In the states, dogs are property unless they are people so it really depends on the circumstance.
If your dog is hurting someone else or their property on neutral ground or on their property they have every right to defend themselves or their property accordingly and vice versa.

I worry about this because I am ex mil but that is something that would send me over the edge.

I'd kill them and not in a clean way and I would not be able to stop myself an if they killed my dog I'd keep going until I killed every one of their friend and family. My dog is my family and my best friend. Legally would not matter to me I would not b able to carry on living without talking revenge.
