Worst decision ever. the french are worthless in large air exercises. They turn up to learn without revealing their tactics, they use the most basic settings on their radar and go out of their way to grab all the ESM data they can on their allies.

More interesting exercise wise is Frisian Flag that just finished in Europe, RAF Tornados as red force managed some surprise victories against F16, typhoon and mirage aircraft from France, Germany, Netherlands and the USA.

They don't do publicised opposing reports anymore. Every air force involved got sick to fucking death of it in the early 2000's when it kept happening and dealing with the fallouts of bullshit that the media and "enthusiasts" would spew out over things they didn't understand.

That and no-one wants to hear Dassault go into another one of their cringeworthy modes again.

Generally, if Typhoons are involved they tend to work with the F-22 and F-35, as they'll be directly serving with one of them, and often allied with the other. RAF is more about learning to operate with than against due to them moving into 5th gen pretty much within a year now.

One way or the other, four of NATO's best jets exercising together is fucking cool.

If you followed trilateral exercice 2015 you'd know nothing relevant filtered on the french part except for blurred out gun cams lasting a few seconds. Which proves nothing. Means nothing. And certainly is more useful as a joke than anything else, since it's pretty obvious Typhie and Raptor jockeys may have gotten some good shots too. This happened during the first day.

It's not even banter at this point but rather hypocrisy.

On a morning of 1995 Mirage 2000 D pilots operating over Bosnia from Italy had the good surprise to find their ATLIS II targetting pods completely dissassembled next to their planes after they were "guarded" at night by US air force security forces who had conveniently disappeared. "Someone" may have wanted to look into it, but was unable to reassemble it after. Oopsie.

Not that is was a new thing, this kind of stuff happened all the time during the cold war, especially in its early phases. Once, the french got in trouble for dissassembling an F-84 of the USAFE for example. And the americans did the same to a Mystère IV.

Both the Rafale, F-22, Typhoon, and F-35 above all, come with a library regarding everything that's flying around they have to feed with informations for their combat system and sensors, to know what they're looking at. Therefore they are always doing EW on everything and everyone.

The chinese wrote a little something a few years ago about a J-11 chasing a Rafale conveying to some air show in Asia which was flying a bit too close next to some chinese ADIZ. Some mockery of a dogfight later, the Rafale headed back towards its destination. You can bet your ass this manoeuver was for gathering electronic intel.

Another example : the USAF never displayed the F-22 in France for over a decade. For a reason. Until one day they did, in April 2016, when a B-52 and 4 F-22s of the 94th Fighter Squadron flew low over the Lafayette squadron memorial, for the centenary of its creation. Pic related.

There is a time for mistrust and a time when it doesn't matter anymore. That's the game. And it's been played even between manufacturers from the same country. Being a partner and an ally doesn't mean not being prepared. It means keeping your common ennemies close, and your friends even closer.
