The 586 and 686 are pretty sweet. My only complaint with them is their size/weight. I would love a gun that had similar lines to the 3'' Model 13 that could actually hold up to regular magnum use. A revolver of those dimensions would basically be what the G19 is for autoloaders.

Yes the 686 wins by far. You can get them anywhere from 600 to 800, six round revolvers have the most after market parts.

Their trigger is a lot nicer than that of a Rugers, though the Ruger is more rugged and durable, the Smith is just as durable for practical purposes, and is a nicer shooter.

If we're talking about the best revolver EVER. I'd have to say a TRR8 or a 627, really hard to beat an 8 shot 357 mag revolver with a 5 inch barrel.

I'm aware the MR73 is extremely durable, if they made an 8 shot version of that. I'd pick that instead

Depends on what you want to do with it, although the answer is probably "yes". The 686 is a jack of all trades revolver. It carries OK (not as well as a J- or K-frame), you *can* hunt with it (but it's no .44 mag), you can probably win some bullseye competitions with it (but you'd be better of with a Model 14)
Still, it carries better than a 14, or a 6" or even 8"+ N-frame, and it's a better hunting gun than a 14 or J-frame, and you're definitely better off shooting bullseye matches with this than a Chief Special or a S&W 500. As said, jack of all trades, master of none. And in this role, it is hard to beat the 686.

As for lunch, I had a foccacia and a pineapple-coconut-lemon smoothie after a trip to the Hirschprung Collection, it was alright. Going to a place called Cocks & Cows for burgers and cocktails in about an hour for dinner.

Here's my 686-1, mom bought if for my dad as a father's day gift in the early 80s. I use it for the revolver division of USPSA, so I replaced the rear sight blade with a target blade, installed a Hogue release, bobbed the hammer, worked the DA pull down to 3#, and had the cylinder machined for moon clips.

The L-frames were introduced right as the P&R features were dropped from the S&W guns, which does in some people's mind make them less appealing than the older revolvers, but still, for the reasons mentioned in my previous post, they might be the best compromise, at least frame wise.
