Only once. My dear border collie named Jen just could not go on and I had to put her down a year back. I had her since I was 4 and she was peppy all the way up to 21 years old. She ended up with cancer and heart failure, making her quality of life take a nosedive.

When the vet told me there was nothing that could be done, I took her to her favorite clearing innawoods, played with her as much as she could, fed her a bleeding rare steak, and held her until it started getting dark.

I think she knew what was next, because she was never a fan of guns, but didn't back off when I drew my pistol. I put her down there with one 9mm to the base of her skull and buried her there while crying like a bitch. It's something that fucks you up.

I kept her only daughter from her last litter named Tapper, who is 4-ish now, and I think she knew what happened when I didn't come back with her mother. I've still got Tapper and I love her, but you never forget your first dog.
