What is anon's opinion on the best cheap deer/boar round? Not looking for .22's. Coworkers are touting the 7.62×39 above .30-06 because of the how cheap 7.62×39 is.
Thoughts?

7.62x39 works as well as .30-30, or so I've heard.
Fudds around here either use .243 or .30-06, I prefer .243 personally.

I've never owned a rifle before, only shotguns. Looking to get in some better practice before trying my hand at rifle hunting. Seems the 7.62×39 is the cheapest round 'round, but I don't want to practice up on something that will end up being pointless.
>>33617674
6,5x55 swede best round
7.62x39 is the ticket. Cheapest thing out there that is big enough for the job.
I've never hunted boar but I hunt a lot of deer. Why do you need a cheap deer round? You're only going to use 1, maybe 2 if you're a fuckup. .308 would be the way to go for deer
>>33617777
Those digits back up your statement
6,5x55 is best
>>33617674
I've used .30-30, .30-06, and 7.62x39 for deer and hogs successfully. All good hunting rounds.
>>33617674
How is .308 for bringing down deer?
>>33617777
6.5x55 best.
.50 BMG
>>33617888
It works great. That's what I use. I've shot deer with my Tikka, Fal and my M1A.
Are there any rifles with stocks that have shock absorbers in them? I need help managing the recoil.
>>33617888
Forgot to add I usually use Nosler Trophy Grade 165 gr. AccuBond for hunting. Just my personal preference
>>33617888
perfect, anything else is a bit too much gun
>>33617674
7.62x39 soft points are only marginally less expensive as soft points in nearly any other caliber. youd do better with .308, .30-06, or any of the ~6mm calibers. the max range and bullet paths are much better and its not like youre going to need a ton of hunting ammo.
>>33617888
Ive shot deer, elk, boar, bear, antelope, rabbits and prarie dogs with .308 I wouldn't recommend for the rabbits or prairie dogs.
>>33617674
That spam can nugget food are cheaper than some 7.62*39
Never hunted deer before (too much bullshit to deal with), but I do shoot hogs because they're not regulated. 7.62*54 would smash their gut real good
>>33618125
spam can 54r is now more expensive than actual hunting ammo, and far less humane.
>>33618149
>made to kill human
>not humane
Nigga what?
>>33618179
FMJ is not considered humane for hunting. how could anyone who has ever hunted anything not know this?
>>33617674
Likely something in the .30-.45 cal range. 7.62x39 is a lot like 30-30 in terms of ballistics, but 30-30 has a greater available selection of hunting-oriented rounds. .308/7.62x51 and it's older brother the 30-06 probably have the greatest selection of rounds available, as much to do with effectiveness as demand from fudds. .308 with the right ammo can take all North American game, however it's a marginal grizzly round.
>>33618125
In 2011, sure. Surplus x54r has all but dried up in the CONUS and the little remaining is at or above parity with new manufacture commercial ammo. It's also FMJ, which makes generally poor hunting ammo.
>>33618179
Just because you're killing something doesn't mean you want it to suffer needlessly.
>>33618179
In some states fmj is illegal to hunt with because it may just pass through not doing enough damage to kill the animal cleanly and quickly.
likewise you can't use soft or hollow point in war because it may do to much bodily damage to the extremities expanding wounds and tearing flesh which was deemed inhumane according to the
1899 Hague Convention
>>33617674
7.62x39 is basically an SMG caliber.
if you aren't going to take pot shots at deer/pigs at 300m+ then you're good.

I use a 50cal muzzleloader. I've seen bullets expand to near 100cal extremely quickly.
So far, every deer I've shot has dropped on the spot without taking another step.
How big a deer and how far away? Assuming white tail less than 200 yards, .308 is great. 30-30 to about 150 yards. .270 beyond 200 yards. 30-06 is more than you need. It will just beat you up with the recoil. .243 is popular also to about 175 yards. It depends on what range you will be shooting at.
>>33617674
.243
>>33617674
Depends on where and what you're shooting.
Closest thing to a good all around round would probably be .270.
