Hey boyos, I need some advice on a job specific .22.

I run a trap line in northern minnesota, and I need an pretty light .22 rifle (Not the shitty ar7) as I'm carrying 60+ pounds of traps, tools, and supplies at all times, not counting my l00t.

I have a shitload of .22 (pic somewhat related), and am hoping to put a can on it if HPA passes so threadable would be sick.

Restrictions are compact, lightweight, magazine fed, and sub 300$

I appreciate any help :*

Also, .22 thread

Get a drag sled for your gear. That's what I do when I longline. A .22 magnum revolver will handle dispatch for anything just fine and you can just stick it in your belt. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but that's what you need.

I would recommend the remington 597 in its non hbar format. Its like 200 bucks 10 round mags are small cheap and plentifuk and optics are easy. I may also recommend a marlin.22 but I can't remember the name. The markin has nicer magazines that are more flat and can be stacked in a pocket easyer. the price is sub $200 so you vould buy a sling and some extra magazines.

Why would you come here if you already knew the answer?

And why does it need to be a .22? Why not just get a glock 17 or something with a large mag size.

Or hell even a pistol caliber carbine.

I hunt ptarmigan/grouse and I feel like buying the trappers pizza when I run into them. Wolves seem to be jacking everything this year.
>>
>>33622089
Ah, I see.
Will you be 21 by the fall season next year? Unless you are catching wolves and wolverines in legholds, I say just use an axe handle or catchpole until your birthday, and use the budget to get a revolver. I've used the back of an axe for everything I ever caught, up to and including Eastern yotes. You can easily choke your fur out with a catchpole you make yourself.
>>
>>33622089
you absolutely can, tho. I have 4 handguns and I'm 20. I bought them from 3rd parties. You just cant get them from an ffl. do it before they pass some shit like the did here in oregon

>>

>>33622908
It's a big deal that a young man is out trapping in this day and age. I guess I just instinctively jump down the throat of any one I might percieve to be an anti trapper. You think protecting gun rights is tough, try protecting the "privlege" to trap fur from urbanite yuppies, women, and jewish eggheaded state biologists. And don't forget all of the "hunters" who always start with "I'm a deer hunter, but..."
>>
>>33622932
This. If you have any older male relatives who are in-state, and might be willing to gift you a pistol, hit them up. I didn't have anybody and couldn't buy one once I turned 21 because I was in Maryland, so I understand the struggle.
>>
>>33623019

>>33622928
Sounds like a plan.
I'll look into a good revolver for the purpose and do it the old fashioned way until then.
Thanks gentlemen!
>>
>>33622995
I think that anon was saying a larger round wouldn't damage pelts any more, which is true to an extent.
>>
>>33623059
Another plus for the handgun is, getting in and out of vehicles with it is a non issue. If you drive between your sets, it is a total bitch to be taking a long gun out and then putting it back in 6 times in one morning.
Good luck out their anon!
>>
>>33623071
.22 caliber has been the standard for years. The fur buyers will notice the larger hole and give that pelt a lower grade. You may think it sounds crazy, but those guys are that good. They are looking for any reason to devalue the pelts, any deviation from normal processing will ding you money. They want it all standardized.
>>
>>33621618
Not mag fed, but my little badger is like 3 pounds.

Hell, sometimes I use a 45 colt and it's very workable. It doesn't explode the pelt, you sound like a liberal saying assault rifles explode deer if you hunt with them

>very light

It's not the MOST reliable but it isn't shit either.
>>
>>33623187
H&R .22's are pretty good but you'd have to get one used; they're cheap as hell, too

Hi Standard used to make good .22 revolvers, as well
>>
>>33626551
>>33626564

I said absolutely nothing about pelt damage, so nice strawman. But if I sound like a liberal, you sound like one of those fags that go into lever/bolt gun threads and tell everyone to just get an AR
>>
>>33626665
Nope, not an AR guy so nice try. So what the fuck is your point? All you really need is a damn axe handle and knock it out and stand on n its chest so it can't regain its breath, boom. An unharmed pelt.
>>
>>33626499
It's not just about damage, I have plenty of non-.22 options if that was the case. Cheap ammo, carrying capacity, weight, and availability to someone under 21 as well as noise are all considerations.
>>
>>33626811
Sometimes up here we get things a little feisty if they're not body trapped, you'd be surprised how often coyotes and wolves manage to fuck their ways into canine-proof sets.
>>
Does anybody still make a pump action .22?
>>
Marlin Papoose 100%. Super light, breaks down, and is magazine fed.
>>
>>33626814
>cheap ammo
Not an issue unless you're homeless, throwing the pelts away (you know you get paid for them, right) or using snowflake ammo.
>>33626827
Yes, I use the club in pic related now because when I first started, long story short a coyote I shot 2 times with my mossman 500 12g lunged at my face and I just barely had time to put my right hand infront of its face (had impact gloves on) and it still bore through them.
All you need to do is when they're in the trap you hold the end of your club above their head so they look at the club, then very swiftly and steadily you smack it on the head. One good swing if you're a man and it'll go stiff. Then proceed to stand on its chest so it cannot regain its breath.
>>
>>33626900
I also bring a Henry .17hmr. Don't recommend .22lr unless you are completely confident. But I also use the Henry as my truck gun.
>>
>>33626900
I'm an ultra jew, so every cent matters, but I do appreciate the advice with the club.
The ubiquitous nature of the .22 is why I want it, it won't be solely relegated to trapping/hunting.
>>
>>33626996
If you don't need to shoot it, don't. After they are looking at the receiving end of the club and get a whack. Give me another one. Then stand on them. Get something (talking both gun and club) because in my story, I used a 2x4 and could not swing one handed at it because I was being chewed on by the yote. Carry a .22 handgun and a cold steel shorty, which is the best club for the task. And dirt cheap and won't break
>>
>>33621618

>>
>>33630919
Yeah it's kinda in my area, why?
>>
>>33630934
I thought i spied one there, but it's a cool place to go, sometimes they have neat pistols.
>>
>>33630912

Not if you're out in the bush. Why would you even consider anything with less than 30 cm of barrel?
>>
>>33626499
I hit everything with the butt of my axe and drown it. The few I shot, I used a .22 to the head and then gave them a blow to the throat with an axe handle. I've choked out a couple song dogs and a bobcat with my catchpole. Never any need to sew them up unless I put a hole in it fleshing (I only did that once on an early season kit beaver).
>>

>>
>>33623339
oh shit, they finally made one in .22?! Nobody said anything wtf
>>
>>33631586
It's almost the same price if I recall correctly, but of a waste of 500 if you ask me.
>>
>>33626834
Stevens, Rossi, Anschutz (good luck getting it anywhere outside Germany though), Chiappa, and I think one of the repro companies makes repro 1890's (which are neat and very accurate but also incredibly heavy for a .22 due to the fat octagonal barrel).
>>
>>33626827
Muskrat trapper here.

Can confirm that dogproof traps aren't even all that particularly dog resistant and I routinely get stray farm dogs and coyotes in mine.

As far as dispatching trapped animals, I usually just smack them with my stake-driving mallet (a necessity to have for underwater traps) and have my CCW subcompact 9 for unexpected things.
>>
>>33631698
I'm seeing some for around the ~$450 mark, which seems a little steep, but to be fair, it's a bit of a niche market. It's a lot better priced that the Smith 317, anyway
>>
>>33631738
It's always nice to have a backup, and when I get permission to hunt on farm land I would prefer to cause little ruckus with a .22, canned if possible.

Never know when a coyote would rather leap and bite than look at the club.
>>
>>33631802
I'm probably springing for a used or sub 250 revolver.
>>
>>33631536
It's a shame, the concept is perfect for the kind of forest game hunting I do. I go after grouse and squirrel in steep valleys and draws. Having the ability to switch between a .22 and a shotgun would be awesome.
>>
>>33631738
I am so afraid of somebody's dog getting into one of my 330 bucket sets that I stopped making them altogether.
>>
>>33632438
just put em in places no sane dog or otherwise would go in, or small enough entry a dog couldn't fit.
Its a shame to give up a working set.
>>
>>33632420
One of those russian o/u shotgun/rifle combos would do, but those cost an arm and a leg.
>>
>>33632784
I think I'll just buy lids and dremel a hole through them that a large breed dog can't get its shoulders through. It would be such an awful way for some normie on a hike's dog to go. >>33632784
>>
>>33633029
