Just curious, let's say I'm a 35 year old athlete. Accomplished 3 gun & IPSC shooter, black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and an executive managing 300 employees.

Purely hypothetical- If I wanted to radically change my life and enlist, is that possible? Would my management/shooting/hand to hand fighting expertise get me anywhere? Does a civilian resume matter?

Don't take this one too seriously, but I'm genuinely curious.

Too old to enlist. You're at the limit on age. Hypothetically, you're an old fuck
>>
>>33641785
Thanks. Let's say I was 27 with the same resume- would it help me at all?
>>
>>33641778
Cut off was recently moved to 34.

If you have a 4 year degree, you enlist as an e4, if not maybe an e3. You could try to enlist as an officer candidate.
>>
yes and no. It isn't going to help you come in at a higher rank or anything like that, but it could potentially help you if you go in as an officer. Granted, since you're 35, you may be too old to come in commissioned. Most services cut off at 32 for initial entry as an officer. In reality, a good resume is still only going to help you if the right people get a hold of it an are aware of your accomplishments. If you absolutely hate your life, go in active duty and choose a job that you think you may love and go from there. If you just want to serve but keep your way of life, go in to the National Guard as enlisted and enjoy not having any responsibility and have fun. You'd be surprised how common it is for guys in similar positions to join the Guard just to be in a position where they don't have any responsibility and just want to serve. Almost every National Guard unit has that one enlisted guy who joined at like 30 and makes a 6 figure income, has a graduate degree and just wants to have fun shooting shit.

No one will care until you finish your IET. Once that is done, you will have to prove that you can be moderately successful as a cog before you get looked at to be an NCO.

If you are serious about this, make certain that no one in basic, recruit or DS, knows anything about your civilian life. Keep that stuff under wraps until you hit your unit, and be cagey there. Don't go trying to impress people with that, it will blow up on you.

Yes, it's possible. I'm pretty sure the US Army cutoff age is 38 or something like that.
Yes, provided you did the mandatory Army shit, you'd be pretty well off to become a Sergeant in a couple of years due to the management skills. The fighting expertise wouldnt mean much unless you enlisted in a combat arms MOS.
No, civilian resume does not matter.

Source- Current Active duty soldier
My advice to you is to stay where you're at. You're better off as you are. Managing 300+ people is the First Sergeant's deal, and that position takes 15 years of Army bullshit, minimum. You'll be treated like a child and a fool until you get promoted to Sergeant. And even then, you're still on the bottom of the leadership ladder, barring Corporal.

I stand corrected on the cutoff age. I never really paid attention to it, I just knew we've got a 37 year old Specialist in my platoon.

If the upper limit really is 34, you can get apply for a waiver to enlist. Talk to a recruiter, they'll give you an actual answer.

I can only speak for my experience in the Army. I can tell you your civilian expertise does not matter if you are enlisting, no matter which MOS/AFSC you choose. Your assignments will be determined by Human Resources Command (or your choice of duty station in your contract) and your pay will be similar to other junior enlisted. If you have a college degree, you may come in as a Specialist. I don't recommend it, but you have management experience so I don't think you would be unprepared. You would deprive yourself of the experience of being a Private, though.

If you are 27, you're fine. I turned 27 in Basic. Still old by Army standards, but you're probably going to get shit regardless. Go in during an off-cycle, you're the bottom of the fucking barrel. Go in during May-June, you're competing with high school kids.

If you are joining for the full military experience, go Marines. Army's a fine service, but if you're going to be treated like dogshit at least you'll be working with people who have high expectations of themselves. Half the Army, leadership and subordinates, seem to be malingering welfare queens.

I think your accomplishments and experience will set obstacles before you that you may not expect. It's hard (for me) to respect stupid, lazy, unprepared people simply because of their rank. This is mostly why I got out. Running from wasting more of my youth under bad leadership.

OP, I didn't even bother with your question, but that pic is awesome, thanks for my new background.
also, you are a cool guy, you will do fine doing whatever you are going to do, just go for it

Adding to this, I should say I was referring specifically to YOUR experience.

Native speakers of some foreign languages are worth bonus money and would do well as linguists. Down side: you are a linguist.

NB, and obviously: Nobody cares about Spanish/allied languares.
>>
You would have to be an idiot to enlist at such an age and experience. If anything you should be an officer. Better yet, go to school, get a degree and become a fucking police officer.
>>
>>33641778

Do not join the Army.

It is not a radical change in your life.

It is just like any other job.

We are not going to war at any point.

Rethink and re-evaluate what you are fucking saying.

Checked.

>t. person who left the Army, who spoke with a chaplain after a traumatic experience a few months before ETS. chappy confirmed army is a dehumanizing occupation and he would not let his children join.

I'm only saying you can join. Whether you should is for you to decide. I wouldn't want anyone I loved going through the process unless they had no other real choice. I think you're self-actualized enough to get through it unscathed and probably do some good, maybe, if you aren't an asshole.
