Which barrel length is preferred for an AR-15: a pinned 14.5" barrel or 16" barrel? Seems like a lot of people recommend 14.5 for compactness but I've heard of reliability issues with midlength and intermediate length gas systems (14.5" KAC SR-15 related).
Which would be better for an all-purpose AR?

Pinning is for poorfags too poor to SBR or too stupid to brace.
>>33613445
>SBR'ing a 14.5" rifle
>using a pistol brace on a 14.5" rifle

And they come running.

16" is the best all-around build. Pinned 14.5 is such a huge waste for such little benefit.
>>33613405
16" mid length
14.5" carbine
Intermediate gas system should be dead, there is nothing wrong with using rifle length on an 18" barrel.
>>33613405
Go 16" with mid length gas or go full SBR.

So, completely irregardless of legal issues, is 16" really the best "compromise" barrel length?

Just weld a small bead on the bottom of your muzzle device, file it a bit, paint it and claim you had it P&W. Who'd ever test it?

>>33613405
What scope is that?
16 is just better unless you're willing to go maximum autist, enjoy your carbine length gas system.
That said, 20 is master race.

16 exists cause of legal issues
14.5 exists cause they wanted to keep the bayonets and grenade launcher capability
if they just wanted a short gun it would be 10.5 or 11.5 cause thats what carbine was designed around

What kind of velocity would one get out of a 10 inch barrel though? Would that be effective for the 300 yard standard distance of engagement?
>>33614719
Yes, it would be effective within 300 yards.
The impact of barrel length on lethality within typical engage distances is blown out of proportion.
>>33614719
you get good enough velocity out of 10, if you look at 5.56 short guns from around the world they end up being 10-11

K, just asking, because I live in Canada, so I don't need to worry about SBR or anything like that. So then if the ballistics out of a 10 inch barrel are adequate then the convenience of that size is worth it, given that ARs here are all classified restricted regardless of length.
The value bump in 5.56 performance vs. barrel length comes down at 10-11 inches.
Otherwise 16" is the less problematic option.
