Given how there's been a lot of DPRK threads up due to the shit currently going down, I was wondering if we could have an ROK thread to offset that. I have a bunch of pics and some idea of their capabilities, but I encourage anyone to share firsthand/secondhand experience with working with the South Korean military. Lets get this going.

Apparently from what I'm told these M1 helmet lookalikes are locally manufactured in South Korea from some kind of hardened plastic which was meant to afford similar ballistic protection to the steel helmet while being lighter. It appears that these are issued to units that aren't stationed on the DMZ. I'm not concrete on this and if anyone knows more about them feel free to chime in.

Also, it seems that the ROKMC and the ROKA are both for the most part transitioned to digi camo, though both services seem to be using different patterns (I'm not a camofag, I don't know the specific differences).

Just starting off with ground personnel right now.

ROKA soldiers with older woodland camo, looks like they're wearing some form of flak vest. Not sure how prevalent individual body armor is with the ROKA/ROKMC, though I'm guessing units near the DMZ are more likely to have them.

From relatives that served those aren't handed out at the DMZ for good reason, pretty much construction helmets that are only useful for falling rubble, which is what soldiers running around trying to maintain order in shelled cities would encounter it doesn't inspire much confidence.

Conscripts aren't trusted anymore with anything dangerous unless under close supervision because of several incidents involving an heroing and snapping. Which is stupid but take a bunch of people who are on the verge of suicide before getting taken out of school and then conscripted and this is what you get, I guess.

>>33659038
Yep, the ROK army is better equipped than most militaries in the region but that's not really an accomplishment. Constantly cash strapped and lots of corruption and outright abuse, it's gotten a little better but it's still pretty dysfunctional.

probably got some tier system going on regarding troops at least with active duty conscription guys.

Think they would have all troops equally equipped since in the past they had to deal with nk saboteurs and suicide squads like COIN tactics the west relearns.

On phone so sorry
>How is conscription viewed overall in SK?
Just something you have to do. Some think you become an adult only after service.
>How reliable/accurate is the K2 rifle?
Very. Never had much problems. I got 55/60 on a 550m range too.
>What determines if you get issued modern body armor/how widespread are plate-carriers?
Everyone on the GPs inside the DMZ are issued modern body armor. Everyone at the GOP(the limit lines) are issued semi modern to modern body armor. For the rest, only during when shit gets real and stuff like flak jackets with rifle inserts.
>What kind of units get optics?
Recon, spec ops, very frontline onfantry
>How are logistics for your unit?
Very good, consodering that we're inside the DMZ and only get resupplied twice a week.
>What are your responsibilities as a recon officer and what does ROKA recon do?
I lead a GP position which is a platoon size element in a highly fortified location within the DMZ. We do stiff like early warning and observation, and will be expected to hold as long as we can in wartime.
>Have you been stationed at the DMZ, and how was it?
Awesome. Shit blows up, saw a deer get blown in 3 pieces, saw a nork step on a mine etc. Unfortunately the norks blast weird operatic music about glorious socialism in the middle of the night so can get hard to sleep.
>Did you interact with any Norks?
Made rude gestures and pointed a sniper rifle at them. They all scurried.
>How are you reacting to all this shit that's been happening recently?
Same shit all the time. Unfazed, really.

>>
My Gramps was a military field liaison for the US Marines and the ROK Marines in Vietnam.

He called the ROKs "Blue Dragons" and said they were the most insanely brutal combat team he'd ever even heard of. They were all karate black belts and almost unstoppable when in assault.

Somewhere near the DMZ, when he first got the assignment, a sniper shot a popular ROK corpsman, and Gramps said they just blew through the nearest village, shot every military-aged man and beat the living shit out of everyone else. They killed all the animals and burned down the village, too. Through an interpreter,, he told the ROK CO that he couldn't pull that shit because it was considered war crimes. The KOK got on his radio, and 5 minutes later, Gramps got the word that he should take a walk when the ROKs were operating. He said he took a lot of walks during his tour.

Sounds about right. My father had a Tae Kwon Do instructor growing up in Minnesota that was an ROK vet from the Vietnam War who according to my dad taught the "real" version of TKD. Sparring sessions got so intense that it wasn't uncommon for dudes to have to go to the hospital afterwards. My uncle relates this one story
>ROK vet/instructor is recalling sweeping around a village
>Find some old guy in a hole obviously keeping an eye on them for the VC
>Vet/Instructor says that the old man pleaded for his life, saying that he was old enough to be their grandfather and to take pity
>Vet/Instructor ponders this for a moment
>Then remembers that he's a filthy fucking commie
>Blows away the old man, burn down the village to send a message
That guy helped instill a rather strong disliking of communists in my father.

Do you think that's actually possible? Not dissing you guys in any way but despite the technological/logistical inferiority of the North, do you think you guys could really get that far?

Last last round of questions
>How far away are the Norks from your position?
>What kind of artillery/air assets could you call in if shit kicked off?
>Do you guys have NBC gear at your position?
>What kind of anti-tank weapons does your unit have?

After a long week in the field or day at the office what do you guys get to eat when your back in civilization?

What is the alcohol of choice for military? Do you have heavy regulations about drinking during conscription? Do you have base supermarkets? base bars? enlisted club ? bowling alleys?

>The Blue Dragons was a ROKMC brigade

Ah, I didn't know that, Gramps would talk about the Blue Dragons, and I thought it was just a nickname for all ROK Marines, like Leatherneck for US Marines.

He had total respect for the ROK Marines, and even flew over to Korea a bunch of times to hang out with his buddies. He also introduced me to Korean BBQ, Kimchi, and Soju-- great stuff, once you get used to it.

They are around. They can face any NK tank head on so I guess they get to be on the front.

About the 1 month push, it really depends on whether North Koreans have much more or much less morale that we expected. Eventual SK victory is almost assured though.

Any MilFags whove trained with ROK Marines and Soldiers?

All my buddies who went over to train with ROK Marines tell me their a bunch of tough sons of bitches and that their infantry drills are on point

Lets say that by some miracle a NORK soldier manages to get close to a ROK Marine and has to engage him in hand to hand combat, do they even stand a chance?

What kind of hand to hand fighting training do the the ROK military get?

I actually think we'll reunify in 3 months. We have more artillery than the norks, we have 2 thousand 3rd gen tanks while they have none, etc.

No idea about russian stuff but probably not anymore. Those are getting old.

Around 400 to 600 meters

Ooh everything from 105mm, 155mm, CAS. No MLRS though.

NBC is a very important part of our defenses, and the army makes sure that every soldier has NBC gear.

OPSEC, but rest assured that we can take out tanks. Not very many though.

Beer and soju, mixed together. Absolutely no drinking on base, unless a l. Colonel says so. We have small PXs for use which are like convenience stores. No bars or clubs on base. US and SK militaries are pretty well integrated. There's a program where SK Army train and serve as part of US units stationed there, and it's SUPER fuckin competitive because everyone sees the US training as having less abuse and bullshit. As a US infantryman, every story I heard about SK forces painted them as being equal parts batshit insane and hardcore motherfuckers.

IIRC, SK has taken huge steps to take responsibility for their own defense instead of leaning on the US to take care of everything. I think it was 2015 when they formally took full control of their own defense matters and the US moved into a support role.

They celebrated by blowing shit up:

Honestly they didn't seem as well trained as us due to budget restraints, whilst we were training with them they were doing basic ITB ranges whilst we were doing Company sized attacks at night. They aren't as well equipped on a whole, and its interesting to note that for training they had a pool of sapi plates that they would take on a run, then drop off for the next group to use. (They also only got like 20 rounds for their runs, way to little) Unlike us few had optics, and I heard alot of US marines say that the k2 was a Pos, though I didn't see anything wrong with it personally, it seemed fine and unlike our SAWs the K3 shot without jamming even with regular mags. Also their MRE is wonderfully designed, and very good, but its countered by only having two flavors. But the ROK marines themselves were dedicated, and some of the fastest learners I've seen. Also they haze eachother at the drop of a hat

'ROK' Ready Solders

The position seen here, a modified Tae Kwon Do stance, is called ROK Ready and is an extremely difficult position to maintain, yet these solders will stand in this stance without moving for as long as there are visitors in the JSA area! No shift change, no bathroom breaks, no movement, this guard will remain at his post until relieved. And this does not mean only as long as visitors are inside the blue buildings, but anywhere inside the JSA perimeter. At building corners they stand half covered by the building and half exposed to the North Korean side, a symbol of being prepared to take cover if a fight breaks out, while being ready to fight at the same time. This is a power stance to show determination, strength, commitment. It's all a mind game to demonstrate power, determination and great will to let the North soldiers know they mean business. The North solders do nothing of this sort.

The Republic of Korea (ROK) Military Police solders serving in this special unit of the JSA are a unique bunch being required to be of above average Korean height, possess at least 1 black belt in Taekuondo, and have above average aptitude test scores. This is a very prestigious unit to serve in for the ROK soldiers, as it is for the US Army soldiers to serve in the UNCSB.

Late to the party, but I have a morbid question. What do you put your honest chances of survival at in a forward position like yours? I would assume the mines and your armaments could handle all but an incredible number of foot soldiers and tanks, but if they put some heavy artillery on you I would think it's just random chance at that point.

Special Forces, Rangers and Marines are all discharged at some point and they all become reservists.

>>33673691
Are you fucking stupid? If they serve more than 8 years and ETS/EAS then they go right back into the civilian world without any type of reserve time needed.
>>
To my knowledge many NCOs and COs do retire well before that, not to mention the enlisted troops.
>>
I don't know though whether the professional service personell that retires after 8 years are only exempt from reservist training or wholly discharged from reserve duties as well.
But I'd believe they are reservists on paper and called up in case of war moiblisation?

Camouflages currently used by the ROK Military (I'm listing the uniform users, gear in that camo can be mixed):

통합 전투복 얼루무늬 - ROK standard woodland (used by reservists who got issued these uniforms between 1991 and 2010~2013)

"특전 픽셀" - ROKPAT, "ROK MARPAT" (since 2006: Army Special Warfare Command, Airborne Rangers, overseas deployed troops, Navy Special Warfare Flotilla, Air-Force Combat Control Team and Special Air-Rescue Team)

화강암 픽셀 / "육군 디지털" - Granite-B (standard camouflage since 2010~2013 for Army, Navy and Air-Force)

물결무늬 / "해병 픽셀" - WAVEPAT / "ROKMC digital tigerstripe" (standard for ROK Marines sine 2010~2013)

"특전 사막 픽셀" / ROKPAT desert (since 2013/earlier: used by Army Special Warfare Command in the UAE, famous for appearing in the cancer K-drama Descendants of the Sun)

"유디티 픽셀" - ROKNPAT (since 2014/earlier: used by Navy Special Warfare Flotilla, ergo "UDT/SEALs")

Multicam (Navy Special Warfare Flotilla, Air-Force Combat Control Team)

Multicam Tropic (some Air-Force EOD teams)

Kryptek Highlander and Kryptek Typhoon (combat shirts and combat pants used by Army 707th Special Missions Battalion)
>>
