Out to 300 metres, you should've fine with irons or a dot. Past that, a 1-6x will serve you well, at least on a fighting rifle.

Nice thing about magnification is that it does make shooting a hell of a lot easier.
I learned to use the irons on top of the ACOG. They're acceptable for hitting mansized targets under 50 yards.
Ultimately, I decided not to be a poorfag and save up for a SpecterDR. Best of both worlds.

0-300 a red dot is fine for range and self defense, non military.
Its not fucking arma 3 or afghantistan where you'll be constantly shooting at people 300-700 yards away.

Red dots for 100 yards and under. Yeah they can be used past that but in my opinion a 3x or 4x scope would be a lot more versatile than a red dot in most cases like that and a lot more fun. except if your main concern is home defense then go with a red dot.
