I quite enjoy the subject of improvised fighting vehicles, hillbilly armor, and other such creations, but haven't been able to find very much on the topic. Could you /k/omrades help me out?
>>
To my knowledge there isnt a, pardon the pun, technical manual on technicals. What do you want to know? General methodology is take an existing vehicle, add armor in select areas and mou t some sort of crew served weapon. Be it a 50 cal or recoil-less rifle or something similar.
>>
>>33668882
Honestly? I'd like to know everything.
Pretty unrealistically, I think it would be cool to make my own.
>>
>>33668937
>take literally any vehicle
>put a big gun in it

There's fancier technicals out there, armored and with rocket launchers, but usually any vvehicle-mounted gun will do, like an M2.

the point of the thing is to get heavy weapons to target fast rather than crew safety
that said, you just weld extra metal to the hood and doors to up armor it

Wouldn't adding any significant amount of armor ruin the suspension? Especially after you add in the extra people you'd be carrying to crew the weapon and such.

Not sure if it's this same techie but they were using a modified rocket "mortar" thing that made massive explosions. There's a drone cam of the thing landing in a city and the shockwave is impressive.

>>
>>33669158
none. From the Syria vids I've seen they're usually sporting either a 14.5x114mm, a TOW, or some random rocket tubes, so they're all fairly long range weapons and the technical is outside typical 'allah will guide my bullet' range. The 14.5mm might be closer if they're using them as direct fire, although half the time it looks like they're just lobbing bullets in the general direction of the enemy

I was thinking about the idea of using a crane truck as self-propelled artillery. Most of them already have all the hydraulic mechanisms in place to fit a rotating and elevating turret, you'd just have to fit somewhere for ammo storage and place mad-max tier armour plating on it. With the legs as well it'd be stable as fuck

This would probably be a better model to go off of since these things are built like a brick shithouse, but the trade off is that they're slow as buggery.

>>
>>33672683

>>
>>33672708
The fact that the engine is behind the cab / not directly at the front is advantageous, because you'd be less likely to get it fucked up by small arms fire.

Granted, if you're using these things as nigga-rigged artillery you're ideally not going to have them in a place where small-arms fire would be an issue, but since they're built out of solid af steal, you could just as easily mount an autocanon or 2 onto them and use them as AFVs, then you'd have to worry about armoured skirts and shit like that to protect the wheels, but they probably wouldn't get raped as quickly by an RPG compared to just a normal lorry.

There is a webm of the Ukranian war, in which they use a ZU-23 like a tachanka. It starts by firing off a few rounds, and then the gunners assistent of the towing truck snaps up the outriggers, lowers the wheels and they all drive out of the position, gunner still in the ZU-23.
>>
>>33669347
[overheats internally]
>>
>>33671346
I think there should be a 'Technical' technical trials, in which all kinds of currently available pickup trucks are evaluated for their ability to mount heavy weapons, namely .30 cal machine guns, .50 cal+ heavy machine guns, TOW launchers, recoiless guns.

Evaluation criterion are, mechanical fit of weapon tripods in the truck bed with minimal modification, the trucks ability to traverse terrain with the weapon, the ability to carry as many equipped troops as possible, the ability to strap on aplique armor (optional).

The fastest way of converting a particular model of truck would be to make purpose built truck beds with the gun mounts already built in, and swap out the original truck bed for our new and improved Technical bed. Alternatively, weld in spacer blocks so that there is no wiggle room for the tripod to move around in the truck bed.

Otherwise scraps of steel found lying around.

If you'd like to build your own, don't bother armoring, the amount of mild steel needed to stop even basic things would effect your performance.

>>33674342
Good pickups make for good technicals, they're made for carrying heavy loads around in the first place. Every criterion you've chosen is either not important at all or is basically ranked the same.

Sure, but you can contrast them on other criteria that do vary: cost, availability, durability under battle conditions, unobtrusiveness after modifications, all-terrain performance. You'd look at a pickup, a van, a step van, a crane, a Hummer, a dump truck, etc. Each has their advantages, especially if we're not just talking about raids and cavalry actions in the desert.

I'm a bit confused by the rationale behind a lot of these middle eastern ones covered in boilerplate.

Seems doubtful they're hardened, so 1/4-1/2" of random steel plate is questionable against, say, 7.62x39, and definitely not going to stop anything full-power, let alone .50bmg or 12.7x109.

Seems a bit retarded to just clad the whole thing in random metal. I guess it makes you feel better...until someone shoots at you and you get spalled.

I figured the best would be a few spaced plates around important bits, otherwise just save the weight and don't bother.

Hitler, the Rise of Evil. Details Hitler's early days. That's a scene where the Friedkorps comes and busts some Commie heads.

What would be some of the more effective things to mount on them? I mean specifics, not just "a heavy machine gun"

I've been wanting to buy a really shitty small car off of Craigslist to fuck around with at my ranch, like say a fiero, and I've been kinda thinking of making it look pseudo mad max-y for shits and giggles and to practice some welding I haven't done since high school. I've got a few stacks of vehicle leaf springs at a freinds house an de I've been wondering if a single layer of those would offer any small arms resistance if I were to say tack them onto a frame outside the car. Not that anyone would ever shoot it

Don't know, but I can give pointers if you're going to do it yourself.

1. Make sure your frame can handle the extra weight.
2. Suspension is pretty important.
3. Assymetrical weight distribution can make it suck to drive, and could flip you over.
4. Armor the engine/cab against small arms with steel plate. This should (kinda) balance the weight of the gun/mount. It's not really practical to armor it against anything heavier, and I doubt most commercial vehicles could take the weight.
5. Tires/lift kit. There might be a tactical reason.
6. Engine. All that extra weight still needs to move.
7. Learn how to weld. This should probably be #1.
8. Armor the gas tank and radiator. Learn from the killdozer's mistakes.

My Spanish is rusty but roughly
>the cabin and bed of the vehicle are made from a single piece. There are no doors for the driver(pilot) and passenger(copilot), but there is one in the rear, along with 12 hatches(iguess they mean the firing portable here)"

Yeah they're basically a heavy duty apc in a lot of ways, just have greasy dudes shooting out of firing ports rather than exposed weapon systems.
From what I've read they're actually fairly hard to take out with anything short of a light anti-tank round

I drive an Suzuki Jimny flatdeck, and am former nz army. My jimmy has a bash rail behind my window, I could easily mount a mag58 to it, no legal way to procure one, and would have trouble finding links.

Thoughts on this?

Whenever you see something armored like that it's safe to assume it was made for a one way trip.

Were they the blokes who did that nighttime raid on the German airfield? That's vague as shit, I know, but I remember seeing some half-arsed doco on it years ago.

Maybe inspired by it. I am pretty sure this was the one:

Google image searching for Operation Caravan doesn't give the original picture as a response, so it's probably just some other dudes.

Once a tank gets knocked out, runs out of fuel, a track gets destroyed, or is render inoperable in any other way, this is what ISIS does to them.
They do not have any facilities to service tanks so repairs are out of the question.
The hull gets taken apart to create those killdozers while the turret assembly gets lifted off and placed on a technical to continue serving its purpose.
>>
>>33684011
>>33684188
I meant what specific tank.
Looks a bit like an IS-3, but not quite.
