I've decided to go with an a2 stock simply because I like the look and feel, but I was wondering if some of the recoil reduction systems some folks suggest ( spikes and some others) would work in the a2 stock or if I needed anything special to make it work.

You're running checkdisk, fine, there are other hardware diagnostic tools in this compilation, as well as bootable Linux distributions (Parted Magic under HDD) with tons of easy to find tools.
Worst case, you can clone your dying drive to a new one bit for bit with error correction and hopefully succeed.
