What is the difference between a missile and a rocket?
>>
Missiles are guided, rockets are not.
>>
A missile is guided faggot.
>>
>>
>>33646773
>>33646774

wrong. ICBMs are rockets but are guided.
>>

>Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile
>Missile
>>
>>33646847

That's the name, but missiles tend to be short range whereas rockets have long range. ICMBs have worldwide reach so they aren't missiles.

I thought an ICBM was a missile propelled vast distances by a rocket.

>Missiles are short range

Holy fuck my sides.

Dude, I work with Precision Guided Munitions FOR A LIVING.

The fucking Air-to-Airs we shoot at other planes alone have ranges up FOR MILES.

The fucking JASSM is air-to-ground and can go for over 20 miles before hitting a target.

Range has fuck-all to do with whether something is a rocket or a missile.

Being guided versus non-guided is the ONLY difference.

>>33646891
Sort of. All missiles have rocket motors but not all rockets are missiles.
>>
>>33646761
Missile is anything that is thrown in air.
Rocket refers to a method of propulsion.
>>
>>33646918
Oh, thanks. I only remembered that rockets were involved in getting the missile into orbit or something, so I thought and ICBM included both a missile and a rocket.

>>33646923
I didn't anticipate the question asking for a fully semantic argument but you're still right.
>>
>>33646941
Missiles and rockets both have rocket thrusters. Missiles, in addition have in-flight guidance and course correction. Rockets do not.
>>
>>33646761
Missiles are supposed to explode. Rockets are not supposed to explode
>>
lets see if I can get this one, ready? THE ROCKET IS THE MOTOR AN/OR THE PROJECTILE PROPELLED BY THE MOTOR, A MISSILE IS A PROJECTILE. AN AIM-120C IS AN ACTIVE RADAR GUIDED MISSILE PROPELLED BY A ROCKET MOTOR. Hopefully this clears it up.
>>
>>33646761
Missile most broadly means anything that is launched, but in military parlance usually only refers to guided munitions with some form of propulsion. Many missiles are technically rockets (meaning they use a rocket engine for propulsion), but in military parlance, rocket more narrowly refers to unguided rockets such as the Hydra 70 or Grad.

>rocket is unguided
Fuck me, boys, i guess we just hit the moon with that /rocket/ by pure aim, skill and dumb luck
gee wiz, kids

A rocket is a rocket
A missile is a rocket with a warhead

Fucking retards i swear to god
>>
>>33646761
A rocket takes you on an adventure, a missile takes people you don't like on a permanent adventure.

In modern language, a missile is a self-propelled precision-guided munition system, as opposed to an unguided self-propelled munition, referred to as a rocket (although these too can also be guided). Missiles have four system components: targeting or missile guidance, flight system, engine, and warhead. Missiles come in types adapted for different purposes: surface-to-surface and air-to-surface missiles (ballistic, cruise, anti-ship, anti-tank, etc.), surface-to-air missiles (and anti-ballistic), air-to-air missiles, and anti-satellite weapons. All known existing missiles are designed to be propelled during powered flight by chemical reactions inside a rocket engine, jet engine, or other type of engine.[citation needed] Non-self-propelled airborne explosive devices are generally referred to as shells and usually have a shorter range than missiles.

In ordinary British-English usage predating guided weapons, a missile is "any thrown object", such as objects thrown at players by rowdy spectators at a sporting event.[1]

A rocket is a self-propelled, unguided weapon system powered by a rocket motor. Rockets are used primarily as medium and long-range artillery systems, although historically they have also seen considerable use as air-to-surface, some use as air-to-air weapons, and even a few examples of surface-to-air devices. Examples of modern surface-to-surface rocket systems include the BM-27 Uragan and M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System.

In military parlance, a rocket differs from a missile primarily by lacking an active guidance system; early missiles were known as "guided rockets" or "guided missiles". Some rockets were developed as unguided systems and later upgraded to guided versions, like the GMLRS, and these generally retain the term "rocket" instead of becoming missiles.[1] Rockets or missiles that travel underwater, like the VA-111 Shkval, are known as torpedoes no matter what their propulsion system is.

But the Saturn V rocket wasn't guided directly from Earth therefore it wasn't a missile. It was mostly pure aim from those who design it and skill from those on board with a tad of dumb luck.
>>
>>33650772
Saturn V did not have Vernier thrusters, in which could change it's baring mid flight.

A missile is any thrown or projected object - e.g. throwing an apple makes it a 'missile'.
A rocket is anything propelled by ejecting a stream of material behind it to push it forward

A guided missile is a missile that is usually propelled by a rocket.

>A hittile is a missile that hits its target instead of missing...
>>
>>33646957
spacecraft also have guidance systems but are not considered missiles.

the distinction is that missiles are weaponized projectiles and rockets are propulsion systems that may or may not be on a missile.

>Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles are not missiles.

>>33646761
A missile is a rocket with an warhead on the tip. That's a important reason for which space exploration was so heavily funded during cold war.
>>
>>33650503
Warhead AND guidance. For military purposes, the "warhead" part is assumed.
>>
>>33646761
A missile is generally a weaponized projectile.

Rockets are vehicles or projectiles propelled by a rocket engine.
