I guess this thing is a WW1 era colt 1911 built around 1918 and was eventually converted to a National Match Colt. How many people would be upset if I modified this thing further to have a more contemporary look?

What the fuck is 'more contemporary'?

Are you some kind of mouthbreathing retard who wants to change the grips, or are we going to something more drastic?

Most likely, anything you want to do is a waste of time and money and will make you appear to be a fool to everyone, and deep down, yourself, as well as an affront to the original weapon and tasteful mods.

grip safety, hammer, trigger, possibly new match barrel with compensator. Most modifications will require filing and actual work more than unscrewing a couple grip screws and saying "we oper8er now."

I mainly want people to look at it and say: "wow, OP really is a fag."

I have 0 intention on selling this thing. Now if someone came at me with a 9000 dollar or more price point i'd reconsider, but that's not happening. Realistically, I'd be lucky to snag a grand or two for it if my objective was to make a buck or two.

The current value of this one is probably somewhere slightly above or below a grand. The previous owner had done a shitty punch stippling job on the front strap and the frame was rusted to shit. I'm lucky it still fires. I was able to fix an issue with cycling due to maladjusted sear spring and i sanded and polished the frame to it's current state. In any case, this thing has been through hell and I can't imagine anyone picking it up for that much. Also, as I said before, i'm not trying to make money off of it.

>>
>>33649329
Next time you have to write that in the OP. You'll get a lot less grief if we already know it's been fucked with. Agree with the skeleton trigger, and put on some different grips. not sure what you can do about the grip safety and hammer though.

I posted the grip safety and hammer that i ordered for it earlier. My only concern is that i may need to have them fitted to the frame. If all else fails and i screw up the new components I'll just reassemble in current condition and live with it. I was more or less gauging how poorly the /k/ milsurp purists would react.
>>
>>33649555
I was a little offended that you'd do it until you talked about it already being disfigured. Just take it all apart and compare...file things down where needed and make it work
>>
>>33649658
It seems like a simple enough process. I was looking into bluing or blackening, but opinions and anecdotes are all over the map. Ultrablak-400 seems to do something incredible, but it requires steady high temps. Other processes seem to fade and wear poorly. A couple friends of mine have had issues with expedited rusting with blued revolvers in the past. Not sure where to go with that.
>>
>>33648890
I remember you. You don't know me, but I have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you don't modify that pistol, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.
>>
While it's an M1911 already that has been fucked with, you aren't going to make it shoot any better with those "contemporary looking" parts. It also probably won't shoot anywhere as good as an off the shelf commercially made M1911 made yesterday.

bad trigger job, and a nasty punch stippling job on the front strap would qualify as being "fucked with" in my book, but whatevs.
>>
>>33650128
I'm no 1911 expert, but those National Match 1911s were factory guns, weren't they?

This one appears to be a normal milspec 1911 that was turned into an imitation of a NM by some old-school bubba.
>>
>>33650128
I know what a National Match M1911 is. The trigger is not original. The fucking stippling isn't original and you removed all of the finish. I also don't think the rear sight is original either.
>>
>>33650041
I'm not really concerned with making it shoot "better", per say. I'm more concerned with making it more dependable while maintaining a clean aesthetic with a modern "twist." I was already able to fix an issue with the hammer following the slide during cycling by messing with sear spring tensions.
>>
>>33650206
OP here. I ground the stippling off and removed pitted rust. the finish is something that can be restored. The trigger and rear sight are modifications made by previous owner. The fucking trigger on this thing was like something off of an airsoft pistol. It is literally plastic with a set screwed surface area that i removed a couple of days ago while messing with internals. As far as I can tell, the slide and frame are not a matching pair, but are both extremely old.

You wouldn't happen to have any experience with any of EPI's metal finishing products, would you?
>>
>>33650069

But it won't be the original finish. You see the point? It's not a "piece of history" anymore, it's a "piece of history that someone fucked with." No collector or anyone with brains and money wants the latter.

>>
>>33648890

It says "United States Property" right on the gun. How about you return it to Uncle Sam instead of being a thief? You communist.
>>
>>33650288
You don't get it. I'm not trying to restore this thing. I'm not trying to sell it or appraise it's value. I've already done enough research to know that I wouldn't get much if I changed my mind someday. The "modifications" I made to the gun were improvements and restorations to the previous owner's molestation of this thing. For all you and i know, the finish this thing had when I received it may not have been the original either. The gun was close to worthless in the condition I received it in and nothing I do to it could possibly lessen it's value outside of dropping it into a foundry. It will continue to be a "piece of history" so long as the slide and frame remain some semblance of their original form. All original components will be stored somewhere safe in the event that I decide to return this thing to the shit state i received it in.

I was thinking of removing both sights altogether and replacing them with a vortex red dot at some point though. That would require grinding or un-swetting the front site off though... :/ so many options.
>>
>>33650288
Not OP, but I'm pretty sure he was agreeing with you, he said earlier in the thread that its value was already ruined by the PO's mods.

Personally I'd avoid tacticooling this gun and either restore it to WW1 style or to how it would've been when first converted into a match gun.

Just dont our 1911 is 101 years old now just preserve it and shoot the fuck out of it.
Im waiting for the frame to crack on it THEN ill do awful things with the parts kit....its comforting to know the barrel is almost shot out but the frame is fine considering how low pressure .45acp is.

>>
>>33650570

'NM' prefix on the serial means <50% of the gun was made in Brazil and then assembled in the US, with the "Geneseo, IL" rollmark on the frame. Conversely "N" prefix serials means >50% was made and/or assembled in Brazil. Currently all SA 1911s, in one form or another, are at least forged in Brazil. While IMBEL has good quality control over their machining it's a bit disheartening to see a historic gun manufacturer from America outsource their 1911s.
>>
>>33649164
You should of said that from the get go.
>>

>>
I wouldn't risk shooting a USGI 1911. while yes, it's been refinished, A lot of guys had their war trophies brought home and chromed/nickle plated. That is part of the history of it now and it would be a shame to undo it when you can get a cheap, fucking around 1911 that won't crack and turn into a paper weight for $300 now
>>
>>33648890

I once had a gun like that. Very old 1911 that someone had nickle plated and put pimp grips on. Otherwise it was unaltered though and I wondered something similar. At what point had this thing been fucked forever? Did I have any obligation to do no more harm or was that nickle plating the end and all bets were off at that point?

I eventually did nothing at all with it and traded it away. Moved on to a newer entry level gun to fuck up on my own.
