With the old A2 style uppers where you had to mount optics this way, you either got a chin rest or used a riser. Taking some hardcase foam and wrapping it in 500mph tape was a pretty common DIY riser setup.

that was how things were mounted prior to around 2003 or 04. that or you used just normal iron sights.

Tbf, it's a lot easier to use a red dot on a carry handle than an ACOG since the ACOG has a picky eye relief.

Most dudes I knew who had to use A2s and ACOGs put cheek risers on the back of the stock (enough to clear the charging handle) to help.

If it was an A2, I'd get it, but the A4 is literally a flat-top, you can fucking remove the carry handle from the equation.

So, if I were in a situation where I'd have to quickly transition between longer-range shooting and CQB work, and off-set red dots weren't available (like being forced to use shitty A2 handguards or something). And again, we live in a world where offset red-dots exist. Like, unless you're super worried about EMPs killing your red dot...

And even then, with the ACOG, you *can* use BAC in a pinch.

I folded and went for a flat top rail 6.5 Grendel upper cause it was cheap. Next build if I never see an A2 upper receiver I'm gonna build a pistol AR. I just wanted to have an A2 20in barrel build for first AR.

If you're having to do an emergency pinch switch from long to close range shooting, it works fast and well. Not as good as a dedicated red dot, but faster with more accuracy than irons.

They didn't have folding BUIS yet, and optics weren't 100% trusted. So keep the tried and true irons while mounting the newfangled red dot forward.

Eventually somebody figured out that you could saw the carry handle down to just be a fixed sight and fit your red dot on it. And later than that companies finally started making folding BUIS.
