I'm still on the fence whether I should spend money on an AR or an AK.

It seems to me that dirt is less likely to get in an AR due to it's tight tolerances, but if it does, will it be as easy to shake out like in an AK?

I like the AK for its indestructible rugged simplicity; but to me its loose tolerances may easily cause problems in mud. But it seems that dunking it in water and shaking it out will fix it easily; compared to the more complex AR, which demands more time, care, and oil put into it when it gets dirty.

Also: What's the AK-12 going to be like? Loose or tight tolerances?

ak
>>
>>33648321
why not both?

ARs are getting cheap as the market is overstocked thanks to Hillary Election panic.

AKs are getting expensive due to russian sanctions, surplus parts drying up, and european made rifles going to wars in ukraine, syria, etc instead of the USA.
>>
Instead of fantasy scenarios, think what you are actually going to use gun for. Both will hold up just fine under your bed plus much more. I love me an ak but it is an ar market atm. Buy quality shit and take care of it regardless of what you choose

I'm not a burger. My country isn't too affected by import laws. I'm a filthy filipino manlet.

An AK is faster and easier to unjam than an AR when things get dirty, but it looks like an AK can get dirt in it easily.

Plus, when it comes to permanent structural damage, the AR wins due to modular replacable parts. You have to replace the entire gun with an AK.

>>33648405
Home defence is most likely. But I'd like to play with something that could get me through a Sarajevo, Haiti Earthquake, or Hurricane Katrina. Low-mid term SHTF. Nothing apocalyptic.
>>
>>33648321
I don't have any experience with an AK, but I do with the AR platform. Modern quality AR's are not nearly as unreliable as what some try to make them out to be,they can get really dirty and still function properly
>>
Buy both, but get an AK first. I just have more fun shooting my AK for some reason.
>>
>>33648495
Tight tolerances are fucking elegant. The bolt carrier group just simply squeegees out the mud.

But I'm worried that if mud somehow gets in, it will take a cleaning kit to restore her to working condition again. That means extra stuff to put in the bag.
>>
>not joining the ar-18 club
lmao he bought into the 2 party system
>>
>>33648565
There's also the Ak-12 club that's soon to open

I'm just looking into which pattern of family is better to get.

This. I got an AK and it made me want to experience other semi-auto rifles and learn how they work. AR was the next step.

Is it a good idea to buy both rifles, but chamber both of them in the same cartridge for simplicity and standardization's sake when SHTF?

>all pistols are 9mm
>all rifles are 5.45x39 or 7.62x51
>all shotguns are 12 gauge
>>
ARs are so easy to clean out if they get dirty. Abundance of parts and ammunition. Easy to work on. Now I've heard that *new* AKs should be avoided if they are less the $800 or so if you want anything that's going to last past a few thousand rounds.
>>
>>33649563

Who gives a fuck. It is quite unlikely that you will be engaging in a prolonged firefight. If you are, then you are already losing. If you somehow find yourself in an organization large enough to be able to be in a prolonged firefight, your guns will not be the only factor in the situation or the group will be standardized already.
>>
>>33649911
It's mostly for convenience's sake. Maybe you lose half of your ammo closet under a rubble pile, and none of surviving ammo fit in the gun you're currently holding.
>>
>>33648321
>doesn't know what tolerance means
>muh indestructable ak!!
killing yourself would be the best course of action
p.s. you're never going to get an ak-12 in any country.

The AR platform is much more versatile. On a single AR lower you can shoot anything from .22lr to .50bmg with an almost infinite combination of stock, barrel, and optics mods. An AK will always just be an AK. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's something to consider.
