>On Thursday, the North's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Kim watched from an observation post as special forces dropped from light transport planes "like hail" and "mercilessly blew up enemy targets".

With a broad smile on his face, Kim praised his troops for their precision, saying "the bullets seemed to have their own eyes", KCNA said, without identifying when the operation was held.

The Rodong Sinmun -- the official mouthpiece of the ruling Workers' Party -- carried several photos from the contest including one of Kim watching the troops parachuting down from jets into an open field.

Another showed him grinning from ear-to-ear as he walked by cheering soldiers.

"The contest proved once again that our Korean People's Army... will show a real taste of gun shot and real taste of war to the reckless invaders," KCNA said.

North Korea is never, ever going to start a war on purpose.
They know they'll lose, the generals know they'll lose, most of them know they'd lose.

What's more no one else wants a war with them, just think of how much it'd cost to rebuild the infrastructure in NK, let alone house everyone and get rid of all the paintings if Kim.
>>
>>33629060
To be fair part of the reason they're starving is ideology (collectivization) but also because they were dependent on the Soviets for food, infrastructure, etc so when the Soviets stopped helping them in the 80's about a decade later they were fucked, combine that with all the sanctions and their unwillingness to open up to foreign markets (admittedly they were, up until this last bit, starting to).

>Cheollima Civil Defense (Hangul: 천리마 민방위; Hanja: 千里馬民防衛) is a name used by an underground group that surfaced to assist the family of Kim Jong-nam in the aftermath of his assassination. The group claims to receive "emergency humanitarian assistance" from the governments of the Netherlands, the People’s Republic of China, the United States of America and a fourth government to remain unnamed

So let's assume that the China is tired with Norsks bullshit and that Jin-Ping is cooperating with USA.

If China wants to keep Norsksland as a puppet state than they need new government. Kim Dzong Nam was a candidate but he was assassinated.

China absolutely doesn't want North Korea gone. Currently North Korea provides the service of having several million fanatic America hating Koreans between the US's current foothold in Asia and them. The current problem is that North Korea is trying to go from a land barrier/buffer state against invasion to an antagonistic actor that could entice the US into invading with China having no say in the matter. If the US starts looking serious about invading they will likely force a regime change to someone who is less nuke happy and unlikely to piss off the US.

>South Korea is fucken fertile fields
...really ?

I got the impression that the whole peninsula was full of mountains and hills.

Even so, SK is still having a net import of about 5 billions $USD of foodstuff / year.
Because their economy is large (1400 billions $USD), that's a very small expense for them.

But for NK, 5 billions would be like 20% of their whole economy.

The problem of NK is that it tries to stay in full autarcy so that it can be free from any foreign influence.
While not a bad thing in itself, it means they have to diversify so much that they are wasting a lot of ressources to produce stuff locally.

Meanwhile, SK just specialized and got really good at a few key sectors, selling quality stuff to other countries and using the profits to buy for cheap what they cannot produce efficiently at home.

The inflated military budget isn't helping NK either :
All the man-hours and foreign cash it spends in military hardware and defense infrastructure isn't spent on its civilian production infrastructure... which in the end limit how much it can do with what man-hours it has.

To give a small idea of scale :

At 36 billions $USD, SK's defense budget is currently bigger than NK's whole economy (25 billions $USD.

It is only 2-3% of SK's whole economy.
If SK doubled its military budget, the population would barely feel it... and it would give them enough cash to buy around 4000 brand new K2 tanks every year... which is nearly as many tanks as the whole NK's army has been struggling stockpiled over the last 50 years.

The only reason SK isn't just invading NK is because the north isn't WORTH conquering and makes a convenient boogyman
>>
>>33631935
Probably. In the event of war, the South is gong to put their all into defending their border.
They don't care about occupying the North nor do they want the North Koreans fleeing into the South.
Thousands, if not millions, of unfed, untrained, uneducated peasants. It's going to be up to the US, China, and UN to try to keep the shit show from spilling over.

In its great generosity, the People's Republic of China will gladly accept to relief its poor korean brothers.

Assimilating the whole population of north korea as peasants would increase China's rural population by only 4%.
If they were to spread that thinly across the whole of China, the north korean would just disappear in one or two generations.

So how likely is this scenario:

> Kim continues going crazy and executing high ranking officials left and right, perhaps at random as he goes senile in old age
> Several generals enter into a conspiracy to overthrow Kim before he comes for them
> Massive military schism as civil war breaks out between rebels and loyalists
> US, South Korea and the rest of the world just sit back and raugh
> Kim eventually gets BTFO, new military rulers of DPRK try to establish tentative peace with the West and "De-Kiminize" like the Soviet Union post-Stalin / post-wall

Only thing I can't figure is what the Chinese would do in this scenario

Oh yeah. The only thing the North Koreans seem to be good at is artillery barrages.
They have some pretty neat domestically built SPGs, but even those will get killed by counter-battery fire early into a war.
Their tanks are at best equivalent to a T-72M and their best aircraft are a few MiG-29s.

They have no chance. They know that but they've gotten into a dangerous balancing act where they like to make threats. Sooner or later they will fall off their tight rope, either into complete collapse or into war.

No, it was never that radar cannot detect them, it was that old style non-doppler radars pick up a lot of clutter that it overwhelms the system. So you point it up above the horizon to cut out ground clutter, which left low-flying exploits. Pulse-doppler corrects this, except you still have to filter out slow moving clutter mathematically - birds, precipitation, foliage, clouds, even wind.

This was exploited by the croats, who flew An-2 low-altitude missions at low airspeeds within the rejection speed setting on the AA radar grids.
Remember that the An-2 basically can fly at whatever the prevalent wind speed is as it has a ridiculously amazing stall speed, so, since you know that the enemy radar will be set to filter out certain speeds, especially around the prevalent windspeed with some room to spare, you just makes sure you reduce speed as you approach and glide in at the same speed the wind is blowing.

This worked fine for the croats until the serbs just started using the optical tracking and tv-guided missiles on the SA-6 to blast the cute little [big] gliding AN-2s out of the sky.

This strategy would not work against South Korea, the US, or China, without a ridiculously good ECM attack.
Granted,a nuclear EMP attack could give an opening, but that's about it.

An-2 does have some more uses in ferrying troops/supplies around the mountainous country, though. Do not expect to see it used offensively unless much worse shit is going down, though.

>I wonder how much of their soldiers and population actually believes what they are told about having superior troops/weapons.
From what I understood most Best Koreans know their propaganda is 100% full of shit. But it's not like there's another source of news. I'm sure some Best koreans can listen to Worse korean news from radio.

But when their lines of soldiers get mowed down it might, it might start to collapse their army.
>>
Shelling Seoul is often seen as NK's most likely opening move but that wouldn't do much after the first few barrages. Civilians would evacuate before the firing started and the North's artillery would be knocked out by CB fire and air attack from the US and SK.

I expect a hypothetical war to open up with NK nuking the DMZ. Destroy all the mines, fencing, tank traps, and startle (any surviving) defenders- and then being a rush through into the South with armor.
Even if troop movements are noticed in advance, you cannot do anything to stop them without looking like the aggressor. You will know war is coming but all you're left with is hope your initial loses are low, or pull back and already concede that land.
It will be a quick and violent attack but it will be beaten back once it becomes clear the North has no hopes of controlling the skies. As well as once American and SK armor counterattacks.

>>
>>33634255
You forgot the nukes.

Okay, just curious-we know the norks have tried to dig tunnels under the border and been caught-could they hypothetically be digging another one right now, with the intent of making it long enough for them to emerge in Seoul? Or even to dig a more narrow tunnel with the sole intent of placing a nuclear weapon under the city? Ideally you want a nuke to go off in the air, but I suppose they could always blow the top of the tunnel off, quickly collapse the tunnel behind the bomb, and then heft it a few hundred feet in the air with a short rocket pulse and then detonate the nuke?
>>
>>33634296
>Digging a tunnel from border to capital to place a nuke
That's some video game strats right there
>>
No one has ever claimed that North Korea had a powerful military

But the fact is, they have a gun pointed right at Seoul's head, and anytime they want, they can make the next 60 seconds the deadliest 60 seconds in world history. Please don't take them lightly.
>>
>>33634339
Oh man, that reminds me-nuclear artillery is totally thing, could the norks hypothetically create a few hundred nuclear shells and turn the shelling of Seoul from "deadly" to "oh shit nigger nothing more complex that bacteria can live here for 60 years"?
>>
>>33634296
I don't think you realize the difference between digging a 1.6km tunnel under the border as a fast-transit for troops under obstacles and the 46km additional distance needed to extend the tunnel to Seoul.

I mean, we've done tunnels that long with metro line infrastructure, but doing that secretly would be damn impressive.
>>
>>33634511
I'm not sure if they've made a nuke small enough to fit on a long-range missile. Which is what they've been spending so much time and money on. They've probably had no inclination to think about putting one in a artillery shell. Even a big artillery warhead.
>>
>>33634589
Note I said "could they". I agree with everything you said. Honestly I doubt they're THAT ballsy, imagine if they got caught half-way through that. That would be ugly and a huge potential waste of manpower.

I do think nuclear artillery would be a smart thing to pursue. It's buildable with 60 year old technology and they already have extensive heavy artillery batteries with enough range to hit Seoul. The might have even gotten some tips in doing it from the Chinese or russians. In fact...maybe the rocket program is a distraction. Shooting down a few rockets is easy, but a whizzing horde of nuclear artillery shells? Impossible. If they already have nuclear artillery, then Seoul isn't going to get badly damaged in a nork attack, it's doomed.

>>33634694
But that's just it-making nukes that small is common knowledge to the russians and the chinese, well to their nuclear weapons programs. The norks might be able to advance their program substantially if they gained insider access to those nuclear state secrets. And we all know how corrupt a lot of the russians are, and that the norks do engage in intelligence ops outside of their country. If they gained that ability, or even already have it but have kept it a secret, then the whole balance of power between NK and SK will be, or is, radically different than we expect. I sure as fuck hope they do not have that capability, because that could be veeeeeeeeery bad. We have al ot of people in SK and it could get ugly fast.

>With China's help some kind of nuclear weapons deal might be in the works
China is officially done with their shit. They cut their coal contracting with NK (their biggest source of trade) and are now getting it from the US.

After the Trump-ings going on these past two weeks and Kimmy egging over the Big Red Button, China is staying as far the fuck away from NK as possible.

If war breaks out, China would more likely join us or stay neutral than attempt to help NK.

US's immediate threats are more sanctions. Which won't do anything.

Trump's kind of on a roll the past few weeks so he may order something with the military. Maybe bombing the testing site or the production/storage facility for rockets. China's not sticking up for NK right now so if you want push come to shove now would be the time.

The troops look shoddy

1)Bunched up, hey may be doing a larpy demo but if that is their drill they are dead
2)Firing from the hip?
3)Bluing on weapons nearly down to bare steel, could be from over cleaning but even so
4)Some have gloves some none why?
5)No plates/carriers
6)Gold plated binos? Really?
7)No optics

They are dead, that is even ignoring the bright white chutes and obsolete planes.

Assume larpy suicide corps

>>
>>33628994
If Guadalcanal were the size of a country is the situation I suspect.

Think of it like this, if the reports are true that they have operated detention caps for 50 years, then there are tens of thousands of former guards that will fight to the death rather than face execution for crimes against humanity.

If it is not true, then we have been the victims of propaganda and they are actually fanatical fighters.

They will never get that close.

The ROKs are touch fuckers and have perhaps the best infantry squad drills I have ever seen.

For the marines it would be gulf war one all over again, advancing across burnt shit the air force has vaporised already

>tens of thousands of former guards that will fight to the death rather than face execution for crimes against humanity

You think a north Korean concentration camp guard has a concept of crimes against humanity or the possibility of being punished for following Kims orders?
>>
Scenario

Kim pops of nukes and fires missiles at japan.

A test missile hits Japan

The west retaliates with air strikes aka cruise

Kim dows not know the rules and war breaks out shells SK.

SK and USA go in over border.

NK military collapses Iraqi style

Massive NK civilian and military casualties

Chinese PLA enters war, slaughters any NK in their way or directes them to suicidal attacks

PLA and USA come into contact and to avoid nuclear war call a cease fire.

No Norks left. China occupies NK and does Tibet 2
