I've got $190 right now. What should my first rifle be? Willing to save up some if need be.

10/22. It's fun affordable, and good for learning fundamentals. If you've shot some before, saving up for an M&P Sport II is a good option.

If you want some cheap fun, a Marlin 60 or a Ruger 10/22 are good picks. I've never had either of them fail on me, and 22lr can be had for as low as 5 cents per round.
>>33627773
what would you say is better?
I've heard the 10/22 line a lot. Wouldn't mind it, but I'm not expecting to have enough free cash in the next year or so for something with more power than a 22 and that's what I'm thinking about right now.
>>33627804
I'd argue both are more or less identical, but they come with their own perks:
Marlin 60
>micro-groove barrel supposedly offers more accuracy
>never lose a mag because it's tube fed
10/22
>MASSIVE after-market for things like specialty stocks, triggers, etc
>magazine fed, so you don't need to sit there reloading a tube every time if you have multiple magazines
Marlin 60 is around $150 brand new, and a 10/22 is around $190-$200. I'd personally recommend the Marlin 60 if you just want a very simple rifle that won't fail on you. The 10/22 really shines in the ability to upgrade it and pimp it out, but if you're a purist that just wants to stay 100% stock (save for maybe putting a scope on it), the Marlin 60 will do just fine.

Thanks, pal. Might go with the Marlin then. Just for the sake of simplicity. Plus I won't have the tinkerer in me wanting to go spend money I don't have for 10/22 stuff.
>>33627748
Don't listen to this guy, op. Get a 10/22. It's fun affordable, and good for learning fundamentals. If you've shot some before, saving up for an M&P Sport II is a good option.

The Marlin is built like shit. Get a 10/22. Put it in your ass...Then put it in a Magpul Hunter stock.
>>33627733
My first rifle was a SKS. $200-$300 and ammo is still 35 cents a round.
My first gun was a single barrel 12 guage. Pawn shop for about $100 with shells. Fun and made a big boom
>>33629087
I've fired those before. Call me a bitch all you want, I don't feel like having my shoulder constantly bruised. Also, I like having range. Home defense is one thing, but I want something that I can use if I have to bug out.
>>33627897
if you're a tinkerer keep in mind that the marlin 60 is a total pain in the ass to completely disassemble. also note that it's also called glenfield 60 so if you find one of those it's the same gun..

FUCK NO. Get a 10/22. It's fun affordable, and good for learning fundamentals. If you've shot some before, saving up for an M&P Sport II is a good option.
If you dont want a 22 you could get a shotgun. Savage makes one that retails at dicks sporting good for 199. You can have quite alot of fun w a shotgun
Savage Mk II
>22, so cheap and low recoil/report
>bolt action so you actually take your time to aim and it's comfy and not picky about ammo
>very well built and accurate for the price
>can be had for ~$160-$220
If you want more customization or faster follow-up shots get a 10/22. But honestly the only thing that would slow your cash hemhorrage more than a bolt action .22lr would be a small-bore muzzleloader or air gun.

That girl didn't exist when kar98s were $200.
>>33628894
Where do you live, Canada? Nobody sells SKSs anymore under ~$350, unless they're "gunsmith specials". Most go for $400-500, at which point you might as well get an AR.
>>33628894
>2017
>$300 SKS
Where? In canada?
So I'm in western Washington, which has plenty of innawoods space, but few open spaces in public land that are safe to shoot. The ranges nearby all have the same shitty policy of "one round in the gun at all times, unless you're shooting doubles like a fucking fudd".
I have a shotgun for blowing shit up in the woods, because I know there aren't many clearings longer than 50 yards in most of the NF land. Surpisingly all the clearcut in the area is private land. Should I even bother getting a rifle for my next purchase if there aren't any places within a reasonable drive to use them?
It just feels weird having all this "nature" nearby, but it's either full of organic granola hikers or soccer moms or confusing private land allotments in the middle of the woods. The rest of it is fucking steep mountains so the average distance between you and your backstop is like 20 yards.

Forget this moron advice. Get a 10/22. It's fun, affordable, and good for learning fundamentals. If you've shot some before, saving up for an H&K Mark 23 is a good option.

Here OP. A little outdated but still accurate.
>>33631124
>SKS $450
That's actually about right. I don't feel so bad now knowing that even 2 years ago when I couldn't get gunz SKSs were severely overpriced.

At your budget, a mosin would still be one of the more solid choices out there as far as firearms go.
But it's definitely not the "deal" it used to be now that they've shot up in price, and ammo is no longer ~20c/r. Corrosive cleaning in a mosin is still almost as easy as spraying remoil in the chamber and muzzle ends of the barrel, then bore snaking. But now that commercial is almost the same price, I'd probably stick with that.
On a side note. If I was starting over again and was wanting a 22lr, I'd probably go with a cz452/455 trainer with tangent sights. I like my 10/22 and sr22, but I'd want a gun with a little class to it and very nice irons.
Personally, when it comes to very cheap plinking for someone with less money, I'd recommend a 22cal pellet rifle before a 22lr. Mine's rated for 1000fps with non-lead pellets, closer to 900 with regular ones. It still hits fairly hard.
>able to be shot almost anywhere
>fairly quiet if you have a silenced model like mine(wear plugs indoors because it's still loud-ish)
>not a major danger if your pellet goes where it's not intended so less risky to hunt birds in trees etc
>borderline free to shoot after initial investment
>great practice with irons if you invest in cheap spinner targets like pic related
