has their officers fire 50 rounds of ammunition, twice a year. Part of their qualification course is not even timed. Every year, their hit ratio runs about 10%-20% in the field. In one year, they fired 1,293 shots on the streets of New York to hit 64 suspects and 11 innocent bystanders. That’s “good enough” for some, but I’d like to see them do better.
>The Los Angeles Police Department, on the other hand, requires officers to shoot every 30 days. Their qualification course uses a smaller target and has reasonable time limits, which are strictly enforced by turning targets, which disappear when the time limit expires. The department as a whole has about a 55% hit ratio. The Metro Division, which gets even more focus on firearms training, has an 85% hit ratio. Coincidence?

Mechanical engineer here, with a background in materials and failure analysis.

Prolonged spring compression is not something you need to worry about.

Yes, it is a factor. But it is an afterthought compared to material quality, environmental conditions, and the all-important stress-strain cycle. I have never heard of a spring "failing" due to prolonged compression. It will get weaker, but asymptotically, and in the case of magazines most springs are designed with an excessive elastic modulus for this reason. They will wear out, but from 200% of what you need to 180% of what you need.
>>
>>33687133
Yup. There's no way I'm going to depend on some person that will come 15 minutes after a 911 call that couldn't even tell me what model his Glock is to come and save me and my family.

I'm not that even good of a shooter but from doing practicing regularly, I'm better than the majority of cops in this country at shooting. Shit is pretty sad. Don't even get me started on when someone assumes people in the military know how to shoot handguns.

Tom Givens has an excellent study on this kind of stuff in one of his books.
