I must be some sort of pleb, I didn't even know Shatner did this. Even more glorious is that he does it in exactly the way you'd expect he would.
>>
>>33670170
Shatner's music career was, generally, better than you'd expect but worse than you'd hope.
His cover of "Common People" is amazing, though.

Why haven't railed M14 receivers become unavoidably common like railed AR receivers have?
Is there some downside to them that I'm overlooking?
>>
>>33672448
M14s as a whole are far less common than ARs, stands to reason the parts are less common as well. A lot of people that like M14s are either traditionalists or fudds so that stifles their development as well.

M14s don't sell well enough to offset the cost of R&D for parts like that, and the people who do buy M14s are sticklers for tradition. That one in particular prohibits iron sights from even being an option, which are very good on that weapon.

People who buy old Cold War shit like that don't buy it because they want a solid .308. They buy it because they want an M14, and a railed receiver makes it not an M14.

Polytech M14S I got two weeks ago.
>>
>>33672821
How's the quality? I've never actually handled one in person.
>>
>>33672910

It's solid. More accurate than I am. People say that Chinese M14s tend to have soft bolts, but I'll shoot it until/if the problem arises. It's also built to USGI-spec, which Springfields are not. I'll probably swap out the op rod spring with a USGI one, though.

I got it for $950, and they threw in the GI sling with it. Kicks the shit out of or is the exact same thing as anything Armscorp, Springfield or Fulton Armory makes. All the shit-slinging between the different fanboys is making mountains out of molehills, splitting hairs and really a whole bunch of ado about nothing.
>>
>>33672934
Cool, thanks for the info. Only ever had opportunity to handle some Springfields and one Fulton before.
>>
>>33672934
Really the best way to go about running a gun with a sketchy reputation is to just shoot it and see what warrants changing.

I got a Fed. Ord. M14A which had an ultra shit-tier receiver with really bad quality building that had to be unfucked by a gunsmith. It generally worked well after that and I had a lot of good use out of it before trading it across for a USGI-barreled M1A which is bolted together a lot tighter and shoots a bit better.

If you get it cheap enough, you can usually dump it for what you paid. My M14A was broken down for it's parts and completed an LRB build.
>>
>>33672992

Ignore everything anyone says about "muh history, dat's commie garbage". Every single M14 on the Title I market out there is a clone. None of them are original and I don't think any at this point are even built with USGI parts anymore. Springfield Armory is not the Springfield Arsenal, despite what their marketing may imply. Only go based on quality of the specimen inspected. If you decide to get an M1A because you evaluated your options and it won out, great.

M14s are kinda finicky when shopping for one, because they tend to have minor issues out of the box that you need to fix, regardless of who makes it. Sometimes the bolt doesn't like to cooperate, sometimes the bolt is soft, sometimes there's burrs on the receiver, whatever. The good news is that they can usually be fixed. My $900 rifle can have them and a $2000 rifle can have them.

Be EXTREMELY careful about accurizing them, despite the fact that every ex-Marine and wannabe who ever touched one likes to do that. That shit is a fucking money pit with a low ceiling for diminishing returns. It's a Cold War battle rifle, and not even the most accurate one. It was never designed to be a DMR or sniper's rifle and the only reason it got pressganged into that role is because we needed one for Afghanistan quick, fast and in a hurry and we had them sitting around. Any bolt-action .308 you can buy will, out of the box, kick an accurized M14's ass from here to Sunday. I'd throw a scope on it (and I plan on doing it to mine), that's the farthest I'd go. Before accurizing anything, get as good with it as you can stock. 90% of rifles are more accurate than their shooters and that goes for M14s too.
>>
>>33673068
Don't sweat it man, I got an M1A years ago. Been pretty okay.

I was having a hell of a time deciding between the bm59 or the small batch of folder stocked 308 veprs kvar imported.
Decided to stick with the familiar ak, but I'll still have to get a bm59 one of these days. Already have a mas 49/56 converted to 308. The mas is one of the coolest looking and most fun rifles in existence IMO. I'm not the biggest fan of the trigger, but whatever.
I just wish we could get some of those sweet swiss stg rifles imported closer to the ~$1000 mark. They're some of the best looking rifles IMO.
>>
Hate to start a classic /k/ autism battle, but what are the advantages and disadvantages of a G3 clone vs an FAL clone? I've heard a lot of good things about PTRs. I have no experience with battle rifles, but would like to pick one up.
>>
>>33685926
FAL has better ergos, cooler furniture, generally softer if you tune the gas right, won't destroy brass

But you probably shouldn't shoot steel, it's more expensive for basically everything, and some people complain about the mag release, but if you're a pussy just buy an extended one

G3 will bit a bit more accurate and will eat steel case like candy. If you want to mount an optic, PTR makes them with top rails already attached. FAL will be more ergonomic. If you want to mount an optic on them, you'll have to get a bolt on railed dust cover.

My advice would be to try both if you can. They feel and work pretty differently. Either one is a great choice.

In your opinion?

I think it HAS to be either the AR10(/SR25) OR a FAL.

I am talking about the mechanical systems, not just SHEER WEIGHT (obviously the HCAR probably recoils amazingly nicely, because it weighs as much as a house).

Thanks in advance!

its $700.

I've been told they weren't bad receivers, they just weren't all uniform. So in theory if it was put together by an actual competent gunsmith and not jim in his garage it could be just as good as any other FAL. I only want to know what I should look for to figure out if its been assembled right or not. If its good to go I'll probably buy it, if not then I'll go down the street and put a DSA on order finally.

Some Imbels had the gear logo stamped to hard and it bent the receiver, Gunplumber says you can file the inside of the receiver with a safe sided file.
Maybe sandpaper wrapped around a knife or something like that and taped off to create safe edges. If your brave put lapping compound on the bold just where it rubs against the receiver on the rails. Be careful with the lapping compound, especially around the locking surfaces.. Just to be clear, I'm not a gunsmith and I've never done any of this myself.

Yes, its a service grade M1 from the CMP. Metal is freshly park'd, stock is new manufacture. barrel isn't new though, its in eh condition. If I had to do it again I'd order one of the more expensive ones with a new barrel put on.

Normally its luck of the draw if you get a new stock, but I think the CMP has run out of original GI stocks in good enough condition to be sold. Luckily they're getting a new shipment from the Philippines soon IIRC.I believe all service grade parts are refinished though.

I didn't. I don't particularly need a bipod at the moment. I was just asking since you took off yours. Also, check out what I found on the wiki page for T48:

>The United States also received a small number of FAL Heavy Barrel Rifles (HBAR) (either 50.41 or pre-50.41) for testing, under the designation T48E1, though none of these rifles were adopted by US.

That and this pic are still the only things I've seen in regards to those heavy barrel versions.
>>
>>33701424
I'd honestly recommend against them, they're autism pleasing on kits but there's a reason a lot of dudes just took theirs off. They're relatively heavy, make the grip uncomfortable when you hold it folded, not useful on anything but dirt, clamp affects accuracy, and they're also one of the worst things I've ever put onto or taken off a gun. Getting them on requires you to orient a spring loaded detent properly and then force the leg up into the gun while you screw a bolt into place, which wouldn't be as much of a problem if you had literally anything to grip. I've only taken mine on and off 4 times maybe but I can't even count how many times my hand slipped and the leg fell out of place or the leg slipped and fucking launched the detent

If they weren't part of my kit I probably would have sold them to you rather than ever even bother attempting to put them on the gun again

They lock up nice and tight on mine, no wobble when deployed, anti rotation is nice I think I did something to mine cause it twists too far right now but I probably did that on my own

It's just the attachment method is absolute balls, if/when you buy one you'll wish you had a second person to hold the gun while you force the leg into position with one hand and screw the bolt into the other while holding the gun in a leg lock

There's also the Dutch QD one which is supposed to be a lot better but it's harder to find and more expensive. But that gucci value

Pretty much settled on a PTR for my first 308. I want to put on a retractable stock, be able to mount an optic, and be able to put a bipod on it. I would be doing all of that right away, not later on.

Is this the right PTR for what I'm trying to do:

https://www.atlanticfirearms.com/component/virtuemart/shipping-rifles/ptr-91-a3r-308-rifle-detail.html?Itemid=0

Retractable stock I'm looking at:
http://www.robertrtg.com/store/pc/G3-COLLAPSIBLE-STOCK-EX-LN-25p2056.htm

And does anyone know where to get a bipod?
>>
>>33703910
I should point out that I only picked that PTR for the bipod mount. If a bipod can be mounted to the GI models, I'd be happy with that as well.

Like this one:

https://www.atlanticfirearms.com/component/virtuemart/shipping-rifles/ptr-gi-r-308-rifle-paddle-mag-release-detail.html?Itemid=0

I actually prefer the green handguard anyway if that's the case.

G3 collapsible stocks suck balls and if you're going to spend enough time proned out behind your rifle that a bipod

Any tips for cleaning chambers after range trips?

I usually tend to shoot about 60 rounds a trip through rifles.

I have no rigid rods. I usually use otis pull through.

If I bought a cheap hoppes pistol cleaning rod could I just brush out chamber with a 45 brush?

You might want to ship ars your receiver and have him build your fal. That way he'll at least make sure it works properly being an enterprise receiver and all. Unless it's marked "buena park" you dont have anything good or special.

His kits are enterprises inventory from when the atf shut them down. Fuckers were sketchy af.

You get more mix n match options as well as parts guaranteed to work rather than just a kit with a ton of shit that will need replacing, ars would never sell junk. As well as he doesn't charge extra for hand picking or examining bullshit, he already sorted them into buildable kits that can be made into a rifle that works.

Nah. I've built both and disagree
The AK is easier because there's less filing and hand fitting to get the barrel properly attached.

Finally finished my FAL today btw.

Did you do the conversion, or was it a miraculously well done Century job? If you did it, how did you go about it?

Just like any other rifle I'd imagine. Point and shoot.

Is RFB best B? Should I get now in case they stop being as available? Useful for anything?

Anyone have experience with this particular rifle?
Famae 542-1
I want it fucking bad but 2 grand in Canadian Shekels is a lot for me right now,Im looking for any opinions good or bad before I buy it.
Im in canada so no fal for me >:(
>>
>>33699085
I thought the MDR was already vaporware confirmed? They've been saying "next month" for the last three years. Plus why would anyone believe the MDR would be substantially better than the RFB/RDB, products that have actually been on the market for a few years and already have several quality revisions?
>>
>>33722372
>>33722483
MDR is a meme. I honestly don't know why people are putting so much faith in this gun.
>>
>>33722483
The MDR has also been through several quality revisions; that's why it's taking so long.
The Quake II engine came out so they had to scrap the whole rifle and start over, etc.

RFB is also an ambidextrous 308 bullpen that takes common mags
>>
Anyone have an imagine of a G3 pattern rifle with a wood handguard and a folding stock?

I'm tempted by atlantics 899 PTR deal but I love wood and I love that folding stock.

I also am a huge fan aesthetically of the wide handguards.
I want to sell my shitty CETME and buy something nice
>>
>>33724379
I didn't say "common".
SR25 mags are the de facto standard; they work well and are readily available.
FAL mags are a mixed bag, and within that bag individual RFBs are notoriously picky about which specific, individual FAL mags they're willing to play nice with.
It would be a good compromise if Kel-Tec released an updated version of the RFB that fed from SCAR mags.

>I got lucky
Imbels are some of the better FAL barrels you can get.
>>
>>33734721
I got lucky because the rest of the original gun was treated like absolute shit.

There were dings and scratches in places they probably shouldn't be, the stock set was shit, the finish was probably 7/8ths of the way gone (the barrel had some left inside the hand guards and the lower had a bit left. The dust cover is little better than a dust cover shaped piece of rust) the bolt and carrier were okayish oddly enough though.

I feel like the previous gun was never cleaned or disassembled, carried fucking everywhere, but fired probably three magazines in its entire service.
>>

Wut are you talking about $30 a mag is pretty standard for good ones, even at $20 its a deal, don't get chink fal mags, dsa mags are questionablle though they'll be the only place you can find a gas tube probably, and surplus mags are generally whats recomended doesnt matter from where.

Yeah, there is no way to tell for sure since they got them from IMBEL in Brazil. I suppose it also depends on if your kit was made from one rifle or several.

The original rifles were acquired for a war that never went hot between Chile and Argentina. Look into the "Caravan of Death" that happened around the same time. Pic related.
